Modern self-improvement is a great start, but as time passes, it is veering further into nihilistic and narcissistic territory. If you're doing the basics, but you still feel lost, purposeless, or without direction, self-authentication can serve as a more integrated and personalised practice/way of life.
Self-authentication focuses on the development of skills, virtues, and character traits, not on their external manifestations.
They say 'the good shit sticks', and self-authentication is the culmination of everything that has stuck with me throughout my 4-year journey of bettering myself and achieving my dream life as a byproduct. I based much of this on the work of Jordan Peterson, John Vervaeke, and Iain McGilchrist, three scientists on the front lines of the meaning crisis, as well as the work of many of the ancient stoic philosophers and some other sources.
I will follow up with future videos focused on each of the individual elements of the practice, but this video is an introduction, and should get the conversation going, while providing enough information that you can get started today.
Self-authentication should provide you with not only the 'things' you want in the long run but also move you towards a greater sense of meaning in life.
Channel overview:
A few years ago, I was stuck in bed, hating the universe for subjecting me to the 'sick and twisted game of life' without my consent. I was pathetic.
It was only after I realized something very important that things began getting better... life didn't suck; I did.
In the absence of friction, my mind was conjuring its own, so life was hard, yes, but it didn't have to be. The suffering was unnecessary. After a few years of incremental progress, I'm having the time of my life. I've never been in better shape, my mind has never been sharper, I've never experienced so much happiness, and it's all rooted in a deep sense of meaning that was once absent.
I had to shake myself of lots of old beliefs and patterns to get to where I am, and I believe there are millions of other people who feel stuck and could learn from my mistakes. So that's why I'm starting this channel: to share some of the insights that formed the foundation of the psychological habitat I now occupy.
I don't know exactly how the channel will develop but I'm going to start by posting my raw ideas as that's the only thing I can consistently do at this point in time.
I hope it helps!

@@AngeloSomers Oh bet lol, I know I'm ruining the whole vibe but please keep up the good work man, most of these "motivation/self-help faceless channels are just unethical means to attract vulnerable insecure young men to make money. I am a testament for that, I have also tried to prey on people like that and attack their insecurities instead of giving well-researched and experienced advice. Same goes for the ones who do show a face too, they show their face and openly steal money. You are doing something different and I really appreciate that.

Love how everyone who's trying to present himself as an individual on his self improvement path has to publicly announce it, and give the very same examples of how he does it: gym, hygene routines, podcasts (something like Joe Rogan usually), most popular books on finances. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy

Not how it works like making a vanilla cake there’s keys & recipes to making it and it’s not wrong that everyone has similar or same recipe or way of making it dosent mean its wrong or doesn’t work same with great philosophers & artist thru history when it comes to wisdom & way of life & let’s be honest 99% of ppl don’t even apply & actually do 1/3 of the basic “self improvement” then say it doesn’t work or a “copy” this video is still a “self improvement video” he’s just talking about level 2-3 of self improvement after u get pass the basic stages nun crazy 😂

I love this. It has been something that I have thought about a lot actually. I realized that all of the "self-improvement" stuff is just the same stuff. Almost like people are copying and pasting the same information. I was introduced to the "self-improvement" world a little over a year ago, and I admit, it helped me get a bit higher than where I was at, however, it felt like I eventually plateaued. I was doing the stuff, working out, meditating, journaling, all that stuff, but I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere. Something just felt off about the whole situation. Then I had a realization, that we are all on different paths, and so one set of advice will not help everyone. In fact, it will only help a few individuals compared to the rest of the world. So thank you for making this video. It helps explain this concept in a really good way, and I feel it has helped me to understand what I can do to improve in my own personal path, and how I can figure out what is best for me. You are awesome, keep it up!

Thanks for this, Angelo! Really felt your approach to self-authentication it’s refreshing to see self-improvement framed as something deeply personal rather than just another status boost. Building those skill trees around knowhow, mind states, and character traits hits home, especially for anyone looking to grow from the inside out. It's rare to find advice that pushes us to stay true to our own compass. Appreciate the work you’re putting into this; your perspective brings a lot of value to the journey!

2 weeks ago I was in a situation, where I realized exactly what you said in this Video: I stepped out of my comfort zone and understood for the first time in my life, that overthinking everything with the main goal of not being weird will make me unhappy and stop myself from being who I want to be. So I tried to change in some situations and did things I wanted to do, with no regard what other people will think. The results were incredible and people that triggered my social anxiety, reacted most of the time positivly. And even If not, for the first time I did not care. Sadly since then I got recommended all these other self improvement videos but yours was the first one, that really could deliver what I dont like about modern self improvement. Thank you for the video, you really inspired me and put in to words what I thought and felt in some ways too.

