@Nessie Stone i think you should check the radio show yourself and if you don’t know korean, find the translation on twitter someone posted it. she DIDN’T EVEN mentioned that everyday has been a living hell and had 3 iv drips. yes, she did get an iv before coming to the radio show but did not said any number. somi also get an iv drip before wwf cb bcs she’s busy preparing for it. based on previous iv drip, it has nothing to do with her diets, it is just her being physically tired with comeback preparation. and i need to clarify that she cried bcs of fans comment about her comeback, saying she’s doing really great and she felt touched by it NOT bcs of iv drips or her diets. and fyi, for this comeback she said she gained muscle so it’s different from previous comeback. i think we should stop talking about someone’s body. we don’t know how much pressure she got. from these past 4 weeks, somi was really happy and i think that’s enough. it’s her body, she know what’s the best for her. as a fans i think we should respect her decision

I'm gonna be honest as a student studying nutrition and medical biology in college. Her exercise routine is great, she clearly has great muscle definition and is keeping her body fit. I'm sure for the most part she is healthy right now, however, that won't change the fact that she is underweight and has been since WYWF. She has better habits now than she did before, but the issue isn't in how she is now, it is about how being underweight will affect her in the future. I can guarantee she is not getting her periods and if she is they are irregular, if she were to ever get sick with the body she currently has it would take a massive toll on her body causing her to take a much longer time to recover than normal. Being underweight can affect fertility, brain function can create fatigue and anaemia (Depending on iron consumption) it is not something that people should be striving for. I genuinely hope she gets some mental health therapy because it's clear that the pressure from the public has given her the impression that being in her healthy weight range is not good and that she can only look good if underweight. The thing that sticks out the most to me is the fact that she posted her height and weight in that post knowing people would see how underweight she is, indicating that she doesn't see the fact that it isn't healthy in the long run. The fact is that she isn't just Korean she is also Canadian, her healthy weight and body range will never be that of a petite Korean woman which is what seems to be her goal, because it's simply not in her genes. Somi is only 20 so she's still very young, I just hope that as she matures she stops taking the public's opinion so personally and is able to just live an unbothered healthy life.

Sorry but are you sure you’re a student? Cause when you went into the Somi is mixed territory I was like WTF?!? First, if this was the case where are people up in arms about Yuna from ITZY? She has the same height as Somi and more or less the same body. How is Yuna fitting into your asian “petite” body stereotype?!?!?! And also where is the hate there? Or even worry. None. Also and more WORRYINGLY to say Somi doesn’t get her period is a HUGE assumption, one that I bet you are NOT qualified to opinionate ( even as a student). Not only that but you ALSO don’t have access to her diet, exercise routine and lifestyle to give a diagnosis on her healthy.

I can agree with you. I took health sciences as my science courses in university and we’re taught that a little bit of extra fat is necessary for protection of organs and other vital functions. It’s generally commonly understood that definition in the abs or having abs without flexing isn’t necessarily the proper indicator for health. I used to do a deprivation diet and I actually did have issues with anemia and loss of my period even though I was not nearly as thin. I’m also full East Asian. I’m apple shaped so not exactly that petite, though I’m obviously smaller than most westerners. Not all, but on average. It’s a statistically fair assumption, though it might raise an eyebrow or two depending on the person.

@@Didi_Online Yes Yuna is underweight too… most idols are. Literally so many senior idols talk about the pressure to diet and how they feel so much healthier and better now that they put on weight. It’s a rough industry. Yuna and Somi are both underweight but I guess the thing about somi is she has publicised her eating habits so much people are bound to talk about it meanwhile Yuna seems to either be more ‘naturally’ thin or not expose her diet so much. If you didn’t know asian people have lower bone density so they are naturally thinner, somi being mixed is actually a very fair comment.

