Thanks again. Getting ready to order it. As of now I have the regular AS reissue, an Impulse re-issue from 25 years or so ago, and a UK pressing from the 80s. And thanks for the update on your system, as I find comparisons on so-so equipment not to be reliable, especially as too many KZbin reviewers have systems I find wanting.

Better hurry, only 5000 were pressed and over half were preordered.

Hi Kenny, great take on this beautiful record (one of my fav. Coltrane Album). Ballads is often criticized as too easy and as too much of a compromise between Coltrane and Impulse! With Ballads he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman (on John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman) and with Duke Ellington (on Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). I used to own many different versions in the past 40+ years, including also the "old" (1998) MFSL Gold CD , probably the best digital version available, but i think this album should be enjoyed in full "analogue" way. I am really happy to own the AS 33rpm Version which is really excellent. Now: if money is not an issue i would probably buy an OG, or a very early pressing in near mint condition; but : good luck finding the RIGHT ONE ! .... Best regards from Switzerland

Kenny. Thanks for the great video. My UHQR of Ballads is in the mail. It sounds like you have a 1965 repress of the album with AS-32A Stereo LS Van Gelder on side A and AS-32B Stereo LS Van Gelder on side B. (The first pressing was 1963.) You didn't mention the LS, but that's what I could find on Discogs. Cheers.
@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews9 ай бұрын
I did not see LS on my copy but I think that you are correct, my version is probably from the mid 60s from what I see on Discogs. Thank you very much for the information, I really appreciate it 😊.

Kenny awesome comparison on Ballads I just spun my UHQR it sounds stunning McCoy’ piano work sounds so intimate and refreshing the soundstage is more open on the UHQR.

Hi Kenny, I've got the first French version in mono and it's stunning in bright sounds and bass. Ballads is to my ears a great Coltrane record and i agree A love supreme is the better one. Thanks for the great videos. Greetings from Holland. Randy

Hey Kenny. Thank you. I appreciate your take on these different pressings. My set up is nice enough to discern the difference between them, but after buying the 33rpm Acoustech versions of both “A Love Supreme” and “Ballads”, plus already having ones from the 70’s, I’m all set. I fully understand why people want the 2xLP’s @45rpm UHQR’s, especially if you’re looking for every last little bit of detail in those grooves, but as collectors, we can become obsessive..lol. I know I have been in the past. Of course, we often seek out the best sounding versions to us, but we’ve gotta know when to say when, imo., but that can oftentimes be easier said than done. I can imagine that if one is extremely wealthy and money is no object, how that could take some of the fun out of collecting. I think it’d likely become boring, as the thrill of tracking down that particular record is half the fun to me at least. Thanks again, Kenny.

Thanks so much for the illuminating comparisons! That is one of my favorite Impulse! Coltrane records, and it often seems to get overlooked in favor of his more adventurous, "boundary-pushing" music. I have a 1995 GRP pressing (MASTERED BY CAPITOL - Wally) and I wonder how it would compare to the Acoustic Sounds Verve Series. I may have to spring for that one. Are you familiar with singer Karrin Allyson's heartfelt tribute version from 2001 (with James Williams, John Pattitucci and Lewis Nash), "Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane?" It captures the feel of the original beautifully...

Hey Kenny, another great video. 'Ballads' is a cool if not particularly innovative Coltrane album. Before getting the Acoustic Sounds release I was pretty satisfied with a clean Japanese pressing. I don't understand what Analogue Productions is up to any more, and unless they release something spectacular like 'Electric Ladyland' I'm pretty much done wth UHQRs. Let's face it: not EVERYTHNG needs this kind of archival care and gratuitous packaging...

Hi Kenny Do you think both Coltrane UHQR’s have about the same level of sonic difference compared to the AS 33 ?
@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews9 ай бұрын
Im not sure if I totally understand your question but on my system the UHQR versions sound better than the AS 33s with the Love Supreme UHQR sounding a little bit better.
@Fatdogrecords9 ай бұрын
yeah cheers Kenny. I was just wondering if one of the UHQR’s sounded like a bigger step up than the other. Compared to its respective AS33. As I’ve heard the love supreme is probably the bigger difference