Narcissism? You never were meant to be in this space my friend. As soon as someone says something that doesn’t hurt your feelings, now you’re pretending like you suddenly like self improvement. When you said 14:47 to embarrass yourself I think most people would cringe or think you’re insane but honestly idk why I find this to be something that could be really fun to do for myself. I think about some of my fav artists and Tyler the creator really resonates where he doesn’t care if he’s awkward or who judges him in their minds it’s him being him and his confidence is why he is where he is now in life. I think that practice of self destruction is great for being comfortable with the uncomfortable and building a foundation of unwavering confidence.

This is TRUE self development, learning how to find the parts of ourselves that want to shy away from everything and run away and attacking that.. after accepting that we are deeply flawed as humans, integration. There is no "Adonis" or "gigachad" that's what causes people to separate from themselves. How else can we improve who we are that way? I'm looking forward to seeing more of this narrative from you, I think I will start sharing my own take here as we need more people speaking on the real thing instead of the cookie cutter generic status signalling that's being masked as self development! ngl, its defo like, just seek discomfort, challenge yourself, you being comfy is your greatest flaw. If you truly seek to improve at something, you have to practice and that's all it is, its not easy, you'll be bad at first, but just practice. Just go, start, do it, there's nothing more complex, its just start, practice, improve, repeat. Everything else feels like a positive byproduct of your action.

This is great advice honestly. At the end of the day, a lot of it boils down, just actually do things, cus the only way to get better is by doing them. I've always viewed life as a game in that sense. Want to build confidence? Then do the things you're embarrassed to do. Want to get better at piano? Then play piano. Don't know what you want in life or who you want to be? Meditation. Take that time to actually learn who you are. Face your problems, don't run away from them. Embrace the discomfort, cus it's the only way you're gonna get better at things and the only way you'll find true happiness.

A lot of what you said is true, for me I joined “self improvement” 2 years ago, I was depressed, hating life, and an underlying victim mindset (didn’t realize it was there until it was pointed out by self improvement my gurus). Following the advice of self-improvement which was to avoid victim mindset you need to “get some real hard on your life” to avoid the fake hard that is the victim mindset, so I started working out, eating better, losing weight, and it worked for a while (at curing my depression). But I never actually confronted the underlying reason why I used to eat poorly, why I used to stay up all night and get shitty sleep, I never actually confronted the reason why I hated my life, all I was doing was trying to force it to be better by “getting jacked” and 2 years later I didn’t get jacked and I’m sad again. Confronting the real issue is the only way to deal with it
@MrTaker_
@MrTaker_ 7 ай бұрын
“I didn’t get jacked” is all I really need to know. Of course self improvement isn’t going to improve your life, if your not improving your life! It’s that simple. No matter what this comes down to, it’s still your fault. The point of self improvement is not to just only focus on the gym. Everything you listed was about physical health. These things are very important, however they aren’t magically going to change your life forever. You simply didn’t do self improvement right. You’re supposed to focus on the gym, eating better, AND all of the mental health aspects. You at least realized that you needed to start focusing on mental health but instead of just adding that to what you already did to improve, you stopped EVERYTHING to only focus on mental health. That’s not how you go about it. At that point, it’s purely cope. You needed an excuse to quit, so you made up one. This is not some magical way of thinking that’s better than all of these self improvement “gurus”. The self improvement gurus ALSO focus on their mental health, while ALSO doing the important stuff like going to the gym, eating healthy, etc. You are literally just doing a lesser version of self improvement.
@The_Ilyaa
@The_Ilyaa 7 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I've been looking for & thinking about lately. Most "self-improvement" is just mental masturbation, it's just an online bubble where desperate people are looking to improve their lives, which they do, but only in 1 dimension, but they still stay empty vessels, without any personality, nor originality, living a boring & fake life. The worst part is they never achieve all of their goals, because some of the goals require them to not be empty vessels.

Man, to be honest I didn't expect much, I almost didn't click on the video. But it was solid. I thought it would be a repackaging of pretty much the same, but I liked your pfp and gave it a go. I don't regret it. Also, you speak well, and aren't made of plastic, like most people one sees in these places. Thanks for your framework, I'll implement it. By the way, did you cross yourself in the Orthodox style?

I'd be really curious where you got these terms from. Very interesting video so far. Still watching and will update at the end Edit: watched wll the way through, very good points made. We run from suffering and papier mache over it

I agree. Too many people fall down the rabbit hole of 'self improvement', and it's just fake. I feel like you just need to 'do it'. Sounds kind of stupid and brain dead but it's true. Legit, all you have to do is act on things that you want to change. It ain't that deep.

this doesn’t get enough views because this isn’t flashy enough on selling false hope to people. This is the real truth on how it is but self improvement people don’t want you think that way, they want their way to stick but the reality is that everyone has their own way of life
Alternative self help is brainwashing you.
