We have a Mal X. He's 6 months old. Smart dog but definitely crazy, just like you said. My best advice to anyone considering this cross is to do lots of research. They are not built for people with sedentary lifestyles. The dog is extremely active and needs constant training and attention.

I have DDR Shepard and I wish people would research these breeds. I work my dog everyday, lots and lots of socializing, training and tons of exercise. He is amazing but definitely will chew if bored. Same with the beligan malino. People are too quick to follow a trend then these beautiful dogs end up with serious issues or in shelters.

My Mal is a rescue, got him from a shelter when he was almost one. Great boy loyal and loving to a fault with immediate family. Still working on socializing him slow process but making progress. Think he was left outside alone by previous owner. Love the tennis ball off the cliff example as it is 100% true!! We just moved to the country there's a shallow ditch that drains into a pond, where it terminates just before the pond there is about a 7 ft drop off straight down I threw the ball and it took a bad hop right at that drop off I seen Joey and then he just disappeared full speed never slowed down! Ran over to this hole only to find him covered in mud with the ball in his mouth... Had no choice but to tell him good boy!! He also climbed himself out of this hole no problem!

I absolutely love that analogy - a Malinois is like an Energizer Bunny with no off switch. Act first, think later. We just had to put down our 15 YO German Shephard 2-3 months ago and I just loved that dog and how smart she was. I'd see her have an issue and just stop, take a step back and look, and think the problem through before taking action. For example, when she was young, she dropped a ball and went to grab it and ended up pushing it under a piece of furniture. She tried to grab it and just pushed the ball even further back. She backed up, looked, laid down and put the side of her head down for a better view, then moved to another vantage point and did the same, then laid down and reached under the furniture a couple of times with her paw to work the ball back out.

Straight and to the point. Also, there are certain working (mainly sport) GSD lines that are more Malinois-like, with endless energy and lack of an off-switch. Crossing with one of them might not result in a mellower end result.

Exactly. The Dutch breed like this. They will outcross Malinois and that shepherd with some working line German Shepherd, Great Dane, American Pitbull Terrier, Mastiff, even border collie and then breed back. So really most of that Malinois we are seeing are X Malinois. They can even get papers if need be FCI recognition and eventually AKC. Whenever I see a large 80 lb + Malinois with a much wider nicer head than normal, I know that they come from Dutch lines or some Eastern European lines and they have been out crossed
@joansmit5782

@@primalcrittersbullshit. I have been involved with all the related Belgian Shepherd “breeds” for decades and with the related AKC recognized breed clubs and with the top breeders in the USA. My husband is a Dutch National who had a Laekenois as a child and we have contacts within the Dutch breeder programs for both the Tervuren and the Malinois. What I know about the AKC, DKC, FCI and with modern DNA testing, and how hard it is to breed to a foreign stud or bitch and import with intention to register, it is not possible to slip a cross-bred dog in. Did YOU know that, the four coats (Malinois, Laekenois, Groenendaal and the Tervuren) are considered ONE breed in the EU, but the AKC separates them out into FOUR separate “breeds?” Did YOU know that because of that, to this day, you can get Malinois, Laekenois and Groenendaal coat characteristics in an AKC “purebred” litter of Tervuren…and that the AKC will REFUSE to register them? I also translated the paperwork of a Malinois cross that the police imported from the Netherlands. The papers were NOT official, just from the breeding program and the police knew that. Programs that do that are NOT recognized by the kennel clubs. Without direct documentation it is impossible to “breed back” and be registered. The ONLY case that was ever accepted by the FCI was with the case of the Dutch Shepherd which breeding lines were decimated by WWII and they allowed TWO (2) matings with Tervurens in order to expand the gene pool. And, the “broader head” is NOT nice, it will be considered a fault by the AKC, DKC and FCI.

My Malinois herds sheep (she brings them back in the stable at night), and stays with the sheep all day. No extra exercise needed, except some retrieving, tugging, little stuff like that (just games to feel satisfied and build trust). She's always outside so she's hungry in the evening and wants to rest. She sleeps in my home, is not agressive to my friends but does not trust strangers. The dog does not bark very often, except when there's somebody at the door. She's 7 now and STARTS to calm down. PS When my Mal was 4 mths all, he jumped on and over a table to fetch a ball,... this is correct in the video: they don't care, they don't care about hurting themselves or anything.

