11:35 - Her ability to go back and forth from cleans to harsh vocals from one word to the next stands out to me. It not only seems difficult to do well skillwise, but also challenging to do in a safe way for your vocal health. Very cool displays of her work in this one-take.

A lot of harsh singers can do that but she's incredibly good and quick at it. I don't understand how the verson she's doing live didn't end up on the record. It's only really quiet backings on there.

shifting from growl to clean vocals from one word to the other is not that hard, once you can properly perform the technique. What she does and IS very hard and very impressive is removing the distortion for only a syllable here and there mid scream, and mixing pitch into the distortion.

Courtney is one of the few chosen female band lead singer who can sing and growl without pause between them... you should check also the band Jinjer, the singer, Tatiana Schmailuk is for me, the best in the genre and totally incredible. She can sing anything from jazz, reagge, pop, metal and growls deeper and harder than a dude... check for example "Pit of Conciousness" live in Kiev... you'll be surprised...

Courtney is a badass, and she’s one of the best in the business right now. Spiritbox just got nominated for a Grammy for their song Jaded, which is definitely worth a look. They really took off with their song Holy Roller, though my personal favorite is Sun Killer. If you want another female fronted metal band, Conquer Divide is another great one. They’ve been doing a lot of good work this year.

I've had the same thoughts as you on her tone, it fascinates me and is quite unique. For me I think it's her distinct and clear pronunciation of the words in the lyrics, it's ethereal yet each syllable is crisp, clear, and polished. Whatever it is she has a voice that I simply cannot get enough of. Great reaction, I enjoyed your perspective and insight.

The crazy thing is she DOESN'T do the vocal gymnastics at the end on the album version of this song. Its all clean. That actually makes this one take BETTER than the actual recorded version imo. I like when this band baits you into one thing and gives you another. "Blessed Be" is a legit pop song until they smash you with a sledgehammer halfway through lol. My favorite vocal performance of the year is probably from my favorite overall vocalist Daniel Tompkins from Tesseract with the song "Legion"...the vocal gymnastics on that song are out of this world

This is a good introduction song to Spiritbox because I think it's quite catchy, but I actually prefer their sound from back when they first started. Their music was more progressive and complex compared to the stuff they are making right now, which everyone seems to focus on. If you want to see a style of metal you maybe haven't before, they have several live videos for songs like Rule of Nines, The Beauty of Suffering, Belcarra, and The Mara Effect...though that last one is a three part song and pretty long. Worth it, though! I also can't help but wonder if you've heard of Jinjer. They're another female fronted metal band, from Ukraine, and they have a performance of Pisces that is a very popular reaction video. Don't want to tell you why, but Tatiana is just as badass as Courtney and you'll like her too.

It's worth mentioning that their bassist Josh is also a very good singer himself (he was previously the bassist and clean vocalist in a band called As I Lay Dying), and he does sing alongside Courtney a lot during live shows. Got to see them live this year and they were amazing!! Another female fronted metal band to check out would be Jinjer (like Ginger) and their front woman Tatiana. Like Courtney, Tati is a metal goddess that can switch between clean and harsh vocals from one word to the next. Pisces, Perennial (Live at Wacken 2019), Judgment & Punishment (One Take Vocal) are some good ones to start with.

There are several types of gutturals, well-executed gutturals (like any technique) do not harm your voice. If you want to see other Live Performance of her: - Spiritbox - Blessed Be | LIVE Performance | Next Wave Virtual Concert Series | SiriusXM this was in quarantine, it is one of the songs I sing, on KZbin there is the entire live concert in parts - Spiritbox - Rule of Nines - Courtney LaPlante live one take performance

One reason why her vocals are amazing is that she's breathy. Apparently it's not easy to sing breathy, and she's amazing at it. Also, she has vocal tone in her harsh vocals. Which is also apparently super hard to do. There are a few vocal coaches who have done reactions to this video. I highly recommend checking them out 😊

One thing that interests me about her voice. For example, in the first verse on the line "if there's no heat", she appears to inhale and voice the word "if" through her inhalation. I'm not sure if it's just that she actually does inhale and voice her inhalation, or if she just gives the impression that it is an inhalation, but it is a very interesting recurring feature of her soft vocals.
@thedappermagician6905
@thedappermagician6905 Жыл бұрын
Not much to say that others haven't but perhaps the word you're looking for to describe her deeper aspect of her voice is "husky". It allows her to have alot of texture in each of her breaths without making it so deep that she can't get light and fluttery.

The mix of dynastic range, rhythm, and memorable melody are chefs kiss. Add lyrical content and you can appeal to a wide range of listeners. To point out one detail to touch on the guitar note selection and Courtney’s vocal notes match well because Courtney and Mike(Lead Guitar) are married and compose all the music and lyrics for the band. If you check out more from them notice how Mike compose complementary music to her vocals.

Courtney and Spiritbox are awesome and I discovered them at about the same time as the Ukrainian metal band Jinjer. I've been a musician since I was a kid (MANY years ago!) and I've been in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal music with harsh vocals until I discovered Spiritbox and Jinjer. I instantly loved both bands because of their sophisticated and diverse songwriting, excellent musicianship and the incredible vocals of Courtney and Tatiana from Jinjer. HEY READ THIS COMMENT!!! You at some point HAVE TO have to HAAAAAVE TO react to Spiritbox - The Mara Effect LIVE at Silverside Sound. It is a MUST. I’m not even kidding when I say I named my cat after part 3 of that song, but specifically the live recording. Before that, I would recommend Ultraviolet, Rule of Nines live one take performance, the ENTIRE album Eternal Blue start to finish. If you’re not ready to commit to reacting to the whole debut album, the title track Eternal Blue would probably be a great option to start with. Incredible vocals, incredible lyrics. Off that same album there are two songs that are equally heavy, but in a polarizing way: Holy Roller (sonically aka heavy metal) and Constance (Look up the story behind the song and watch the music video for both. Okay. I’m a Spiritbox stan. But they are just THAT GOOD. Top notch song writing.

Here is some constructive criticism. You only need to pause the video once and that's halfway through it to give some input for maybe like 30 seconds. Then after the video is done give your final thoughts all you want. We don't necessarily care about your many different opinions about these singers and what you may know when the video is playing. A reaction video also doesn't really mean to keep talking through it. Short and sweet is enough.

No, this is not screamo. Just because there are harsh vocals doesn't make something screamo. Screamo is, as the name implies, a genre that blends emo music with screaming vocals that became popular in the early 2000s. So popular in fact, that word became a derogatory word used by people who didn't know what they were talking about to sh*t on any kind of extreme subgenre. To avoid offending anyone and coming across as ignorant, I suggest you just call this screams, harsh vocals or growls and only talk about specific subgenres once you know more about this type of music. For the record, I know you didn't use screamo in a derogatory way, since you obviously enjoyed the song, but I'm warning you because some metalheads both online and in real life have a very low tolerance for it.

Honestly, this type of singing in metal i feel has just matured a lot. I used to really dislike any type of screaming, until i came across bands that used it in what i considered tasteful and meaningful ways. To me, the "vibe" is more important than almost anything else in music, but maybe that's cause i grew up on psychedelic rock, jazz and blues-rock ^^

Courtney can do it all. She can calm you down and sing you to sleep, but she can also wake you up and terrify you at the same time. She is very good at emoting through her vocal technique and her breath control is top tier.
