Bobbi is mission oriented. She needs a task. And, yes, she’s righteous but she’s also been cast aside by the very structure which she toiled and fought so hard for. When we met her, we found out she hates sitting around and doing nothing. At the time, it was the tense detente between Mars and Earth. So, yes, she’s making bad choices but, for someone in her psychological position, there’s a logic to those poor choices. She was entrusted by a group, earned her way in, and was given a mission. It’s a criminal group and their mission is illegal but she can rationalize the illegality as just another obstacle for Bobbi goddamn Draper to overcome. Again, it really isn’t _her_ but it’s all she has right now.

Water is heavy, really really heavy, "a pint's a pound the world around". When the tsunami hits the thick metal, it would press up against the structure like pressing tinfoil against tree bark. That would seal the entrance with maybe a few leaks.

I noted that the seal doesn't need to be waterproof just water resistant enough to not flood the cavern until the water recedes. Didn't even think about the pressure it would exert itself against the opening. Like one of the drain plugs in the tub that uses water pressure and weight to keep itself sealed. Good point!

A veteran comes home from war and is mistreated and abandoned by her government, can't get her life on track in a civilian life where her skills that made her good for war aren't translating, and is forced to turn to crime to survive and feel useful again. Maybe it's just because I'm American but that seems like an entirely understandable and all too real plot line.

There may also be some team loyalty involved, she didn't choose to join the team of criminals but once she was part of it she may feel obliged to help them. I'm a little reminded of the TV show "Barry" here, there's some overlaps in the themes

In the books, they explain the original objectives in trying to actually grow stuff. Short version: there is life and plants that do exist on the planet. They landed in an area that was similar to parts of Utah during winter. But the biology and chemistry of the plants and animals was so different that they cant eat it or grow things in the ground as any plants they would use would die.

This will be a problem irl if we ever find other planets with biospheres. In all likelyhood they will be completely incompatible with all Earth biology, down to the chemical composition of the genetic material. Anything from Earth be sickened or killed by exposure to most things there and anything there will suffer the same if exposed to our biology.

One of the Belters mentioned they'd seen some fairly advanced animals (lizards). But the problem, noted more heavily in the books, is that the life that developed on the other planets is of a completely different type, biologically incompatible with Earth life at the biological level. Chemical reactions, however, still occur. Two things to note about Esai: He calmly shook off LeLe's hand, and he seemed genuinely concerned about Bobbie. The "Bobbie stuff" seems more disconnected because it was originally written as a separate novella, but it all comes together. Esai did not kill that station guy, they just tied him up. I think weeks have passed on Illus as well, it's just that not much of anything really happens most days, except Belters and RCE goons staring each other down. We're just seeing the days something significant happens. Wei has feels for Amos that Amos can't reciprocate. Wei certainly can't understand someone like that.

I've been waiting for you to get to this episode. After first watching this episode, out of curiosity, I decided to research just how big the explosion was. In the show, they said the explosion was approximately 50,000 exajoules. That's equal to an 11,950.29 gigaton bomb, or a 11,950,290 megaton bomb. The largest bomb ever detonated in human history was the Tsar Bomb. It had a maximum yield of 100 megatons, but out of fear that detonating it at its maximum yield would destroy the planet, they reduced it to approximately 50 megatons for the test. Which means the explosion of the alien fusion reactor was equal to approximately 239,005.8 Tsar bombs. That is absolutely terrifying, and is a display of only a fraction of a percent of the power wielded by the ring builders. Also, it's never mentioned in the show, but the books say the reason Ilus has so many large fusion reactors is that the planet is basically one giant power plant for multiple planets connected via the ring gates. The reason for this is the amount of lithium on Ilus and in its star system is higher than on any other planet/system in the ring gate network. That's also why one of the 12 moons melted: they are power transmitters that broke down trying to relieve some of pressure from all the reactors starting back up, but had nowhere to send all that energy.

The writers made Klaes Ashford a much more interesting and compelling character in the show. In the books, he breaks under the pressure of command and goes insane (does the whole civil war on the Behemoth, but is just a dick instead of being a guy who you can relate to and understand the reasons for his actions). I don't remember clearly, but i think he does die or is arrested during his confrontation with Holden when he tries to destroy the ring gate with the laser. Also, sad backstory to his show character, the video of the baby he was watching was of him with the child he lost.

Yeah, I think that video in this episode showed us the how the book and show version of the character split; One lost his kid and received the burns, since he chose not to surrender. He would go on to be a sort of role model for Belter pirates. And became a stronger character. And so, the show version of Ashford earned his place on the Behemoth. The book version didn’t lose his child or get burned. He instead surrendered to save his child. And tried to settle down from his piracy afterwards, which he wasn’t well suited for. He turned to the bottle for his escapism. Which made him a weaker character. Here, Dos sent him to the Behemoth out of respect for the man that he once was, hoping that the position would snap him back. But, it’s hard to come back from broken.