This brings memories of my beloved GSD. He always sleep outside and his mission was protecting home and oh my god what would happen when a random damn cat decided to enter in the backyard. No one in 1 Km radius would sleep that night. Once a cat manages to climb a tree before he catch him, he started to do 3 meters jumps trying to catch him and barking like crazy at 3am....we had to to active search & destroy protocol to be able to sleep that night hunting down the bloody cat.

No doubt, mine stares in my eyes, reads my mind and then does exactly as I want, no joke, no exaggeration. I am 63 years old and have rescued/owned/fostered [most were temporary homes until we could find their forever homes] over 60 dogs and this is, by far, the most wonderful breed and I sure wish I had known of it long ago! I actually recently brought 2 baby mini pigs, weighing only 2 pounds each, into the household with no problems, although I did introduce them carefully and slowly, taking a week to do so. Now, they all snuggle together. It is the cutest thing in the world. But to a person who doesn't know better and just adds the piggies into the household without proper time and intro, most Mals would eat them......they are a dog for a certain person who will take the time and learn enough to manage this breed well, and be prepared to change your life to do so. Mine looks to me for all direction and instruction and never have I known such obedience. He lives to please me, there is no other purpose in his life and he is ALWAYS happy. He has zero issues or problems, other than as a puppy [he is almost 3 now] he chewed up some things, normal puppy behavior, and a tennis ball only lasts 2 minutes, so we have to buy the heavy duty balls.....I also got mine at 6 weeks and ONE DAY after having him, he came down with parvo symptoms, so he already had parvo and the wonderful vets saved his life [to the tune of thousands of dollars], but even with that horrible start in life, he became the greatest dog ever. Small visiting children can take meat and bones out of his mouth. Of course, they shouldn't, but the point is, he would never harm them. But when a stranger comes around, watch out. Ninja blocks him, won't allow him to the house, and I have to say it's OK, then Ninja accepts him and will even lick his hand.

I rescued a "shepherd mix" pup from a local rescue about a year and 1/2 ago. We did Embark and found that he is 30% BM, 25% GSD, 14% Black lab, 14% Retriever type dog and the rest mutt. He has a GORGEOUS black coat and an intimidating bark. He's a mush, but his energy level is INSANE. I had a trainer coming and he said right off the bat this dog was mostly BM and he was correct! Thank goodness I work from home and only have to be out for a few hours at a time. I strongly agree with you that a BM is not for everyone. For someone like me, whose life revolves around keeping him busy and tired out, it's a different story.

Also, thank you for rescuing a dog, and working from home (NO breed of dog should be left alone all day) and taking care of your dog's needs. Curious though, why you need a trainer? I had a dog with no off switch. He was found at a lake shot and bleeding, weighing only 2 pds. By the time he was just a few months old we could see he had problems. He had a strong prey drive and food aggression. I paid for a trainer and it helped somewhat, but we had to put him in a crate if we left home to keep the other pets safe. I asked the vet numerous times about neutering him, but she said he was too young. Finally, I went to another vet and had it done. Totally different dog! He's received more training and since I'm in a wheelchair he's become my service dog. He has even saved the life of another dog by jumping and catching a hawk as it swooped down to grab it. He's become the heroic dog that you read about in the articles and at this moment he's laying on my feet. I couldn't live him more. Thor has the personality of a Malinois. He's very stubborn, but is smarter than most animals. You have to let him know that you are in charge, but give him positive affirmation too. This is no cuddly baby. The vets say he's probably a Great Dane, Mastiff, and Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, but he has the coloring and shape of a Malinois so I wouldn't be surprised if he had some of the breed in him. Don't get a dog like this if you can't put the time in or you work and no one's home with him. Trust me.

I have a male Malinois(father)-Red Nose Pit(mother)mix! He is going to be 2 in August. He is such an AMAZING animal. We had a hard start because he is so very much different than any other dog I've ever had and I was having a very hard time understanding what I was doing wrong. I am not a trained dog owner but I have a way with all animals I can't explain it but its awesome. Jasper is 70+ pounds of pure muscle and is such a natural guardian. The Drive in him is unreal and he wears me out but he is exactly what I needed in my life. I love him so very, very much. I am way too overprotective of him and I have to work on his social skills some but we live out in the country and don't venture out too often so he is lacking a little socially. He is a genius, I have no other way to put it but he is a GENIUS. Fast, so Fast, the fastest dog I have ever seen in my life. I run him to exercise him with r.c. cars, one of which can hit 60+mph, he doesn't like it because he can't catch it but the others (30ish mph) he can walk off and leave them. I didn't know that dogs could be so Human like with their emotions and actions. Separation Anxiety is off the charts so he is with me 99% of our time! I mean showers, toilet, cooking, cleaning even push mowing my yard he is with me every step of the way. He is the sweetest, most gentle boy but don't be stupid and mess around me or my place; he will rip your throat out if I tell him. Thats not hyperbole!!!

