Tal Memorial (Rapid) (2018), Moscow RUS, rd 8, Mar-04
Sicilian Defense: Nezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack. Fianchetto Variation (B31)
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6 4. Bc6 dc6 5. d3 Bg7 6. h3 Nf6 7. Nc3 O-O 8. Be3 b6 9. Qd2 e5 10. Bh6 Qd6 11. O-O-O a5 12. g4 a4 13. Kb1 Be6 14. Ne2 b5 15. Ng3 Rfd8 16. Bg7 Kg7 17. Qg5 Nd7 18. Coming into the final day of the Tal Memorial , Indian GM Vishwanathan Anand shared the lead along with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov with 4 points out of a possible. Two players: Kramnik and Grischuk were close behind on with 3.5/6.
But Anand won a way to keep his head and grab the title with some solid chess. A win against against Hikaru Nakamura in the sixth round had got Anand back in and he continued his good run on the final day with a vital win over Alexander Grischuk in the eighth round.
As luck would have it, Mamedyarov lost to Daniil Dubov in the 8th round as well and that is all that was needed to decide the title.
Anand had only one loss in the tournament - losing to Mamedyarov in the third round. But he also racked up four outright wins and that is big for a tournament in which the average rating was 2757.
The Candidates tournament is about to begin in a week, yet four of them are playing here: Kramnik, Karjakin, Mamedyarov and Grischuk. The win comes soon after Anand’s World Rapid title and will give his confidence another big boost.
The Tal Memorial Rapid is a 10-player single round-robin taking place in the Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow. The ten top players were competing for a $130,000 prize fund, with $25,000 for 1st place.

Han Talk played complicated ones which required quite a bit of very accurate defence, and too much initiative. This usually resulted in too much time being wasted from the people he faced. One mistake and Talk gained the upper hand. Even in this tournament looks at how Dubov crushed Nakamura like Tal.

Han Boetes it maybe speculative but Tal's game was more psychological than accurate. He forces opponents to play bad moves out of fear to be in the end of a Tal brilliancy. Anyone can do correct sacrifices but it takes balls and heart to do what Tal did esp. at the highest level of the game

Like the way Anand discusses with Grischuk after the game.He plays so well even at this age!.Anand is a modest and warm hearted person. He is such a natural chess genius and has so many achievements (including 5 WC titles),yet he is very humble. He always talks to his opponents and is never the boasting kind.I haven't come across any chess player who dislikes him personally. He is respected by everyone. He is a good role model for young chess players everywhere.A true chess legend and fine human being.

Hey Agad, congratulations on your fantastic (and meteoric) success as a chess youtuber, well deserved! I've seen the final minute of this game, in the article devoted on chess.com to Anand's victory, and the images are absolutely unbelieable, Grischuk thinks, plays Rg8, Anand replies Kf5+ almost instantly, boom, Grischuk nods in shock, takes, and BOOM, Anand Rxf7+, Grischuk's shock multiplies ten times the previous one, but in a couple of seconds he sees the sequence to mate and pure desolation invades his face, he spends half a minute nodding, absorbing the injury before he proceeds, graciously in defeat, to carry the game to the bitter end... That minute is pure gold, so I thought I'd share my impressions on it. Best regards.