@@Didi_Online there is a video on this channel about yuna as well. first of all, yuna always has been skinny and had this body type if you take a look at her pre-debut pictures (she used to be an athlete btw). that's the difference, yuna seems to be naturally on the skinnier side while somi not as much. both of them were in the spotlight since they were like only 15, somi has shown a lot of weight fluctuations that yuna hasn't. yuna has never shown some weird thought towards food, eating pattern or other symptions either. she's the member with the most consistent energy. (of course that's just what we see and i know that basically all idols are under a diet) but still, you can't compare these both + as someone who follows itzy there were indeed hate & body shaming comments towards yuna especially the last comeback. same as always, knetz praised her figure while international fans were "worried" yet commented mean stuff.

A lot of you requested this but I also wanted to remake the older video. After reading some comments there was a frequent critique that my last video was interpreted a bit mean or hostile towards Somi and that was not my intention. So I changed a bit of the wording that may have left negative feelings. I noticed a lot more comments tearing her down on that video as well and thought I needed to go deeper into the life Somi has lived up until now. Somi is not at fault for the things that happened to her. The people who criticized her in IOI or pre-debut or in YG were purely based off her looks and superficial reasons, and not because she did anything wrong. Somi has faced a lot of pain and hurt deeply ingrained in her since she was an elementary kid in school for being half white and looking different. Everyone keeps sending mixed messages about her body, she is just trying to cope with that. You can't fat shame her and then get mad when she loses the weight.

A thing I noticed is that when idols defend themselves and their eating a lot they can't win. It's better to just let people talk, because they'll always find something to pick apart so if you don't say anything they have nothing to base their "arguments" on. I'm always so sad when idols have to defend their every move to their fans. The fans aren't entitled to their lives, they get no say in what they eat, when they sleep, who they are friends with or who they date. They're not family, nor friends. They're fans. If they don't like an idol, fine. Don't. But don't hate. If they like an idol, fine. But don't feel entitled to anything in their lives.

@@anewfuture9975 okay so there are a couple of things I want to make clear. 1: idk who that is and am not interested, but from a scientific pov you can't last very long without eating and still maintain muscle definition. Not that that person is lying or anything but muscles need protein & if you're consistently exercising then you'll need to eat to keep that muscle. 2: many people do think that she's starving herself to stay thin, but a more likely reality is that she just isnt overeating. Everyone has a natural weight that their body is most comfortable at. I was also her size once and when i gained the recommended weight i felt horrible & sluggish. So just because she looks too skinny to you doesn't mean she's not healthy. Many doctors have discredited that bmi chart anyway. 3: how can you overexercise? She's always been an athlete so she should be consistently challenging herself to keep fit.

The idol industry is so toxic. I never noticed her weight gain/loss but I have heard about her diets recently. (Though I did noticed how thin she was this most recent cb.) It’s so sad to see that she’s been struggling with this since she was so young. I hope she gets the help she needs and that more people around her try to help her as well. I’ve never had an ED but I have tried dieting multiple times before. I’ve tried cutting food out and just starving myself but it’s all ended poorly as I’m always hungry and after the “diet”, I would just gain even more weight. It’s really not healthy and I’ve learned that. I hope that she learns to ignore the people who talk about her weight. People who waste their time talking about other people’s weights and looks are the ones that are the most insecure and are always projecting themselves. It’s so sad.

It's pretty sad that in order to please the audience she had to lose weight dramatically, in order to feel good in her own skin. The media can be so cruel, and don't even get me started on netizens. I mean I get it that she's feeling good now, but I can't help but to think that this is sending a message of "you gotta be skinny to be happy" when the truth, is that it's not. She's a strong figure, gaining a crazy amount of popularity (cause she deserves it) but as she's so influential, she should send a message of love and acceptance instead of promoting unreachable beauty standards, by following them. It hurts even more cause she was never "fat" she looks like a regular teenager, in the perfect weight. I found this problem with many other idols and celebrities, and I just wanted to address it. All the best to Somi and her solo career tho, hope she's doing well.

