@teadora993 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna be honest as a student studying nutrition and medical biology in college. Her exercise routine is great, she clearly has great muscle definition and is keeping her body fit. I'm sure for the most part she is healthy right now, however, that won't change the fact that she is underweight and has been since WYWF. She has better habits now than she did before, but the issue isn't in how she is now, it is about how being underweight will affect her in the future. I can guarantee she is not getting her periods and if she is they are irregular, if she were to ever get sick with the body she currently has it would take a massive toll on her body causing her to take a much longer time to recover than normal. Being underweight can affect fertility, brain function can create fatigue and anaemia (Depending on iron consumption) it is not something that people should be striving for. I genuinely hope she gets some mental health therapy because it's clear that the pressure from the public has given her the impression that being in her healthy weight range is not good and that she can only look good if underweight. The thing that sticks out the most to me is the fact that she posted her height and weight in that post knowing people would see how underweight she is, indicating that she doesn't see the fact that it isn't healthy in the long run. The fact is that she isn't just Korean she is also Canadian, her healthy weight and body range will never be that of a petite Korean woman which is what seems to be her goal, because it's simply not in her genes. Somi is only 20 so she's still very young, I just hope that as she matures she stops taking the public's opinion so personally and is able to just live an unbothered healthy life.

Also and more WORRYINGLY to say Somi doesn’t get her period is a HUGE assumption, one that I bet you are NOT qualified to opinionate ( even as a student). Not only that but you ALSO don’t have access to her diet, exercise routine and lifestyle to give a diagnosis on her healthy.

I can agree with you. I took health sciences as my science courses in university and we’re taught that a little bit of extra fat is necessary for protection of organs and other vital functions. It’s generally commonly understood that definition in the abs or having abs without flexing isn’t necessarily the proper indicator for health. I used to do a deprivation diet and I actually did have issues with anemia and loss of my period even though I was not nearly as thin. I’m also full East Asian. I’m apple shaped so not exactly that petite, though I’m obviously smaller than most westerners. Not all, but on average. It’s a statistically fair assumption, though it might raise an eyebrow or two depending on the person.

A lot of you requested this but I also wanted to remake the older video. After reading some comments there was a frequent critique that my last video was interpreted a bit mean or hostile towards Somi and that was not my intention. So I changed a bit of the wording that may have left negative feelings. I noticed a lot more comments tearing her down on that video as well and thought I needed to go deeper into the life Somi has lived up until now. Somi is not at fault for the things that happened to her. The people who criticized her in IOI or pre-debut or in YG were purely based off her looks and superficial reasons, and not because she did anything wrong. Somi has faced a lot of pain and hurt deeply ingrained in her since she was an elementary kid in school for being half white and looking different. Everyone keeps sending mixed messages about her body, she is just trying to cope with that. You can't fat shame her and then get mad when she loses the weight.

Thank you for making this video about Somi too Parents always forget that it's not idols' job to educate their children! Idols' job are to inspire, to sing and dance, and to be role model! Somi had proven to be a good role model as she had always stayed real with the public and spoken candidly, when she knows she's wrong, she genuinely introspected and owns up to it

While I don't think Somi's weight right now is healthy or sustainable, people need to stop blaming HER for it. Although she is more energetic and happier during this comeback I can’t help but think of the scientific definition of her weight being considered underweight for her height when she wasn’t born this way. I am happy that she is doing well but just worried for the long run but either way if she is exercising, eating well and staying mentality fit cross fingers she’ll be okay for the coming years
@dso20103 жыл бұрын
that scientific definition you’re talking about is body mass index (BMI). It’s not accurate to define whether or not someone is healthy, since according to it, most bodybuilders would be considered overweight or even obese. BMI does not take into account body composition.

I remember watching her vlogs she had so much pressure it was turning in nervousness back then. A thing I noticed is that when idols defend themselves and their eating a lot they can't win. It's better to just let people talk, because they'll always find something to pick apart so if you don't say anything they have nothing to base their "arguments" on. I'm always so sad when idols have to defend their every move to their fans. The fans aren't entitled to their lives, they get no say in what they eat, when they sleep, who they are friends with or who they date. They're not family, nor friends. They're fans. If they don't like an idol, fine. Don't. But don't hate. If they like an idol, fine. But don't feel entitled to anything in their lives.

