also, Mel does look away (cut to shot of Mel looking to the side, away from LD) when the 'no presents' thing came up. I thinks this makes sense. I think Mel enjoys gift giving as a social ritual. It's a way of saying what words cannot (and it's easier for you when you have money). LD is bad at giving presents. For Ted's birthday, he got that shirt with the hole in it... LD doesn't like being unappreciated so it's actually to his benefit to squirm out of the obligation. LD being the screen version of Larry David Poor LD, he gets no respect.
