I knew this style of Kungfu from Japanese manga "Kenji". Very detailed and a lot of history in that manga. Pajiquan is one of the most powerful defensive martial art, it's really very underrated unlike wingchun. I heard that Pajiquan was used by Presidential bodyguards at the time.

I'm very happy with this video! Thank you for sharing! The only two things I would like to see more of are 1.) variations on a technique when the sequence doesn't work out and 2.) how to handle a resisting opponent. For example, When trying to execute the throw (~3:30), there are numerous ways to attempt to stop or hinder the throw (getting the elbow behind thrower's shoulder, turning the stance/shifting weight, etc.) and knowing how to handle these situations makes the difference between practice and handling a live opponent. Over my 20 years of martial arts study I've learned that if my technique doesn't work against a real opponent, it's my lack of understanding the technique (when to use it, how to apply it properly, why it's useful, and what comes next). I know you discuss the need to continue, which is important, but it's not good to abandon good basic principles (which, sadly, seems to happen to a lot of fighters once the fight goes in an unexpected direction).

@AnWushuKungFu
@AnWushuKungFu 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sony95, thanks for your question. The simple answer is that the An Family value not only health, combat effectiveness, etc, but also performance: sharing the amazing culture of Chinese Wushu with others! An Shifu has spoken to us many times about the importance of evoking a strong emotional reaction in someone watching when you perform. So, the forms are purposefully practiced in such a way that they will be enjoyable to watch. The jibengong (foundational methods), applications, and other parts of the system, are NOT practiced in this way, so that An Family Wushu is still effective.

Never been a fan of his execution doing Xing Yi forms, because of a few tecnicalities. But, these Baji apps are good. I'll check and see if he has Xing Yi application videos posted, though. Good intensity, just not my flavor in regards to the movement when he's doing XY. Well, I guess that's because of fam/clan differences. Very cool applications. Like the guy below, says: maybe he is a finisher if he fights a Xu Xiaodong type. These are real kung fu applications, not that crusty movie shit you see others doing and getting clobbered for it.
@AnWushuKungFu
@AnWushuKungFu 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, we appreciate it :) Yes, you are right with regards to the Xingyi. In An family system, it can be considered 50/50 external/internal, whereas most modern Xingyi is far more internal than that. We don't have any Xingyi apps up on the channel yet, I don't think, but there are some old Taiji vids if you'd like to see An Shifu performing some softer stuff.
@DG-oo8zf
@DG-oo8zf 4 жыл бұрын
@@AnWushuKungFu XingYi in my family is not soft, its executed very intensely. When my teacher taught Tai Chi , the forms were taught with the flow we see in most Tai Chi schools, but the applications were brutally executed, also. I think he taught Wu family Tai Chi. I dont get why people think that if an art isinternal, it's a substitute for the softest Yoga you can find with very little applications. I appreciate your attention to people's inquiries and will continue to look forward to seeing some applications by that man when it comes to Xing Yi.

There are definitely some similarities between Bajiquan and Xingyiquan and/or Rou Quan, such as Shaolin roots... but that's quite a broad question - hard to answer! As for what to learn, it's hard to say without knowing you, but there are people in their 60's and 70's who start Bajiquan here in Dezhou, China; just with much higher stances, gentler stretching, push-ups against the wall instead of on the concrete, and so on...

It's very hard - probably impossible! - to really pick up the foundations of gongfu via watching videos; the shapes of the movements are (generally) quite simple, and it's the internals that give any form of gongfu its essence... but(!), in terms of building the body, practicing the movements will certainly be helpful, until you can find a teacher :)

We do Taijiquan too ;) The expression on An Shifu's face is due to Bajiquan utilising the spirit in a certain way to produce its characteristic power. Each style is more than a unique collection of movements: there is a spirit and principle to it.

I'll take boxing, muay thai, judo/bjj and greco-roman wrestling over this anyday.. They have withstood the test of time and practical scrutiny. I'm not saying this won't work, just that.. sparring videos with active, resisting opponents from other arts will earn much more for your credibility.
@AnWushuKungFu
@AnWushuKungFu 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right on both forms; though to that point, gongfu that has survived to the current day in its classical form is useful in combat too. Yes, we will have to add more sparring videos, you can see from the comments that a lot of people who watch this video don't realise it's only meant as an example of Baji, not real training in any sense.

@@AnWushuKungFu I don't mean to be disrespectful, but i highly doubt you will be able to use these techniques you've shown here effectively against a competent thai/western boxer... catching a punching arm, forearm to body.. (too much full body commitment required only for low percentage damage/annoyance).. I'm sure there are other useful techniques in wushu (sanda doesn't count).. i'm sorry but i just don't buy this one. I'm not an expert or anything and if I am wrong, please do correct me though. But on a wider scale, i do believe that all martial arts have their uses. The way i see it, these punches and kicks and grappling.. they are all tools and it's the training, conditioning and exposure of the fighter to other styles and fighters, that's the most important of all. The simplest tools are, more often than not, the most useful and enduring of all, because it's the training, the conditioning and mentality that makes a good fighter. Give a sickle to a farmer, he'll use it to farm his land, give it to a warrior and he'll use it to kill the enemy. The biggest problem, as i see, with most martial arts training and especially those of Chinese origins are that you guys are too content within your own styles. Instead of making "demonstration videos" over and over again, why not show it off in the ring or something or against, let's say, a properly trained boxer in an UNSCRIPTED, friendly sparring session or something (i felt the need to bold that letter because people tend to do that so much. They'll pay some guy to represent a certain art or pick/gaud a poorly trained fighter to represent his particular art).. I've mentioned this in my original comment as well. A lot of the times i see Chinese traditional martial artist take to the ring to face boxers/kickboxers/mma, they'll get punch in the face and instantly, their style, reverts to something that somewhat resembles kickboxing or boxing..

@@fela001 Sorry, I thought we replied to this! I absolutely get where you are coming from. An Shifu did in fact have a successful Sanda career, and did use Baji techniques. His opinion is that these techniques are definitely much more difficult to execute than, say, a parry and a punch like you'd see in your examples of boxing/muaythai, but that with a lot of training, it can be done. But, people talking on KZbin is not useful! We will upload more sparring videos, and you are welcome to visit us in Shanghai and see for yourself :)

Bc the motions are supposed to be fast. If you read, the video says "application." He's not gonna stand there and actually hurt the person he's demonstrating with. Bajiquan is explosive fast movements, even if your opponent won't just stand there you will hurt them.
