The control a thing can have over our mind is amazing. Some things I've realized about quitting anything which I've quit many is the success using one strategy and that is fasting. If you stop eating completely for a few days except water you will notice that your desire for everything goes down. That is a good strategy especially for stopping smoking. I drank alcohol daily for 20 years and tried to stop many times and did successfully for periods of months but that dangerous desire to drink would return for me. When I was 38 there were a series of realizations I had unrelated to alcohol that changed my focus quite dramatically. In that time in my life I literally forgot to buy beer on the way home for a month. Then one day I was like, "I haven't drank in a month"? Then I just continued that for many years. I've had some alcohol but my desire to have more that a few in a night is really not something I think about. If you stop for long enough it can be the case where you just don't care about it anymore. Everyone is different. Also, I did not have peace in my earlier life and it was alcohol I turned to to get some peace every night. But I have peace without it now and have for over eight years. Thanks for sharing your experience. Subscribed.

Thank you for you honesty. Also I love your comedic twist on this issue. You talk about negative things, but you present it in a positive way.

Thanks for this. I am now approaching my third week and I still have a slight hangover feeling. I was a bit worried about this but I feel a bit relieved that I am not the only one. Thanks.

Should have mentioned, I am watching this vid, because it's day 21 for me today, and your speaking my feelings, body wise to a T. I was a 3 to 4 pints plus bottle of red most nights, continously, for years. The last 21 days abstenance have seemed easy, I have had to occupy my evenings in different ways, but not been too bad. The increase in well being and so much better sleep has been worth it. I plan to remain alcohol free, the use of AF alternatives did not work for me, as I just had 4 AF Guiness a night and calorie and sugar intake remained to high. Some of the new AF beers are very good, alot are still naff. The wines are rubbish mainly.

Hi Phil - Great video. On day 15 as I type this. I’m also having to use willpower and my blocks (as yours) is to tell people I am taking some time out. Still very restless in the evenings missing the glasses (or bottle and a good bit more) of wine but substituting with tea is helping. Also mega hungry all the time so I have to be careful and keep the biscuits at arms length. My start point came with being fed up with what I can only call “liver pain” just under the right rib. Had all the tests done (I don’t recommend the endoscope) but the docs were puzzled because I never told the truth about my 150 unit a week habit. Anyway - to cut a long story short after 7 days the ache subsided and now after 15 days the annoying pain has almost gone. Will I ever drink again ? Maybe, but I am pretty sure it will be at a very much reduced level - couple of pints of shandy tops

Thanks for your comment Richard. 15 days is tricky but it does start to get easier and I'm glad you're sticking with it. I started suffering from similar pains and, after a period of denial, decided I had to do something about it. I'm back drinking now but at a reduced level and I'm hoping I have changed my relationship with alcohol. Thanks for your comment - Phil

I'm at the 3 week mark and my 3rd bout of gout. My guess is that it is the result of the toxins being flushed, and uric acid sitting in the joints just waiting for something to trigger the crystalisation. You have articulated my experience to a tee.

Hello......GOUT, I used to have it, presumably from xs alcohol, cos before drink I didn't have it. And, oh yes, is it painful 💥🦶, my god, yes it is. Debilitates you, from not being able to put shoes on, to not being able to walk a few steps, no sleep. Yes I feel your pain, quite literally. Go to the docs and ask him to put you on a daily dose of Allopurinol, 200 to 300mg. It took my flare ups away and they haven't returned for 2 years and counting. I was on a 'use as necessary' alternative, called Colchacine, which you take at the first tingling in the toe sensation, and it works very quickly, but has a wonderful side effect of spectacular bouts of diarrhea. Good luck it's a bar steward of an affliction, hope you can get the medication.

19 days for me . The only other change I made was running 1 mile a day. I alredy worked out 1 to 2 times a day for the past 30 years. Nothing had changed for me. Still can't sleep. Don't have any extra energy. I am more bored than usual. I spend money on hobbies and eating more fruit so I'm not save by money. My blood pressure is still high . I'm going to continue to complete a Whole 30 days but so far I'm not happy with the results.
