For quick comparisons of the higher (usable) gain tones of each amp, and rabea's best riffs: Peavey 6505 10:50 EVH 5150 18:10 Dark Terror 25:15 Kraken 34:20

Kraken sounds a lot warmer and organic, but for me, considering the pure gain sounds, versatility and price, the 6505 does it. Please watch the video again at these points for a better comparison!

...wow mate thx for the time stamps, makes the comparison a lot faster and easier. It´s a shame MESA stuff is waay too expensive on this side of the pond so "Mini Rectifier" and "Mark V 25W" couldn´t make it into this comparison. I wonder how they would have compared to those 4 amps.
@jmcsquared186 жыл бұрын
Pedro Andrade I agree. The 6505 is the best for modern progressive metal, but the Kraken is definitely the most organic. It had a nice analog-like breakup at medium-low gain but still sounded good at very high gain. Also: why does the 5150 sound so mid-rangy compared to the 6505? It has a ton of pokiness to its tone for some reason. Maybe it's s a difference in the power valves...

There is just something about a high gain amp with low to moderate gain dialled in that just sounds great to my ears. Even if you don't intend to crank the gain, try the high gain amps. The way they're voiced might work for you even if the tones you go for are not meant for metal.

If I recall correctly, the 5150 LBX, the 6505+ mini and the Dark Terror all use EL84s which are cheap and produce like 20W. While the Kraken uses the more expensive 6L6GBs/5880s that produce 40-50W. That extra wattage comes at a price because of the need of bigger transformers and so on.

The VX Kraken has to be the best rock/metal amplifier under £1000. So versatile, I'm even asked to turn down often at gigs because of how loud it is, louder than most 100watt heads. The Peavey 6505 MH however is a good amp.. For all of two weeks. I had two in a month from andertons, later finding out that Peavey put a temperature sensor on the valves, so when you run it around half volume for an hour, the thing overheats and shuts down :/. Weird considering hi gain amps are guaranteed to heat up! This issue may have been resolved, just don't want people to waste their time over a fault. Great video as always guys :)

I was a teenager during the 70's and could hear what Peter mentioned as that "classic" sound in the Orange amp.(I tend to be "hung up on that tone to a certain degree). I recently snagged a Carvin V3M for 450USD used through a Craigslist deal. It is most definitely my favorite amp head since having owned a JCM900. Besides being more portable and having a clean channel, I really like that it doesn't have stupid amounts of gain, despite playing a lot of extreme metal. It's also packing 50 watts on the highest wattage switch, which is a lot for a mini-tube head. It's definitely able to gig small venues at high volumes without a mic on the cab. The kicker about this amp is it has two identical gain channels, so you could tweak both channels to be different or use the other as a boost for playing guitar solos. Speaking of boost, it also has a boost switch that's accessible through the footswitch. It can be adjusted from 0-10, meaning you'll either barely hear the difference or your ears will bleed upon the massive volume change. The clean channel isn't particularly impressive on its own if you're into Fender amps for that clean sound. I use an EQ pedal to help resolve that issue by adding somewhere between 0 and 3 db on the higher frequencies and cut around 1 db on the lower. The Carvin V3M is an amazing amp for the buck, even brand new (700USD IIRC)! Pro tip: if you're not prepared to spend quite some time tweaking an amp to your liking, you will probably not like the Carvin.

The Kraken is great as it's a gigging amp and I actually think it's just about worth the asking price but for me, my vote goes to the Chinese Peavey 6505. It does everything I personally need and the price is pretty good. It def edged the 5150 III for features and I just don't like Orange fizz (I had a JR Dark Terror and sold it after a week). Shame the Laney IRT Studio wasn't included as it's a great amp. Only thing I can fault on it is, the boost is garbage (use a OD) and it's doesn't quite have enough gain without a pedal...

I like the Thickness of the Kraken. Higher wattage gives it the advantage here and I wouldn’t put it in the same class as the others. This video doesn’t do the 5150III justice but it’s overpriced. Peavey is the most versatile and complete of these amps for home practice and mic’d gigs. It’s not as thick as it’s big brother but it’s kick ass.

I was surprised that the 5150 III was the one I liked the least. That Peavey blew me away! Totally gonna get it for the studio. That Victory amp is great and incredibly natural-sounding. The "clean" sound I really like because it reminds me of clean low wattage valve amps that crack up when they are full volume. Orange is Orange and will always have the Orange sound (I own 2; mega happy). Nice Strat sound out of that Peavey, still amazed by it!!!

The EVH employs 0.0047 coupling caps vs 0.021 (typical soldano) for the first two gain stages. It means it'll be super tight vs the more bloated peavey. And it also means it'll sound super thing and raspy with single coils and just right with hi gain humbuckers. You can hear precision and cleanliness under gain. It also uses a 18K to get some saturation in the sound vs the 39K again, typical soldano value for the peavey. It can sound a bit shrill but at the same time look how much the gain resolves along with the tone controls vs the other amps. It pretty much shames all the others (kraken included) if you are going to use it for super hi gain with humbuckers. Well done for me. It also doesn't look cheap despite the simplicity. By the way the PRS MT 15 should be a good rival but a different thicker sounding amp, a proper clean channel, a lot of hum and problems with noise floors and design errors etc...

The tightest sounding of the four is the 5150 LBX and the loosest one is Dark Terror. The Peavey seems to be right in the middle as far as Tone. I love the sound of all the amps. Suggestion for a shootout. Some pedals sound great with some amps but rubbish with others. Some pedals sound great with all amps. It makes pedal shopping a bit hit & miss. A "versatile pedal shootout" maybe an editors nightmare but it may generate some sales.

That Peavey sounds fucking brilliant on the lead channel. It's very good value for money too and has a heap of features. I reckon I'd be pretty happy owning it.

realise this is a pretty old video :) but just thought i'd mention i bought the 6505 MH, not because it's neccessarily the "best" sounding amp but because out of these lunchbox amps it is the most versatile AND crucially allows me to use the amp with Headphones and without connecting to a cab, with a DI out aswell, also it has reverb and it has a FX loop and 2 channels, pretty damn good, the only other amps that really compete are from Blackstar st.james and they are much more expensive.
