Film classics like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago” made Omar Sharif a world star. He was an actor, bridge player, nomad, womanizer and loved life. This portrait shows a man full of contradictions, who loved playing bridge more than the film business and who lived half of his life in hotels.

I was sitting at the bar late one night in Rome having a drink when he walked up next to me and asked the bartender for something. He looked at me and gave me that infamous Omar Sharif gap-toothed smile, and I melted.

I was six years old and in Kindergärten when I fell in love with Omar! That year I invited a first grader to my birthday party 😅.... I also lived all over the world and 2000 I moved to Paris. While my home renovations were being completed, I lived at the Royal Monceau in Paris. Omar had been living there for years. We became friends and it was the highlight of my life. Omar Sharif is a fabulous man, the love of my life 🙈💞💖

He loved life above all, and life gave him the everything or the nothing, and the whatever in-between to create and perform his greatest role: a lover of life. The fortune was not monetary, nor in celebrity, but the fact that his love for life was seen , crafted, and shared, so deeply and lovingly, by others AND Omar Sharif, whether one knew him personally or not. His generosity of spirit, as an actor and as a man - on screen and off - embraced us all and that will always warm our hearts.

@@melodyelson3202 I agree, but perhaps he was showing his consideration, knowing his own nature, perhaps he felt the divorce would save her from the humiliation of being cheated on as a married woman. Also his public support for his gay grandson was very touching. I found this documentary genuinely moving, I felt you captured his essential spirit, one wrestles, and unsettled, yet warm and giving. What a wonderful documentary. You never know what people endure as you envy what you imagine their lives to be. He had talent, intellect, good looks, but also what seemed like a profound loneliness as well. His entire career I never knew he had a son and grandson. I loved the authentic story through their eyes. Thy did not judge him, but came to accept him as he was. I remember positively being smitten with him in Funny Girl. Interesting his role in that film was Nicky Armstrong’s, a gambler. Was it life imitating art? Or art imitating his life. I’m glad he got his flowers while he lived. It was a cruel irony that a man who spent his years using his memory and intellectual gifts, would succumb to Alzheimer’s. Glad he had loved ones to care for him. I shall revisit his films. Rest in eternal Peace Mr. Sharif!

Omar was Eastern Orthodox, not Roman Catholic. He was Lebanese and Syrian, born in Egypt. The Christians in Egypt are Coptic, also under the Eastern Orthodox umbrella. He was born into the "Greek" Melkite (sp?) branch. Catholic is originally an ancient Greek word "kata' about, 'holos" whole.

I think I have been in love with him all of my life & the only person I have ever had a desire to meet. or should I say, sit down with him over a cup of coffee, & just be hypnotised, by those eyes & that voice. I always found him beautiful, but what I love most about his face is seeing emotions in it so clearly. His son, Tarek, what a charmer! Super charismatic. Thanks for the documentary which I think was very well done. The comments are all over the place but I guess you just see what is inside you and I actually didn't see anything negative in the portrayal of this man other than he probably suffered from not having a family life but he did have a son who stood by him & a grandson who adores him and that's more than a lot of people have even if they, quote unquote, have a family. He was a marvellous actor and yes he was extremely handsome so that helped but I think he knew what he was about when he approached the role & he could manifest the character in its entirety from the inside out. I gather that he and Peter O'Toole became friends when they were doing Lawrence of Arabia and that says something because they were coming from such different backgrounds. He said he actually was not a Christian nor was he a Muslim but he was as an Arab and I think he exemplifies what a true Arab is which is a human being with a great generosity and a great understanding for The World at Large. Yes 9/11 and all the wars that America orchestrated in the Middle East at the behest of the zionists state created the term terrorist and forever more removed the TRUE meaning of what it is to be an Arab and especially an Arab man. This is very unfortunate because just as Britain left harm and destruction in its wake so America does the same-- everywhere they go. I am a Daughter of the American Revolution and I do NOT know my country. Bush Junior-- due to his lack of intelligence-- was manipulated by the VP and all the other people in the administration, abd since 911 we have gone down a very dark road that we were warned about by President Eisenhower but we failed to heed his warning and we now have ceased to be a democracy but we are instead a military dictatorship. I was warned once many decades ago by a foreigner in America-- Just be careful. DON'T ever have the military come in and take over. AND I thought how ridiculous is that. ACTUALLY not only has that happen but it is happening in spades because the pilice are trained by the zionist state which terrorizes people and tortures people & American police does that now to its own people, especially to a young people in University and most especially to the Jewish young people in University who protest against genocide. And then you bring in the state troopers and then you bring in all the other military groups we have in this country to brutalize the peaceful protesters exercising their RIGHT under the FIRST AMENDMENT , so we don't need to bring in the big military because they're out causing havoc in the rest of the world anyway. Omar Sharif was a great man in his own small way and by people with big hea❤❤rts and open minds, he will be seen and felt that way. 🕊️

Lovely documentary. There seemed to be an air of loneliness about him always, even when he was at the height of his fame-- a loneliness he tried to fill with bridge and horses (and perhaps women, although that wasn't detailed). A shame he didn't put that same level of dedication/passion/time into strengthening his relationship with his son while he was young. It was interesting to see how differently his son and grandson saw him. Both saw him clearly for who he was, but the grandson had a softer/more tender view of his grandfather and namesake, while the son had a more stark, at times bitter, view of the man who was more friend than father to him.

I was flying trips Miami to Madid I think around the mid-nineties. One morning in the Madrid hotel lobby while waiting to head out to the airport I looked up seated across from me was Omar Sharif. One of the flight attendants told me he was in Madrid for a bridge tournament. Back in the early sixties in Nashville I remembered going by myself to see Lawrence of Arabia and it had remained my favorite movie and sitting across from me was one of the great actors from that movie.

Some families address parents by their first names. When I was in elementary school( 6 or 7), my schoolmates and neighbors called their mother Vy, by her first name, whom they distinguished from their grandmother, who was Mama. They were Black Americans. My step kids called their dad by his first name, and they were German. I see it across many cultures and to me it means that’s their choice. Respecting the person and relationship is more important than a name,

His son did explain that they were friends more than father and son. Their history confirms that fact.

@@indranidasgupta8982 True, but calling your dead parents in a documentary by the first name and not Mom or Dad is really telling a lot. But I like that he always talked respectfully about his father. I'm sure a lot happened that he preferred to keep private. And that's totally fine.

@@montgomeryclift2480 it struck me as a little odd too, but I think they call their dads by a name that westerners won't even recognize (it's usually abba or abbu or something) so he may have just decided to call him by his name. I chose to ignore it because it seemed they were very close in the end, and he was very protective of his father. He seems like a good son.

That is a big LIE he was not a womanizer!! He married only one woman despite the fact he and his wife living separate for decades he did not divorce her! He had the same housekeeper for 30 years, she had great respect for him.

Wonderful actor. I was a girl ( pre teen), and fell in love with him .Loved his movies . He was charming, handsome and had a flair that just him had. He was real foreigner through my eyes of a Brazilian girl, from an exotic land.I am happy to hear he lived a life style that made him happy and even though he was a perfect father his family loved him. By not marrying again he realized that he was not the kind of man to be in a monogamous relationship and perhaps he never stopped loving his ex wife.

Met Omar at a military base in California -- the presidio-- I saw the movie " Dr Zhivago" -- the music , the Russian scenery, and of course the love story -- I must have seen that movie ten times -- like a lot of actors -- came out to our base -- this was during the Vietnam -- we had a lot of patience -- I was just a WAC working at Letterman General hospital !!