You are so right , I have a military trained but failed the grade malinois called major and I have to constantly keep him in check , I'm a 5 foot 7 female, I'm well built muscle wise , Major is impeccably behaved because I keep him in check , he's seven and calming down. He has become a father , the mother is Mali x germ shep, I've already picked my pup out of the litter at six weeks , pick her up in a few weeks. Mum is very laid back ,not much bite or prey drive , where as Major has enough of both for anyone to deal with so little Lexxi is going to make a good working dog with endless training of course. Not a breed for the faint hearted or lazy , not a good first dog or family dog really. People need to experience a maligator for a week before deciding , the weak would not survive a day hahaha 😅. Great topic , I'm glad someone took the time to educate, thank you!

I had a female Belgian Malinois mix. Possibly a cross. She was around 55lbs most her adult life, her frame, build and coloring was definitely malinois with the exception of her face. She didn’t have much of a mask, a little around the snout and darker coloring on her ears and tail. Never figured out what she was mixed with. She was definitely a thinker, very agile and the leader of any dog pack she encountered or became a part of based off her speed and agility and never got mounted lol. She caught multiple squirrels, got bit by a copperhead, chased and almost caught a duck taking off, chased a white tail deer out of the woods, skunked multiple times and stole so many hearts in her almost 16 years. Whoever gave her up to the shelter when she was a puppy really missed out. RIP Lucky(Feb 2006 - Nov 2021)

Awesome explanation! I wanted to share how I ended up with a cross. GSD, we have had all my life working line. My mom decided she wanted a puppy again after years of an empty house. It had been three years since our last gsd passed away at 13 years. She thought she was getting a 4-month-old gsd. We found out later she was a Mal cross and CRAZY! I had to learn a new way to train which we did with professional help. I have had dogs do typical puppy stuff. My God Kaylee was super smart and extremely driven land shark. First true dominant dog i have ever had it was serious and could have gone so badly if not corrected. Every day training and working was intense with her. The e collar was the tool that did it. She was a dedicated friend up until she passed away in her golden years. Gsds and Mals are so different, and Kaylee taught me that. 😊

I found I dont only need to work on Salem, I need to work on me, I spoil Salem, she gets more toys & treats than some kids, I do not make her earn it, then i get frustrated when she doesnt stop jumping & licking everyone, she lives ppl too much, she gets manic & its hard to get her attention, also Salem doesnt want ur attention, she Demands it, & shes in ur face yelling if ur not giving her 100% attention. The pups were not planned. She was an absolute nutcase, but she calmed down around 1 year. Great information. Have you ever dealt with a Dutch Shepherd? We adopted ours when she was 4 months old thinking she was a lab mix. But our trainer and vet both seem to think she is a mix between a Dutch and a malinois. We plan on doing DNA test to see her mix. She was so high energy that we needed to train her for doing task work in becoming a service dog. She always needs a job and she is a fast learner. She will be 2 years this May. Her energy level hasn’t changed. How would you compare the Dutch Shepard breed to the malinois as far as energy level? And temperament? She can at times be protective and territorial. Yet when she is working she preforms perfectly every time.

Malanois and German Shepherds are herding dogs, the love and training you put on their development and high amount of work will impact how they grow, they're and will be active, but with a good training routine and proper socialization you can have either breed be very similar. They are highly intelligent, protective and loving companions. The ones who are aggressive it is due to their training, and improper socialization.

Very informative video, thanks for sharing. I have a Malinois-X, he's 9 1/2 months old (84lbs), relatively low drive and a very intelligent dog. I knew entering into this, it was going to be a huge commitment on my part to work with him and give him the training and stimulation he needs. I've completed a puppy training course and also completed a "2 week board and train session" in my area. He definitely has a good training foundation and it's up to me to continue to develop, keep the videos coming!

I ran a Malinois and my partner had a Malinois X both of them were great K9s. I 100% agree about them being too much for 99% of people. Mals and bloods hours are definitely my favorite dogs to work. We worked state prisons and the Malligators out worked the GSDs especially with the smaller sized for the more confined spaces when searching for narcotics.