Thank you for this comment. I was disappointed because this channel is usually pretty objective and good about identifying disordered behavior; but both the video and comments are seriously concerning. I think Somi is one of the most beautiful women in the industry, but she has a BMI of 16 (which we can verify, since she publicly posted it) and has started referring to her very normal-sized teenage self as "too big" and "chubby". Coupled with her history of starvation diets and unending pressure from every which way, it's shocking that people even try to assert this weight loss is healthy. Working out doesn't make someone healthy (excessive exercise is actually a component of both anorexia and orthorexia in many cases), and just because she's bubbly onstage and in interviews it doesn't mean her body is in good condition. And to everyone saying it's natural to be underweight, and not to skinny shame-it's not shaming to point out that being underweight carries a litany of health risks, many of which won't be seen for decades and by that point it is too late to undo the heart damage and osteoporosis. Also, there's a strong correlation with decreased immune function, so whether or not Somi has an eating disorder we can be 100% sure she is less healthy than she would be in a normal weight range which, for her height, starts at 122 pounds.

That’s not normal. I feel like she still hasn’t let go of her past eating habits. (Which isn’t her fault) Only difference now is she found a way to maintain that weight. No matter what anyone says, this is not a healthy weight for her height. Her bmi indicates that she is underweight. Period. The only people to blame are her haters. The only thing I have a problem with is your statement about BMI. Hasn't it already been confirmed that the Body Mass Index as a measurement of health has been debunked? It doesn't take into account age, sex, & even different ethnicities, as BMI derives from research on White Europeans. She's an adult women who works out & has resources to optimize a routine specifically for her. She's also mixed race, so her different ancestry compared to Koreans can be a factor in fat distribution & how her body carries her overall weight. We do not know all the facts & just saying the BMI says it all is simply delusional. She's a grown woman & she seems confident in herself now. Plus, her openly discussing these body issues to the public says a lot about how she feels about people commenting on her body like this. If she says she's doing fine then we should believe her, unless something comes up that contradicts what she says.

I would like to add that a study from Harvard found that Asians are 2x likely to develop diabetes and heart-related diseases at the same bmi compared to any other race! BMI is inaccurate in general, but even more inaccurate for Asians. We Asians have a higher percentage fat and a smaller bone structure. Using the American BMI, I fall in the underweight category. But using the BMI for Asians, I fall in the top half of the “healthy” category. So yeah for us, there are more health benefits at being at a low weight than a higher one. As Somi is mixed, Her genetic composition is most likely different from an average white woman and Asian. As long someone is getting the right nutrients, not fatigued, functioning organs, not missing periods and healthy mentally, weight shouldn’t be a problem.

While I do think she looks great and her exercise discipline is admirable, it’s hard not to think that her diet might be a little bit too restrictive still. A little bit of fat around the abdomen is perfectly normal and is actually there to protect your organs. Not having defined abs without flexing does not mean that you are fat or out of shape, that’s just what beauty culture tells people. There are legitimate health risks to being overly underweight including malnutrition, bone issues, immune function. I have issues with anemia at times and I can understand some concern (I’m not super thin, my BMI is at the lower end of normal) That said criticizing her or blaming or for being a bad influence aint it. People who would attack someone for their weight probably aren’t genuinely concerned. Instead just send her messages that she’s loved and appreciated unconditional to her weight.

someone in the comments below already mentioned, but her weight is not really considered healthy for her height--it is very much underweight. and it seems to me her body WANTS to be at a higher (and tbh healthier) weight, based on everything in this video. while she may eat enough (according to her), over-exercising is also a form of an eating disorder, and she stressed a few times how much she exercises. she clearly has struggled with her relationship with food and her body (not helped by the public obsessing over every pound!), so it's hard for me to believe this is a healthy state for her. her "heavy" weight was completely normal and she looked great, ESPECIALLY for a teenager who was still growing and whose body shape was changing anyway. this standard for idols is very dangerous and somi is not immune to that pressure--i hope health professionals are monitoring her and helping her! she is very gorgeous and absolutely killing it, so I just wish her the best and don't want to see her struggle continue.

