Hey Andertons, a little suggestion for a video, what about a consistency showdown? Let's compare 2 or 3 same models of guitar from different manufacturers to see if there are differences and inconsistencies between them. For example two 50's les pauls, two 57 strats, 2 d35 martin etc. And let's see if you have the guarantee that when you order a certain guitar it sounds as good as any other one from the same batch

Watched this video a few times. I noticed this time Pete said concerning the Dirty Little Secret that all pedals should start at 12 o'clock. Wrong again! Howard from Catalinbread set up the eq just like a real Marshall Super Lead and Super Bass. You need to turn up the treble and mids and turn down the bass which Lee never did. Just ask Robin Trower. He dimes the treble and mids and turns the bass all the way off. Pete also said it doesn't sound like a Plexi. Wrong once again. I'm 65 years old and have been playing Marshalls and Fenders all my life since I was a child. The DLS is the most realistic Plexi on this board. You need to dial it in and also adjust the presence inside the pedal. I will say the Glove is awesome for the price. I love Lee and Pete's videos. They are a lot of fun and very entertaining and informative. I think they just should have done some research on these pedals first. They also missed the mark with the JHS Charlie Brown. It's not meant to be as high gain as the rest. It's based an an early 1960's JTM 45 which is much lower gain.

A suggestion, as a reference it would be great to have a cranked Plexi reissue (attenuated as necessary) which you could switch to-and-fro between the clean amp and see how close the pedals sound to the amp they're trying to sound like, as well as comparing the pedals. Enjoyable video none the less though :)
@sercastamere9853 Жыл бұрын
The pedals will get a different amp closish to the plexi sound and will give you a good sound on their own, so live it will do just fine. But as far as getting close to the original? Not even. The original sound is also a 4x12 cab with certain speakers in it and the volume, then put thru mics and attenuated in a sense on the final track balanced with all the other elements of a song. However, if you have a Marsall or similar amp already with these pedals they will perform much better.

18:53 as a "stoner, doomy" kind of player, I just ordered the Catalinbread because of this demo 😁. Also, it's designed to have the same tone stack as a Super Lead, meaning it sounds best with the bass all the way down (the EQ knobs are cut only).

Ultimately what I have taken from these Andertons shootouts is that pretty much all the pedals will sound good in isolation, hence so many pedals being loved and on so many boards however it seems that you should never have to spend over £100/€115/$125US/$185aus to get a really great pedal of any effect. Its also taught me, if in doubt...Boss or EHX

Great video as always. One thing I really wished you had done was turn down the tone just a bit on the Golden Plexi - whenever Lee turned it on I just wanted to reach through my screen and twist that tone just a tad ha 😄 It's just such a bright pedal, but with the tone turned down a bit (and maybe gain slightly below 9 O' clock for the sake of this video) it sound so much better and way more like an actual Plexi.
@WillfulThinker3 жыл бұрын
OMG yes. That was frustrating the hell out of me. I was shouting at my computer screen, "Turn down the f'ing tone and gain on the Golden Plexi!!!" I think Cap made a great point, the glove does a very nice plexi sound on that one setting. I'm sure it has some other tones too, but it won with that one setting. However the strymon was nearly identical, especially with the push switch on, AND it has a bunch more knobs and switches and will likely have more good tones available. So if you think of the glove as a "stripped down" version of the strymon then it's actually priced about right. And since most people will really only use one setting on a pedal (who has time to change pedal settings at a gig?) the glove makes a lot of sense for live playing, and the strymon would be a better studio option in a rack. The other reasoning is that if you accidentally bump that strymon on stage you could be spending minutes resetting it, but the glove only has a couple of knobs.

I felt they didn't represent that pedal well at all. It needs some tweaking and it's mostly designed as an amp in a box in which you run other pedals. I know this is a week old, but here's my thought: I hate pedals that you have to break the thing open and operate like a surgeon just to get a sound out of it. I feel that these pedals were represented fairly in this shootout because you only adjust settings that are actually available while playing. The designs are flawed. If the Catalinbread (for example) is not "designed" to sound good with it's knobs at noon, then it needs to be designed better. What's the point of having a knob if it's not useful? What's the point of having an internal switch you can't access when you need it? FYI I'm not angry or anything, but it is annoying when things are harder than they need to be.

The Catalinbread, and the JHS are my favorites... and Pete didn't want anything to do with them. Interesting how that turned out. The mid control on the JHS and Cat was the wrench in the gear. Mid's were taking the tone away that was expected and fattening it past the desire.

