I'm 51 and TERRIFIED of snakes except the hognose! But i watch snake videos to educate myself about them so i know where to avoid them, learn their habits, etc. I live in Texas so we DO have venomous snakes around, but so far around my house I've seen those small black garter snakes. I'd rather have hognose snakes because at least they don't dart around!

@@monikag1323 snakes are wonderful :) it's nice you're educating yourself about them, because that's how you overcome your fears. garter snakes do no harm and they can actually make great pets!!! they're usually tame especially if you socialize them a lot and they can be quick but they really do no harm. small snakes like them and snakes like ball pythons have very small and gentle bites if they even do

I’m 68 and fascinated by snakes. But like a lot of people, I’m not confident when handling them by myself. Back in the 90’s I bought a beautiful baby corn snake. Hoping I could overcome my anxiety I tried handling her. She never actually bit me but would give me a warning hiss. I kept her for 2 years but as she got bigger and bigger I got even less confident with her. I returned her to the breeder, knowing that she could be rehomed to someone who was more confident than me. Back then there was very little ready advice. If only there was a Snake discovery channel then. If I was a few years younger I would happily go out and buy a Western Hognose. Lovely snakes you have! I have 3 westerns and an eastern hognose myself. My eastern is captive bred, and actually takes f/t mice with no problems. Every now and then I have to rub a bit of toad scent on his mouse to jump-start him eating, but most days he does unscented. He's about a year old now, and eats an unscented hopper mouse every 4-5 days. I'll probably move that to once a week when he's finished growing.

I had a hognose, as a kid. He was beautiful, and very placid, easy to handle. I found him in the back pasture, close to a spring, on our farm. He turned over to play dead (the only time he ever did, after that he was okay with me handling him), and vomited up a toad. So, I knew what he ate! My mother let me put toads in the freezer, for winter food. I kept him a couple of years, then took him back where I found him, and let him go. The only pet reptile I ever had. His colors were very vivid, really pretty snake. 💜

Over this last weekend while at a father-son camp out, my son and I came across what we now know was a Eastern Hognose. This was located along the Chippewa River near Arkansas, WI.. Initially, I checked for the rattle of a rattle-snake, negative. It hissed and swelled its head. My first thought was 'Cobra'...in Wisconsin!?...nope. It slinked off into the woods, didn't play dead at all. And yes the frogs & toads were everywhere that weekend. And now we know. Thank you for the video, Scott & Josh

I found an Eastern yesterday morning, but it's coloration on top was dark and bland. The bottom however was a brilliant rose pinkish color. The top had bands on it, but they were harder to see because of it's more UNATTRACTIVE dark olive coloration. It did literally everything you talked about, including throwing up a blood sac as it was playing dead. It hissed EXTREMELY loudly and bluffed me, before it gave up, turned belly up opened it's mouth stuck out it's tongue, and went completely motionless. I flipped him over a couple of times and lol, he kept just going belly up again. Finally I just left him alone, stood about 10 feet from him, and waited for him to do the coast is clear thing hehe. It took about 7 or 8 minutes, but he finally scampered upon his way. And yes, he bluff struck at me, I'd say about 10 or so times, before he played dead. He was freaking hilarious! And gross. He made a mess all over himself when he played dead. Still hilarious tho. And before anyone on here wants to say something negative, NO I did not hurt him, Nor would I ever do that to a snake. And the only reason I messed with him alittle, is because hognose snakes are fairly rare and knowing what I know about them, I wanted to see if it was all true. Lmao, yes...Yes it is! They are such funny little snakes! This was in Southeast Missouri bythway, about 20 minutes from the Arkansas State line, and about 20 miles from Poplar Bluff Missouri.

Nice work, Sure knows her Hognoses. Wonder what she named the first one, seems to be her fav all through the video.

They are native to southeast Wyoming and we don’t have a huge abundance of toads, they are here but you would really have to look, there are however a TON of field mice, no doubt in my mind that’s part of the reason the westerns are more inclined to eat rodents

The hissing snakes sound like me, when it's winter and cold and snowing.

hey Emily, I'm planning to get a Hognose in a few years but I'm still a bit concerned about heating since here in Malaysia, its pretty warm most of the time. Usually around 30°C but there are times when the temperature reaches 40°C-50°C (on hazy days). So I'm not sure if I still need to get a heat lamp for basking or to keep warm in general, or if I need a cooling pack. I never came across a website or video that mainly talks about snake care in the equatorial countries where its warmer. Can anyone help me out? also I'm sorry if my English is a bit wack. English ain't my first language lol

wow that seems pretty hot. Mine is between 20 and 30C and it seems to like it just fine. I was advised between 22 and 30, up to 35 below the lamp. As far as I understand, they need a spot to warm up and also an area where it's not as hot, to 'escape' to. I don't have any experience with higher temperatures than mine, but I would be very hesitant to proceed without expert advice.

Lol Malaysia doesn't reach 50 Celcius, the hottest is like 30 something as far as I know, average room temperature here is 23 or so, so it is perfectly fine.

@@poofypoofball3879 Maybe they mean by the heat index? The heat index can be drastically hotter or colder than the actual temperature.