I've got a rescue Malinois X, pretty sure his other part is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Still has a touch of the over impulsiveness, but highly intelligent, very aware, much more chilled, incredibly loyal, but gentle as a lamb with those he knows, but very wary of strangers, great guard dog, also physically bigger, 40 kilos but solid. Had him 3 and a half years now and he's the best dog I've ever had. 100% hooked and wouldn't hesitate to have another, BUT have plenty of land for exercise and training. Had issues when I first got him but with time and patience I now have a fantastic addition to my family. My one caveat, absolutely NOT a dog for the inexperienced dog owner, I've had dogs decades, he'd have run rings round someone inexperienced.

I adopted a Malinois/GSD from the animal shelter. I didn't have any clue what I was getting into, and I will admit that I lost my mind when she destroyed my home while I was at work, but I am committed to her. She had the beautiful black saddle from the GSD, but her attention/focus/determination/drive is 1,000% Malinois. She is so intelligent that it's scary, but it keeps me on my toes. Around the first of May, we will be starting our training with a teacher who is highly knowledgeable about what my dog is. I made a vow to her that I would not quit and I won't break it. But yes, you are correct that this dog is NOT for everyone.

My dog, Sam is mix-1/2 black Doberman/1/4 Malinois/1/4 GS. I bought her at 6 weeks of age and work with her constantly. She has the short Dobe tail docked, all black, with Malinois head and coat. I'm alone mostly and she is my extra ears, eyes and protection-very territorial. She has an attitude at times but we understand each other. I'd say she has the Malinois disposition. At times, if she doesn't get her way, I say she sasses me like a bratty teenager. I tell her not to talk to me that way, then she puts her head down and holds up her paw. She has always been made to take an afternoon nap; goes to bed at 9 pm. I don't even have to tell her. Sam is trained for chores around the house, inside and out. She loves to work and likes to keep busy. Sam is the best buddy I've ever had.

Very helpful video, especially because we adopted a Malinois-mix who was saved from a high-kill shelter when she was a year old. She's three years old now, and we think she is half-Shephard. She's all black with a small white patch on her chest, and looks very similar to your Mal-X example. I will be watching your videos more because we REALLY need assistance in training her as she's very untrusting of anyone she hasn't had substantial trust in, and is aggressive to strangers.

@dolcepescas6153 lol She helps pick up and gather the dirty laundry. Drags the baskets to the laundry room when they are full or I call for them. Then, when it's time to hang, fold what not, depending on if it's just a small load or if I filled the clean basket. Like towels, for example, once folded, she'll grab her bag and bring it behind me to the cabinets, or she'll carry them as a pile. That's just the laundry aspect. She also helps my son and I with yard work and my landlord and neighbors, too. She'll help rip off the branches when we are cutting trees or bushes, pile them, then help take em to the burn pile. After she's picked out the ones she'd like. Lol She helps dig out weeds, and recently, she helped dig out the stump of a tree we had cut down. She also helps with recycling. Sorting and putting them in the correct bags or cans. That's not all. She does so much more, helps clean around the house, picks up trash, and even helps bring in the grocery bags and other stuff. She is fun and loads of help. Most of it, she basically just started doing it on her own, but she learned by just watching me, and she would start grabbing and bringing it. If it was the wrong thing, she'd take it back and keep trying till she got it right. She even puts hers and her sisters toys away. Sorry, I love talking about her. I can go on for days. She's about to get her own baby chicks. She has baby fever, and sadly, I'm not up for a kitten rn my cats wouldn't be happy at all. They barely just started tolerating Angel. Lol. And we are waiting a few months to get my son another dog for a few reasons. He's been rather busy with ROTC and his work for it rn and getting ready to start sheriff's explorer again, and working to get his permit. Plus, it's going to be a boy this time.

I’m not a professional dog trainer, but in my 12 yrs experience with DDR/Czech GSD and Malinois that I owns. This is my experience in crossing the two breed. The pups will look more like the dad, so if you want the dads look you have to breed the dad to the opposite sex. Not saying it all will look more like the dad, but sometimes 25%-30% will look like the female. So if you like the males looks, your likely to get 75% puppies that looks like the dad. My personal preference, is dad GSD and mom is Malinois. I want the GSD built looks and the agility and speed of the Malinois. Having a dog that looks Malinois but lack the agility and speed of it is kinda funny to me. I prefer a GSD with the speed and agility.

