If you need to get to NYC quick, you are right, Amtrak should not be your method of transportation. However, if you have the time for a nice relaxed ride, it is rather enjoyable (at least in my mind)

Via I-76 to I-78 is 6 hr (add 5-15 Mins if you shift to I-80 at some point).