In the books, Ilus has a lush, though somewhat primitive ecosystem, like the Earth's Cretatious era. The timeline is, life developes on Ilus, the protomolecule hijacks it to build the ring, then builds all the stuff on the planet. When the Nucleus shutdown the ring network everything on Ilus shutdown. This allowed a second abiogenesis, a second start to life, that then developed around all the protomolecule ruins.

Remember, the writers in this show play the long game, and while we always get reveals that explain character motivations, we never get them straight away. We only discover them *when the other characters do* . Right now, some motivations remain opaque -- but they won't always. That was a very nice analysis of how Marco Inaros is able to do the things he's doing. Bravo! There's just one more thing to keep in mind -- Inaros *is not* a passive player, in this situation.

A lot of people are talking about how the biology is radically different. But really, it doesn't even need to be radically different to be a problem. You can have the same plants and animals that are functionally the same, but if they evolved with organic compounds that have the mirror to their chiral handedness, then it would be a big problem. We have had a bunch of different medicines that are laboratory produced to create a big batch of chemically identical molecules, but 50% are left handed chiral, and the other 50% right. One of those can have great healthy effects, and the other can lead to horrible side effectives. Thalidomide was a big one with birth defects. Ibuprofen is another one (the one half is just inactive). Look up chiral medicine or stereochemistry sometime, it's fascinating stuff!

The Expanse is like a fractal. It has a self-similar shape that is seen at multiple levels of zoom. With the exception perhaps of S6, each season (and semi-season in S2 and S3, where the book endings are) starts with a slow brooding burn, gradually ramps bit by bit, and then goes bat-shit crazy in the last couple of episodes. Each episode, more or less, does the same. Seasons 1 to 3, taken overall, does the same. So the first half of S4 is back to slow and brooding. Like an exponential build. Now you're getting to the cusp of the bat-shit.

You build to it and the payoff is worth the journey. A lot of what you talk about are answered later in the season and then followed in the next seasons. It’s a long game show that doesn’t rely on instant gratification. Some of your payoffs come later which makes them more impactful when they come later.

Here is a possible head cannon for the pointy structures in Ilus: We see the structures exchange energy in the form of lightning with the atmosfere, charges tend to accumulate in pointy regions, so the shape of the structure might help direct the energy it exchanges and might help it being hit by lightining when needed. Also, they biologically looking like way it's shape beyong the pointing bit, resembling bone, is consistent with the Protomolecule Creators MO: Highjack self replicating things, make them self replicate into whatever you want, so their structures might be grown, not built.

Most people have a strange notion about "honor" and what it entails. For a person to be honorable they must demonstrate that they have the courage to execute any duty that they accept freely and by their own will, where "courage" is defined as the willingness to endure discomfort (up to and including death) to fulfill their objective.

_"For a person to be honorable they must demonstrate that they have the courage to execute any duty that they accept freely and by their own will"_ For the moment ignoring that "duty/obligation/responsibility" is a myth, how is it "duty" if it's only when accepted?

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps, this involves a concept that goes mostly unacknowledged by the average person which is "informed consent." If you have not explained to me what you want me to do and have gotten my agreement to do it, then I am under no obligation to "perform" any "duty." However, once I have accepted what you want me to do, then as an "honorable" person I will execute that task to the very best of my ability.

@@LeeCarlson So, as an example, a husband who does not understand that, as part of their marriage, the wife expected him to open doors and pull out the chair for her is under no "obligation" to do those things but once she explains it and he accepts it, as an honorable person, it is now the husband's "duty" to do those things to the very best of his ability?

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps, that is actually a pretty good example, though I would offer that a young man (or woman) that has been properly raised would understand that opening doors and pulling out chairs is a sign of respect and having learned that would accept the duty to do so for any person that they respected their wife (or anyone else).

@@LeeCarlson _"though I would offer that a young man (or woman) that has been properly raised"_ Well, that is subjective as some women today might find that antiquatedbehavior, maybe even sexist, similar to "The man will bring home the bacon". _"would understand that opening doors and pulling out chairs is a sign of respect and having learned that would accept the duty to do so for any person that they respected their wife (or anyone else)."_ But is it a "duty" if the man in question is unaware of the expectation? I am of course asking to understand your viewpoint as, again, I am putting aside that "duty" is a myth.

This season does feel weaker than the others to me (still awesome but when compared to the rest...). That said, on a rewatch you realise how important certain events this season are further down the line (no spoilers!)

When I first watched it, it was a binge, which I couldn't do with the first three seasons. I suspect if I watched it weekly, like 1-3, I would've enjoyed it a lot more.