'It's not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog. ' Mark Twain. IMO Some in LE are too worried about size, so that is the reason for sharing the quote. I worked for a company that sold/trained police/protection dogs and had contracts for narcotics and explosive detection dogs. When it came to the dogs sold to LE many of our imported dogs were GSD/Mal crosses or GSD/Dutch crosses. We had a few Mals or Dutchies however many were the crosses. Many police departments are happy with the crosses, they have more then enough drive and will bring the fight. Some departments in tougher areas like a Mal or Dutchie but the crosses seem to be just fine.

The energy drive was insane. He couldn’t hold still for 5 minutes. Also massive in size. Very clumsy though knocking stuff over. THE BEST GUARD DOG OF ALL TIME. Was not hesitant to protect. He would take down ANY game, by the time he was fully grown I wouldn’t be afraid if I ran into a mountain lion/Puma. Every Malinois that i have seen except one are tasmanian devils, just like he said. The one that was calm was from a line that was especially bred to be family dogs. Working line Malinois should be owned only for work purposes! Whoever says otherwise, doesn t know what he s talking about. Even professional trainers avoid them, because their intensity requires to much of their time ,the training costs becoming prohibitive for the owners. I know so many cases of ex Malinois owners(including my brother) who instantly regretted buying one. The tragedy is that you can t find a new owner for them.

Our Marley is a Malinois x German Shepherd and she's great in all of her tasks. We have a farm where she can run to her heart's content. She has had a significant amount of training. She's getting even more training. I'm a former combat sniper and have PTSD and went through 30+ concussions and now have an intractable migraine. It never goes away. Marley stays with me always when my migraine is at its worst. She's also looking out in case my PTSD goes off the rails. My wife was a zoologist in her first career and knows a serious amount about animal psychology, so she works with Marley when she comes home from training. I grew up with a German Shepherd that I got for Christmas when I was 6. That was a long time ago. That dog, Duchess, was my best friend and I a heartbroken when she crossed over. So, my wife tracked Marley down for me, both as a support animal and as a protective dog for our house. She's super smart and athletic. We love her!

I just got mine! Maloinies, more than other breed perhaps, because they are the smartest, WILL adjust to you and what you need and want. Working dog is the best title for them and for sure with an off and on switch. They are not a lot of work either. But because of their amazing lively energy, which will get transferred onto you, you will find yourself working more and better on everything in your life. In my case, I absolutely love that. You will have to be a step ahead at all times, which again will make you better. With a lot of love, they will be everything you want them to be and show you what a dog can be and do, to the highest degree. In my opinion it does not get any better than this, but you have to be ready to change your lifestyle and yourself - for the better! No other dog can do that! Not that quickly to the degree that a Malanois can. 🥰

I have a 3 yr 3 month 125lb male Sable Mal/GSD X . The over agressive Mal part controled the 1st 2 1/2 yrs but thankfully the super smart GSD has taken over now and he is now more mellow and controlable.

I’ve had and have Mal X GSD best farm dogs we’ve ever ever owned. Unbelievable loyalty.. we have a 13 year old male sleeps at the foot of my bed every night! He’s still dialed in💪🏻

Anubis the Malinois, lol, great name! I thought a first that Malinois-X was like, the XXL American Bully or something, some super-large version. Always learning new things here on your channel - thanks for the great work, Garret!

i love what you said in the first part explain that there not for everybody the amount of times iv'e been questioned about mine because they want one and they live in a unit its like the amount of times i have found mine on tables and book shevls its crazy and thats with weekly hiking and daily runs

Thank you for your comment, Mia! And thank you for educating people out there about the fact that they are not born as the perfectly obedient dogs people see on KZbin. Like you say, even with hikes and runs, "craziness" can happen, like, finding your dog on a table or book shelf...

I had a Malinois and Yellow lab mix. She was the best dog but even as a mix she was high energy and very destructive her first 2 years. On the upside I learned how to do drywall. She was super easy to train and she was excellent at guarding without even being trained to do that. The only other dog I've ever had that was almost as smart was a shepherd and elkhound mix. She was worth all the trouble for sure. My vet taught me how to raise her from 8 weeks old which is probably why she turned out so good.

Anything mixed with a Labrador is going to be high energy, nevermind throwing Malinois into the mix. I have a lab x border collie and she's high energy, but will chill out most of the time. She's just shy of 11 months old and is only destructive if I leave her loose whenever I leave the house. I also have an 11 week old Labrador and she's also going to be high energy for the rest of her life. She also already knows when it's time to chill out.
