The amount of cognitive dissonance I experienced watching Part 3 was uniquely high because I grew up in Dallas. I went to that mall. I saw that statue. It felt like I was watching a nightmare I never had. It was a deep sinking feeling of uncomfortable familiarity, and when the camera swings to reveal an AMC elevator I felt the soul leave my body as the only thing I could think was "Oh yeah, that's where I watched Revenge of the Sith. WAIT THAT'S WHERE I WATCHED REVENGE OF THE SITH????" For several minutes after I could no longer tell if it was CG or real, but I soon remembered that the last time I had watched a movie there, it was already getting torn down. I don't think that mall even exists anymore...

So I got my mom to watch The Oldest View Part 2&3. When we got to the part where Wyatt is in the mall and you see it’s Valley View Mall my mom was so confused. She’s old enough to remember going to that mall and had no idea this was all cgi. I waited until the end to tell her that. She was like “wait this doesn’t make sense Valley View is out on 635 why is it here in the middle of nowhere and underground??” I love that Kane used this mall of all malls for this story. I live pretty close to Dallas so that mall isn’t far from me. Or at least where it used to be. It burned down earlier this year. No one knows how or why. So Kane very accurately reconstructed a mall that no longer exists. My mom even commented on how accurate it is after telling her it was CGI.

When he was running across the edge of the ceiling he looked back and there were more horse bodies around the giant
@batracio1415 Жыл бұрын
@@EliasPluto No clues on what the horses could mean. We have an idea of the plants and that stuff, since it relates to the botanist concept, but nothing related to horses. Maybe the dead animals (i think there was more than just horses, though i might be wrong Edit: I was wrong, they're all horses lmao) are meant to show how Wyatt, in spite of his human spirit and will to survive, is, in that situation, no different than a defenseless animal, like a horse, cow, etc.. Maybe that's how the Giant views him, as an unnecessarily greedy individual, that poked the sleeping bear many times in spite of it's numerous warnings and is now paying the consequences. The carcasses might also be there to contrast with the lifeless aesthetic of the mall i guess. Also i love how the video slowly progresses into a big: "I'm not trapped in here with you.. you are trapped in here with me" moment from the Giant, it just feels soo dreadful all the way through, i love it, absolutely love it.

It could have gotten him on the escalator the first time he went on it. It was toying with him so much

Just realized that in the beginning of Part 3, Wyatt mentions that he got his trail cameras from his old Botany professor. So he had been interested in the field of Botany at some point before changing to Business. It's ironic in some way since the Rolling Giant is literally based off of a French Botanist. Also, love the accuracy of Texas tree species spotted when Wyatt was looking at the blueprints.

The fact the the Rolling Giant is a real statue makes this masterpiece of liminal horror 10 times worse. The "tower of babbel/arrogance of man" thing in horror is something that I've thought about a lot, but specifically how it relates to the audience. I wouldn't consider myself a horror fan, but I consume a lot of horror. Hell, I'm even here watching this video. Why is that? I think it's the same reason Wyatt goes down those steps: We need to know. We need to confront those fears. We need to figure out the mystery. Made in Abyss is an excellent example of this. There's a hole that's filled with monsters that will literally kill you if you try to leave, and yet, people go in willingly. Why? Because it is "the earth's last great mystery." Because they need to know what's at the bottom. It is a horrific and grisly show, but I keep watching. Because *I* need to know what's at the bottom too.

Genuine question, does anyone else get incredibly sad by abandoned malls? Like yeah there's the liminal horror and weird uncanny vibe but... idk it breaks my heart. A place that was once so full of life and joy... I'm a 90's kid, so I saw kinda the tail end of the mall's popularity and personally, I loved it! Seeing abandoned malls on tiktok and stuff absolutely breaks my heart 😔😭

@@yakub9933 oh ffs I didn't say I can't handle change, I said it makes me sad. Logically I know it's not the primary method of shopping now and it was bound to fall out of fashion. I can still be sad about it.

the mall near where i live is still somewhat alive, not nearly to the extent it once was but i suppose because i live in an area full of old people terrified of change that it's simply avoided the death most malls have, which is one of the few things i actually like about where i live. i was born in the early 2000's so i never saw malls at their peak but ive always thought they were really neat.
@Dieci-9 Жыл бұрын
Same. Even worse seeing dying malls, especially ones you used to go in as a kid and now you pass through them and seeing missing stores and knowing that if things keep going like that it's all going downhill from there is just so sad.

The one in my home town was demolished but the big city right across the river has 3 that are alive and well. I think it they thought it would be more sustainable and popular wherever they built one.

If I was at the junction, and it still went down, I'd have gotten out immediately. Wouldn't have gone in, in the first place, but when stairs lead down into the earth, seemingly over a mile long, in the middle of nowhere, in a place that still has enough electricity to run lightbulbs.. The dude deserved to get got. Tbh

Imo, this "Rolling Giant" monster, looks so studiply comical, like a really bad Halloween monster decoration you put in your front lawn. *BUT* it is the atmosphere, the questions that make it so fking terrifying and horrible. I-i love it, this video makes my tummy hurt.

I was actually terrified during the whole thing, but when Julian used escalator, tension went out in an instant, i was rolling in a gigant burst of laughter (no pun intended)
@uniquename6925 Жыл бұрын
The rolling giant gets much scarier when you realize that it's a real thing. It wasn't created for this series. It's just a thing that was in ab abondened mall for years.

@TrollgymousNico When he was SLOWLY ascending up the escalator looking right at the camera the entire time, it felt like "Yeah. That’s right. You know what’s coming. Thought I couldn’t make it up here? Well, watch *THIS."* It was so morbidly hilarious.
@Nicotrie Жыл бұрын
@@rosesongoku6980 That's the thing about this, Julian might appear inhumanly scary, but closer to the end, it feels as if he is just trolling Wyatt at this point, that "You gotta be fricking kidding me" from him felt as if he would have genuinely laughed at this sight if he wasn't on receiving end I think Mr. The oldest view, Trolling gigant is powerhouse of a character, i like everything about it.
@rosesongoku6980 Жыл бұрын
@@Nicotrie You perfectly described the scene and both those guys' perspectives. I’d have lost it too just seeing Julien taking an escalator like it’s the end of a work day. He’s got so much character and the ambiguity helps. I agree, I like everything about him as well, the guy is 100% a troll.

A lot of that rolling giant video is completely indistinguishable from real footage. I was skipping around trying to find the spooky guy and had no idea it was CG for a few minutes. Absolutely phenomenal work from Kane.
