26:13, regarding the coffee, Swedes usually likes really strong coffee. I remember when my father was deployed in the US, they had to import Swedish coffee because they thought American coffee was weak.

American coffee is horrendous. Don’t know how people can drink their coffee. Well I do; they put tonnes of sugar, creamers and milk in it to hide the taste of coffee. There actually documentaries on why American coffee is so bad.
@skalgrimfellaxe57963 ай бұрын
This is true. While on vacation with family members on an American cruise ship a few years ago we suffered the loss off strong coffee until we found a solution to make a semblance of what we are used to (Swedes drink the second most coffee in the world after the Finns.) our solution was to order two double espresso, pour those into a big coffee mug, then add one packet of insta coffee, mix and that was ok to drink.

I think "bitter/dark" is a better term for it. Unless I remember wrong coffee for the Swedish market is roasted unusually dark, which will be perceived as "strong" or bitter unless you're used to it. Not sure why, and might be bullshit. Who knows!

Might not be in the MRE but to this day there is a Tradition in Sweden to Eat split yellow pea soup with fläsk with pancakes and mustard on Thursdays. Something the military in Sweden has done from the early 1900- hundreds.

@jereviikari1092 ай бұрын
Both in Sweden and Finland, pea soup began to be eaten no later than the 13th century due to the influence of the Catholic Church, as Thursdays required a hearty meal in preparation for Friday's fasting. In Sweden, pea soup is made typically from yellow peas, while in Finland, it is made from green peas.

Regarding the coffee we (Swedes) like ours coffee really strong. When the spoon can stand straight up by itself in the mug, then it’s strong enough, as we say. Abroad we usually have one coffee pot for the swedes and another for the locals.

On a home guard training exercise a few years ago, the highest ranking specialist rank officer of the Swedish home guard visited my unit, it was a cold, rainy October day at around 1130, and the man hadn't even had a cup of morning coffe... When told we didn't have any ready made coffee, he asked for a pair of those 24h pack coffee powder tubes, got two and he just ripped the top off both, poured them into his mouth and rinsed them down with a single folding cup of cold field canteen water...😅 The Swedish armed forces really run on three non-combat consumables: instant coffee, pea soup with pork, and, last but most critical: snus. Never put yourself between a Swedish soldier and his next resupply of snus... it will end badly for you, and you might not even get a warning...

You made a misstake with the peanutbutter. It kind of separates when in storage so you should massage and shake it before opening it to get it mixed back up then they are fantastic! And you are right the Rice Pudding is a breakfast and it is brilliant when it is -30C outside. The crunch in the rice if you had it is a mistake but that is a mistake most make when cooking it as it is the most difficult one to get right in the Blå Band offering.

It's NOT calories, it's kilocalories. In USA they mark it Cal but it's actually Kcal. USA does everything wrong, thats why people don't know how much anything is. And people in USA think they use the imperial sustem but dosn't. For example a gallon of liquid give you 3.785 litre but a imperial gallon is 4.546 litre. Just use litre and you mix your food right and can understand that 1 calorie has energy to warm 1 gram of water 1 degree Celcius.
@sietuuba3 ай бұрын
Yes. Both consumers and manufacturers being lazy and dropping the critically important prefix of "kilo" makes them be off by three orders of magnitude (a thousand times too much, or one thousandths the intended amount of energy). Using the proper SI unit of joules (J) for energy might work if people were to learn it, but 2000 kcal being 8.37 MJ (megajoules) or 8374 kJ (kilojoules) it's more likely to lead to once again people refusing to learn anything new and also dropping the prefixes of mega or kilo, and leading to even more confusion... (While on the topic, I must note that it's small k, not capital K - that would not be any established prefix; instead it'd be "Kelvin", the unit for temperature in the SI system. Water freezes at 273.15 Kelvin or zero degrees Celsius; furthermore these two units are the same size which makes conversions between scientific notation and everyday observations a breeze.)

This is the dry-ration pack. It contains roughly 4800-7000 kcal depending on the menue and if it´s ranger-adapted. They are primarely used during the winter months because the "wet-rations" are frozen solid during those times of the year. Dry rations contain more kcal than the wet ones because the winter climate is much more demanding and requires more kcal not only because of the work you do but overall. Shivering from the cold is you´re body trying to create muscle spazms to create chemical reactions and kcal burning in your body even when you´re not walking or running around. Thus why you need more kcal even when standing still. You also need to hydrate more since you need to pee more often in cold weather due to the blood gathering around the inner organs and passing through the kidneys more than in warm weather when the blood is more or less equally distributed in the body. The philosophy behind the rations are *Fast carbs and sugers in the morning to get that caloric burner going on your body. THis is to increase the body tempeture first thing in the morning. *Lunch and dinner are more slow carbs and some protein. Generally you need to supplement protein with various powders. These meals are made to put in a steady flow of energy throughout the day. Bars, berrys and nuts are there to provide backup energy for longer rucks and skiing-marches. Winter warfare 101 is to always make sure you have hot water in a thermos at all times. This means every swedish soldier will, during winter times, always boil water when there´s time. THis is to ensure you can "heat up" the body from within with warm food and drinks even when you´re not able to move around all too much (recon units). All in all the dry rations are way tastier than the wet ones. The wet ones taste narly and contain A LOT of oil and other cheap tricks to fill up the caloric requirements. The wet rations comes with chemical heating bags. They work "decent" only.