The idol industry is so toxic. I never noticed her weight gain/loss but I have heard about her diets recently. (Though I did noticed how thin she was this most recent cb.) It’s so sad to see that she’s been struggling with this since she was so young. I hope she gets the help she needs and that more people around her try to help her as well. I’ve never had an ED but I have tried dieting multiple times before. I’ve tried cutting food out and just starving myself but it’s all ended poorly as I’m always hungry and after the “diet”, I would just gain even more weight. It’s really not healthy and I’ve learned that. I hope that she learns to ignore the people who talk about her weight. People who waste their time talking about other people’s weights and looks are the ones that are the most insecure and are always projecting themselves. It’s so sad.

It's pretty sad that in order to please the audience she had to lose weight dramatically, in order to feel good in her own skin. The media can be so cruel, and don't even get me started on netizens. I mean I get it that she's feeling good now, but I can't help but to think that this is sending a message of "you gotta be skinny to be happy" when the truth, is that it's not. She's a strong figure, gaining a crazy amount of popularity (cause she deserves it) but as she's so influential, she should send a message of love and acceptance instead of promoting unreachable beauty standards, by following them. It hurts even more cause she was never "fat" she looks like a regular teenager, in the perfect weight. I found this problem with many other idols and celebrities, and I just wanted to address it. While I do think she looks great and her exercise discipline is admirable, it’s hard not to think that her diet might be a little bit too restrictive still. A little bit of fat around the abdomen is perfectly normal and is actually there to protect your organs. Not having defined abs without flexing does not mean that you are fat or out of shape, that’s just what beauty culture tells people. There are legitimate health risks to being overly underweight including malnutrition, bone issues, immune function. I have issues with anemia at times and I can understand some concern (I’m not super thin, my BMI is at the lower end of normal) That said criticizing her or blaming or for being a bad influence aint it. People who would attack someone for their weight probably aren’t genuinely concerned. Instead just send her messages that she’s loved and appreciated unconditional to her weight.

Thank you for this comment. I was disappointed because this channel is usually pretty objective and good about identifying disordered behavior; but both the video and comments are seriously concerning. I think Somi is one of the most beautiful women in the industry, but she has a BMI of 16 (which we can verify, since she publicly posted it) and has started referring to her very normal-sized teenage self as "too big" and "chubby". Coupled with her history of starvation diets and unending pressure from every which way, it's shocking that people even try to assert this weight loss is healthy. Working out doesn't make someone healthy (excessive exercise is actually a component of both anorexia and orthorexia in many cases), and just because she's bubbly onstage and in interviews it doesn't mean her body is in good condition. And to everyone saying it's natural to be underweight, and not to skinny shame-it's not shaming to point out that being underweight carries a litany of health risks, many of which won't be seen for decades and by that point it is too late to undo the heart damage and osteoporosis. Also, there's a strong correlation with decreased immune function, so whether or not Somi has an eating disorder we can be 100% sure she is less healthy than she would be in a normal weight range which, for her height, starts at 122 pounds.

I know she said it was a come back to the haters but to someone scrolling through Instagram it’s just showing everyone how underweight she is. Her BMI is literally 15.5. Now I don’t care about the picture of her abs, I think she looked good. I’m not concerned about her weight at all. But her posting her weight is the problem.

And I’m unsure about how her telling the haters how much weigh my she lost (when they told her to lose weight) was a “comeback”. She just followed their demands and they very well may be more harsh on her (and others) in the future

I have those friends always posting photos of themselves in the gym and things like that because it makes them proud. Everyone has their thing, my friends are probably tired of me posting books and kpop all the time.
@katrina83153 жыл бұрын
@@bellota_miau kpop and books aren’t the same as the topic of weight and weight loss. Weight is always a sensitive topic no matter your status. Yeri of Red Velvet sometimes post pictures of herself exercising. But she doesn’t post anything about her weight. There is a line that shouldn’t be crossed.

