I don't think humanity is capable of finding a year to be good until after the fact, to be honest. We, as a species, seem to have an inherent bias against the present. Now, this isn't a bad thing, per say, since it's what drive us to change and innovate. At the same time, though, it means that people will constantly find reasons to bitch and moan. The Stars Wars Fandom is a good example of this. When Disney first bought Lucasfilms, they welcomed it after the mess that was the prequels. But then when Disney started actually making films, suddenly people started to call for Lucas's return and saying that the prequels were totally good, guys.

This song reminds me of an old folk tale. There once were two tapes, the White Tape and the Black Tape. The White Tape showed all of the greatest deeds of good mankind has ever performed, to the degree that the watcher would feel good, but after watching it they could never find themselves to think ill of a man, leading them to blindly make poor, self-destructive choices. The Black Tape, on the other hand, showed nothing but the worst deeds of humanity. Watching this tape would overwhelm the viewer, causing them to lose hope and become a nihilist. Everything is bad, so why bother even trying? Watching either tape on its own would drive the viewer to madness at best, and kill them at worst as they just let themselves go. The only way to safely view the tapes was to watch them both at the same time, down which path lay knowledge and understanding. If we only view our good deeds, and blind ourselves to the bad, then we live in ignorance, and the world suffers for it. If we only view our bad deeds, then we live in fear and lose hope, and we suffer for it. The only way towards understanding is to view both. Understand what we did right, so we can do it again, and understand what we did wrong so we can learn from it and avoid it in the future.