I think I actually liked the Wampler best, and maybe the Xotic second, though I would have to hear more of the DIP switch settings to decide between them. Great video guys. EHX Glove - wow ! Great value
@cloudshad0ws3 жыл бұрын
Did you guys flip the internal switch in the EHX Glove to change the internal voltage to 18v? Makes it sound better IMO, and you still only need 9v power source. Love that pedal.
@slawsonscot3 жыл бұрын
How does that work when it’s still only drawing 9v? Excuse my ignorance :) I’ve got one so I’m curious.
@cloudshad0ws3 жыл бұрын
@@slawsonscot Capacitors probably? I'm not an electrical engineer, but I believe it's something called a "charge pump." Capacitors store energy, so just because the input into the system is 9v, doesn't mean that voltage stays at 9v throughout the entire circuit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_pump

Thanks for this guys.! I've been undecided whether to buy a Strymon Riverside and/ or Sunset, versus a good Distortion and or Overdrive to use with my MXR Noise Gate and IRIDIUM. Your videos featuring the Sunset & Riverside made me decide on adding an East River and Glove, Electro Harmonix pairing potentially to stack. I have Strymon's Compadre (for boost/compression) the Flint (Reverb and Tremelo) already, they're first rate. So, you've saved me a lot of money and boosted my confidence as to making a decision. first rate, thanks again!

I love this channel, I love this guys, I love this blind comparissons BUT using a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret with conventional voltage (9V) and maybe (I;m not sure) and without adjusting the internal trimpot to match the amps presence was really really unfair to this pedal.

and the EHX also comes with a cool 9v battery inside!

I've owned 4 of these pedals. The Glove is still quite good. Also, the Dirty Little Secret has a dip switch too. You should try the DLS in the FX loop like a preamp.

I think emotional connection plays a role here, like it did with Bea. We all know the boss tones. They are ingrained in our emotional memories. As to these pedals, i too think the cheaper pedal captures a plexiglass tone really, really well...

And btw the Charlie Brown is more a Marshall JTM 45 style pedal
@mariodriessen97403 жыл бұрын
@KarzaBarza : I liked that one more than I thought I would. Most Marshall in a box style pedals have waaaaay too much gain. Off course you can dial it back a little, but even then it's too much for me sometimes. Like the Suhr Riot Mini for instance. Even with the distortion off there's too much distortion. I have the Xotic SL Drive and I love it, but I never go further than 4 o clock. And that's for the heaviest parts. Most of the older Marshall amps I played didn't have that much gain, even when cranked.

Very interesting! I'm annoyed the Carl Martin Purple Plexi wasn't included. To me, this type of OD needs a little crispy sizzle in the top end...

Choose a different amp and it's a whole new ball game! I actually thought the Charlie Brown was the most "amp-like", for lack of a better word, but also had the least gain, so perhaps best mixed with another drive pedal or into an already dirty amp. The Strymon was really great, which I don't think would surprise anyone. The EHX was quite a nice surprise. These blindfold challenges are always fun and revealing :-)

Glove all the way, for the money, you can’t beat it.
@Mister_Greg3 жыл бұрын
The winner: Friedman Smallbox! Some pretty serious gain hangover. You might want to revisit an actual plexi. Along these lines the Charlie Brown was designed to sound like a nicely dialed JTM45. Stack an overdrive in front and you will get what you’re looking for. I will concede that it falls short of the gain of a nicely dialed SLP-100, if only by a little. To me the (digital!) Strymon is the winner of the bunch, though it was sounding quite anemic until that switch was toggled. The treble, still needed to be rolled back, IMO. For me the Wampler came in second. The gain of the Golden Plexi is a joke. It never stood a chance dialed at noon. Starting at 8 o’clock would have been kinder. Tone control is a shelf at 100Hz. Take it back to 10:30 and roll the volume up. This is a clone of the Carl Martin PlexiTone, which itself is a high gain beast. Asymmetrical LED clipping can be harsh but it’s in the feedback loop which is good. The huge difference between this clone and the real deal is the power section. The Carl Martin is very quiet even as the gain is rolled up. That is the drawback of the Tone City but seriously exacerbated by the gain control. What’s more is at noon the pedal is just about fully saturated. After that it starts to feel even more compressed and gets darker because the cap in the feedback loop begins working at audible frequencies. I imagine this was by design. I’ve modded my GP to give a reasonable amount of gain. A large improvement but it doesn’t take the pedal out of the budget category. I’m not about to modify my Carl Martin. DLS is supposed to be a JCM800 but doesn’t do a very good job, IMO. After some tonal tweaking the EHX sounded really good. I didn’t think it even sounded like an MIAB at first. Too much in the low mids. SL Drive demos never impressed me but you guys are doing it justice and have changed my mind. So my order last to first: DLS GP SL EHX JHS Wampler Strymon With a big gap between the DLS and the SL. I made allowances for the switches on the Wampler that were not being used. Otherwise it would have dropped below the EHX. Maybe this isn’t fair since this wasn’t done for any of the other pedals with switches save for the Strymon at the end. Some other notable pedals: MI Super Crunch Box set to lo gain, Bogner La Grange, AMT M-Drive and the Boss Power Stack. And the low gain side of the full-sized Carl Martin Plexi Tone.