She's half Asian, you know Asians have a different BMI, right? Just say you're jealous and go.
@katrina83153 жыл бұрын
@@denisse5280 Yes, I do know that POC have different body types. An easy google search from different websites that cater to an Asian body type shows that it could be from 15.5-16. Not much of a difference. 18-24 is considered healthy. Do what you want with that information.

I'm glad she's doing well, getting the attention she deserves after all Somi is very talented! I'm also happy to see that she looks good and super confident with herself, but I'm worried about her weight, I don't understand much about that but I saw a comment explaining that by her current height and weight she would be below the recommended average. Unfortunately, the media doesn't take it easy on the weight of female idols, which is terrible because having people all the time judging their weight affects self-esteem a lot. I really hope Somi maintains a healthy diet and routine, without having to resort to dangerous diets such as eating only three bananas a day.

As someone with an ED, she does sound like she has an ED, I hope she gets better, it really sucks having one, i hope she can find happiness within herself to stop caring about all of this one day💖🌼✨

Just because you have ED doesn't mean you magical powers to tell if someone else you do not even know personally has ED too.
@kalara52183 жыл бұрын
@@selinajohn1463 actually they are able to do that, although not everyone is the same, there are signs that someone with an ED would notice about someone else that a person without one wouldn't. And I can speak for myself as well, she does indeed seem like she has one. Also the OP never said she *has* one but that it sounds like she does.

@@kalara5218 how because she tried to diet wrong while in JYP at a young age and couldn't do it so she just stayed the same weight?
@kalara52183 жыл бұрын
@@michellekercy4430 she's not the same weight. Although to some it might not be an extreme extreme weight loss there is still difference in her weight. Also, although I might be wrong it seems you're insinuating that someone who stays the same weight can't have an ED (how people think anorexia is the only ED that exists) ED does not equal anorexia it can be may other types of EDs such as Binge eating disorder (BED), Bulimia nervosa (BN) , Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). There's a lot. Additionally, none of us are assuming she has one, we're just speculating she might just by the signs
@kalara52183 жыл бұрын
@@michellekercy4430 that's assuming she did the same as you. For someone who could have binged at night time doesn't mean you'd stay the same nor gain or lose weight. Depending on her genetics and her lifestyle, binging may do nothing to her body from the outside (as in not changing in weight) but she also might be binging but exercising vigorously to maintain said weight. None of us know anything and no one is saying a solid fact, so stop accusing others of spewing false information because you too know nothing. We get snippets of clips and we apparently know everything? No.

posting her weight was not the move considering her struggles and openness about basically starving herself with diets,,,,, when i see ppl like hyuna and sunni post their weights i never have a problem with it bc they always emphasized the weight gain and how they’ve been working hard to do so, but the way somi posting it especially considering her audience (??) is i’m assuming younger rubs me the wrong way. i was a huge fan of hers during produce so i rlly do hope that she’s healthy now, being the same age as her it’s hard to imagine how much she’s faced in the industry

I think that somi is gorgeous, I was a bit shocked seeing her in dumb dumb after such a long time and I’m not going to lie that i was questioning myself about her weight. But as long as she feels healthy, that’s all that matters. In my opinion, people should not give hate to kpop artists, they don’t have choice about how they look. Korean entertainment has very high expectations on their artists. So people should be mad at the industry who is very harsh with them.

People needs to realized over-excercising is also part of ED. I hope Somi is happy and healthy now, but I don't trust any idol when it comes to their weight. Having muscles doesn't mean they are healthier compare to restricted eating, esp if they are underweight. Im not gonna judge her appearance, but i think younger people should be more skeptical of these idols and what their version of healthy is..
@Nice-sz4ee2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think it’s bad to comment on the idol’s weight obsessively since they’re already put under enough scrutiny. At the same time, it’s important for fans to acknowledge how warped the beauty standards are and the expectations idols have to live up to often times take drastic unhealthy measures. Just because the weight loss was obtained through working out, doesn’t mean it might not be a concern. Just because an idol is born with a thin body, doesn’t mean they have an ED. These distinctions are important to understand as well as the decency to not spam the idol’s pages with weight discussions. It just furthers this unhealthy obsession over body image.