Why are there people who defend this extreme change? Somi has a health problem. She has been famous since she was little, her body is not naturally slim. Being so thin is not the usual thing, it is a demand (especially in Asia, not in some countries of America, for example) Somi demonstrated for many years how she has an obsession with her weight, speaking of extreme and unhealthy diets. Raising and lowering her weight a lot, It was ATTRACTION (sorry Idk how said that in English specifically) There is no more obvious proof than that, but some people still say that she is fine. Somi needs help, I hope she gets it. But there are stupid people who say things like it's because she's a woman, wtf sis, learn about eating disorders. Educate yourself. And question the real culprits of that, the society (in this case Koreans) that forces a girl who has that weight and does that type of diet and even worse, to make herself see that it is okay to be a clear BAD EXAMPLE for other girls. Sorry for my bad English.

But above all I just want to say to Somi that I am super proud of her, she has grown, she sings so beautifully... You inspire me.. You have taught me that hard work really pays off at the end and we should never give up...my biggest hope is that while growing in the entertainment industry you find happiness in yourself, you smile more...❤️❤️❤️

Coming from someone who has always been a normal/healthy weight and done sports: the thing that baffles me is the thousands of kpop fans who fight for their lives defending the toxic beauty standards and diet culture. Most, if not all, kpop idols are extremely skinny and many are underweight, the large majority are on or have been on (extreme) diets and had stressful/strenuous lifestyles (training and constantly being active). It is extremely obvious how many of them are not at a natural or healthy weight and should not be promoting the heavy diet and skinny culture (which leads to eating disorders and is extremely prevelent in korean and east asian culture and society). These idols are almost always making comments themselves about being on diets and losing weight and not wanting to look 'puffy' (i.e: chubby or fat) - this is so toxic and in fact many people who get into kpop do suffer self-confidence, appearance and eating issues because like it or not kpop (as a korean entertainment branch thus expressing some korean culture and customs of their society) does push this diet culture and normalises being underweight and under-eating. Yet there are still these fans in every single comment section (etc etc) going on about how their idols are so pretty like this and people who say anything negative are just jealous - it is not that, it's the fact that it is extremely toxic and is being exposed and broadcasted to young girls as though it is normal or healthy. This whole part of kpop (and society in general) is extremely harmful in so many ways. It is like how people still go on so agressively about how Wonyoung (who is definitely underweight) or Somi (or many other kpop idols) are at a healthy weight or that it should be a normalised weight (shown by the countless "Following xyz idol diet" videos) when it just should not. If they want to be that skinny then fine but the millions of people in the kpop community should not be acting like it is something to praise. These fans blindly promoting or ignoring all this stuff is just generally aggravating and ignorant - especially as whenever someone says anything they just blame them of body shaming or 'skinny shaming' (which is beyong idiotic and people need to educate themselves). There are so so many issues regarding the people who are in the kpop community and their ignorant and agressively defensive/in denial attitude (which is often because most of you idolise being that skinny) towards these kinds of things is definitely one of them

16:03 its very much a strawman to think the people who dislike disordered eating are the same exact ones who fat shame Somi. Shes skinnyspiration period. And she has said she struggled so much dieting, thinking shes fat when shes not, and "working out like crazy". I don't like the vibe of defending this mindset. it's not her fault, but its her companie's and fans skinny standards that are at fault, i will never defend that. we need to tell the COMPANIES to stop forcing those diets.

