I think Italy, especially southern Italy, and the American South have a lot in common, not just in terms of how important (and tasty) the food is, but also in people's demeanor and traditional values, where family bonds come before everything. We're both places of relative poverty compared to the rest of the country, where people had to make do with what they had and where simplicity informed a lot of our traditions.

My grandfather and family were Italian immigrants who escaped Mussolini's Italy. After joining the military as a young man, he was stationed in Georgia where he met my grandmother....who was a great Southern cook. It's all she knew to cook. Anyway, there were married for 40 years and he never really ate Italian after that. He loved her Southern cooking too much! HA! So, here I am, one-quarter Italian and very Southern. Needless to say, I LOVE good food!

I truly feel for the rest of the world and this country for those who have never tried true Southern food. The breakfast menu reminds me of my youth living in the country and having breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday morning. That was when my mother really served up a feast, all cooked on a wood stove using food grown and harvested on the farm where we lived. And the ham cured by my dad that was unbelievably good. Also, homemade sausage with spices mixed in just right, both patties and link. This video is really great and genuine reactions to great, country, Southern breakfast food.

I was born and raised in Georgia, so I'm quite used to the typical southern breakfast, but recently traveled to Rome and Firenze, and found the traditional Italian breakfasts delicious and refreshing. Coffee and cornetti with some fruit was just enough to satisfy my morning hunger without weighing me down. Nice change of pace.

The word biscuit comes from the Latin "panis biscoctus," which means "twice baked", so it's no coincidence that a biscuit is similar to biscotti, the cookies that actually are twice baked. Fast forward to the antebellum South. Biscuits were tough and flat, and typically were only eaten only in wealthy homes. Most people living in the South at the time ate cornbread instead. That's because mills in the South were better at grinding corn but not when it comes to wheat. So flour was only something the rich could afford. It wasn't until several 19th-century innovations came along that we got what's now recognized as a Southern biscuit. First, better flour mills, most of them in the Midwest, and increased wheat production dropped the price of flour enough that poor Southerners could also afford to buy flour. And, the development of chemical leavening agents, such as pearl ash (potassium carbonate), potassium bicarbonate, and sodium bicarbonate, what we now call baking soda, helped biscuits reach new heights, without yeast or beaten eggs

Most Italians actually aren't as negative as him on others food. And most actually know even in Italy, recipes vary. This guy visited US and they were calling Italian food from actual Italian immigrant families " not Italian" and truly just so disrespctful My Italian uncle my Aunts husband) cant stand me watching them even as he feels he makes Italians look bad constantly putting down others. There was a particular video where he claimed Italians dont put Garlic in Sauce to which he promptly picked up his cell phone and dialed his Grandma in Italy to have her share the recipe which indeed contains Garlic that is left in. Southern Italian and Northern Italian food varies much line in US we have Southern and Northern recipes that vary. Praising their type of attitude isn't doing anything for them to understand their wrong.

Not sure how famous those biscuits are since this is the first time I’ve heard of the place 😂 But I can confirm based on visits to the South that the best places with Southern cuisine are the small places like this. As they say, it’s the small things that count, and these gems take that to the next level with their charm. And you just proved that cheese really does make everything better! My favorite small places to eat are the diners of New Jersey. Although I was born and raised in NY, my parents are from NJ and my dad would take me on long drives to NJ just to go to the places he grew up eating at. While we did those drives, Nabisco still had a factory in New Jersey (yes, Oreos were once made in New Jersey!) and you could just smell the cookies from the highway which was my favorite part about those drives. NJ is the diner capital of America, and just like these Southern establishments, they too have their own charm. The feeling of going back in time to get a quick bite to eat is why these diners and Southern stalls are so successful.

This place is near impossible to get into for breakfast on weekends because of the tourists that show up by the busload. And it’s actually not small, either. It’s an old, mom and pop motel that’s been turned into a whole complex. The cafe started as a little add-on to the motel and over time just took over. But the food is good and made from scratch. Now, I actually prefer the dinner menu to their breakfast food, and as famous as the biscuits are, compared to others in town I think theirs are…middling. But I love their dinners, those potatoes really are fabulous…I t’s a really great intro to Southern food and a great vibe. And forget the Texan breakfast, steak and eggs. And you have to try the chicken fried steak, the unofficially official dish of Texas (yes, the actual state dish is chili, but let's face it, a good CFS beats the pants off of almost anything.)