I just wish people who’d never had an eating disorder would just shut up. There’s so much more that goes into it than just “wanting to be thin”. Don’t get me wrong. Those of us WITH eating disorders can be wrong too. We don’t know everything, and, of course, everyone likes being right. But we at least have some sort of idea of what we’re looking at. People with no ED, or mental illness in general, really have NO IDEA People who get backlash for even being suspected of having an eating disorder, I just feel so bad for them. No explanation is ever good enough, especially when you literally DONT HAVE ONE (i.e. Sunmi and Rosé). I hope those under backlash understand that you don’t owe every single person an explanation because some people are just never satisfied

In my opinion, Somi looks so much happier and healthier now than she has ever been these past few years. I don’t think y’all understand that calling someone fat is just as bad as calling someone underweight or assuming someone has an unhealthy regimen just for looking physically different. Somi has always been stunning and has only gotten more gorgeous this recent comeback. If you’re her true fan, stop making your pretend-pity statements like “omg she looks too skinny I hope she’s eating :(((“ because that is so two-faced and incredibly insensitive because Somi has stated that she is in good health. Nonetheless, we need to respect her and support her without pushing our expectations or standards on her. At the end of the day, nobody has the right to judge ANYBODY. So let’s stop bringing people down, and focus on bringing people UP! Somi, I know you may never see this but I want you to know you look lovely and happy and that’s all that matters. Keep being your amazing self and SLAY QUEEEN ❤️❤️‍🔥💖

I'm not even a gg fan, but I have to say, Somi's story in the industry is ONE of the most toxic if not the most. Openly talking about binging purging while portraying it as "healthy", showing clear signs of Ed, the starving, the famous "Somi diet" (that a lot of people STILL try), always having talks revolving around her body almost every comeback (not only from herself and her diet talks but also her supposed fans), the yo-yo dieting... Man the list just goes on. I'd definitely like to add that while it entirely isn't her fault, the industry IS toxic, and haters DO take absolute shit on anyone and everyone, we have to say that her whole story is genuinely triggering in itself, especially for people with a history of EDs. I remember being so triggered when I was first introduced to her and Momo's stories (actually a lot of other female idols) during the peak of my ED. End note, working out is important, her muscle definition is AMAZING, but that does not and will never outweight her obsession with the numbers on the scale, and ultimately the toxic standards it creates for aspiring fans.

You know the problem is that people are not satisfied with anything. If she becomes thin then they say she's so thin n all n if she's a bit healthy then they say oh hey she's so fat. Why don't people let artists be themselves and be confident in who they are. I feel they are human beings like us afterall. They have feelings too. I really wanna ask to the people who say these to her if the same would have happened to them then they would have gone into depression. She's still standing and trying her best. Let her breathe man.

I get what this video is saying, but if Somi has a history of eating disorder, and then gets so tiny like that, it will be concerning for fans of Somi since her earlier eras. Honestly, I've been a fan of Somi since birthday era, and when I saw she lost weight, I didn't judge, I saw that she wasn't that different from her wywf era, and honestly with the wywf era I thought she has just lost baby fat from her face, which I do and I'm her age. But yea, the wywf era and dumb dumb era, she just defined her muscles. I'm glad that she is dieting properly. Me personally, I hate the idea of dieting because it can become unhealthy very quickly, especially with k-beauty standards, and the different stories I've heard that idols have had to go through (i.e. Momo from twice having to eat ice cubes for a week to lose enough weight to debut.. that's crazy!!). I don't think superficial judgement helps either, because that can cause idols to starve themselves or binge eat (which are things that Somi has done consecutively). It is a bit alarming hearing her history with dieting, but I will still support her. I just don't want Somi to go back to having an eating disorder. Just to clarify if you are starving yourself to lose weight, that is an eating disorder, if you are starving yourself all day and them binge eating that is also an eating disorder. As long as Somi's relationship with food and her weight is healthy, she will be healthy. We all need to support her, and pray for her that she will make the best decisions for herself.

Little girls who look up to her see that and they think that they should look like that as well. We all know that they literally call her a living barbie and we all know how barbies look right. So as much as I love her and worry about her I wish her the best but saying she's healthy with BMI 15.7 is just not right. SORRY