I cannot believe it took Alessio 8 years to experience a Southern American breakfast. I had most of my American experiences within the first year of moving here and despite experiencing loads of American things in 25 years I still have so much more to experience.

My tummy was aching after watching you eat all that! I haven’t had Loveless breakfast in years but I remember the feeling after eating all the delicious things there. Cheesy grits are one of my favorites, and yes, I love how they cook the potatoes. Ok, now I gotta drive to Nashville to get some Loveless!

Brought back yummy memories; still recall having a chunk of fried ham in red eye gravy - had to ask the server how they made the gravy. Coffee was poured into the pan which the ham was fried and the chunks were scraped off the pan and then poured over the ham. Glad you were able to experience this cafe.

I love redeye gravy! My Mom used to make it on the weekends when we had Country Ham or Sausage...it was so good! I'd use a butter knife to offset my plate so all of the redeye gravy would stay on the meat, then sop up any leftover gravy with another biscuit. I also loved her fried Corn Dodgers with Molasses and softened butter mixed together, then slathered on the Corn Dodgers...Yum!!!

I'm a New Yorker who lived in Italy and have been all over the US. The US Southern breakfast is a very special thing. Frankly where I lived in Italy, breakfast was non-existent--Coffee, and a fruit or cream filled croissant. Since most of the restaurants and all the shops were closed in the afternoon from noon to 4 o'clock, you had better either eat at home or have food with you while sightseeing. Or collapse from hunger. It required real planning. A full US breakfast (Southern great or even New York pancakes with maple syrup or excellent bagels with lox and cream cheese) is unheard of anywhere in Italy.

After watching hundreds of videos of "Brits try this in America" ,"Italians try that in America",or "Irish eat XYZ in America", I've determined that when Europeans bitch about American food, what they're basically saying is they've either never been here, or only every ate at fast food and/or corporate chains in New England. I never see them complain about the food in a family owned restaurant in the South.

Nashville native here. Born at the old Baptist hospital on church st. Now living north east in Sumner County. You can't go wrong eating at loveless cafe. Some will argue that Cracker Barrel or Waffle House are where it's at but Loveless is #1. Seeing you two enjoy each other over an amazing meal is awesome. Wishing you both many more happy and joyful years together. 💖 p.s some shrimp added to the grits would be heavenly. 😁

I was really surprised that Alessio rated the country ham so low, it has the flavor of prosciutto and is cured in a similar way. I love country ham but rarely eat it because of all the sodium. If I'm at Loveless for lunch or dinner I always get their fried chicken livers. Do they still have their apple butter? That's what I always put on my biscuits when I go there. The first time I went there I was with my cousins on our way back from Nashville and they wanted to go there... after turning off I40 we drove forever to get there, it is worth the drive.

Soak your country ham in warm water for a bit before you cook it. It takes the salt level down. I can’t believe there was no red eye gravy with it! He’d have ranked it higher as much as he loves coffee.

There are recipes for pimento cheese. It is easy to make. I am not a huge fan. I am from the Chicago area and now live in Georgia since 1999. LOVE grits and always have!

@@Linda.Christie I’m with you on pimento cheese. I’ve lived all over the south (all over the world really) but growing up I didn’t really encounter pimento cheese until I lived in Atlanta. It’s a huge thing in Georgia and SC, all through the piedmont area. But it’s a take it or leave it food. Some people love it and always order it when they see it on a menu in one of its many iterations (pimento cheeseburger, pimento grilled cheese, etc etc). Grits are everywhere in the South, and I don’t know a single southerner who doesn’t like them. That said, it’s almost always the version of grits they grew up eating that they love - every other kind of grits is an abomination. I grew up with yellow cornmeal grits cooked in milk with a little butter and cheddar added at the end, but not too much. Some of my friends I grew up with wouldn’t eat grits made that way when they came to my house. And honestly, I didn’t like to eat grits at their house. But I did anyway. Cuz like I said, I’m from the south and you eat what’s put in front of you. Thank goodness most of it is DELICIOUS!

I knew those parks inside out. There used to be a stable at Percy Warner Park by the golf course & that was where first learned to ride. There is also Cheekwood where my favorite exhibit was Christmas Trees from around the world.. After watching your video I may have to think about moving back to Nashville 🥰
