In a recent episode of Brilliant Idiots, Andrew Schulz argues that the recent growth of women's college basketball is partly due to the influx of more skilled and attractive players. What a great topic! Check out the full conversation titled In Total Surrender

I had a HUMONGOUS CRUSH on Sue Bird growing up. I thought she was SO BEAUTIFUL!! I remember running into her, Diana T and Swinn Cash, at the Bloomfield mall in CT back in 2001. Sue was just as beautiful in person. I remember saying, "I love you, Sue!!", and then her turning around and blowing me a kiss! Then all three of them turned away and giggled like school girls as I stood there in shock that she even acknowledged my "cat call". That made my day, and made me forever love Sue Bird (to this day) ❤

Yes and no. Women's gymnastics is a super athletic, super power but because it has as much grace and elegance as explosiveness NO ONE wants to watch men do it. Everyone watches and admires the women who do it. It changes from sport to sport, with football being at one extreme and women's gymnastics at the other, track and field sort of in the middle. Basketball is 2nd to football but the Curry Revolution changed everything in a way that it opened the door for much easier female imitation.

Attractive women have always been in the league, folks just didnt care. If interest was just about that then the lingerie football league would've taken off. The Caitlin Clark effect + the way women's college bball has been able to capitalize off 4 year athletes and market individual players through NIL has had more impact than anything else. Now when they get to the WNBA we are already familiar with them, have seen them play, and have rooting interest, similar to the Magic/Bird effect in the NBA.

Ive always been a huge WNBA fan since the 90s Comets. There is absolutely a shift in the marketing department. Respect to Griner and Taurasi but their is an opportunity here to increase the revenue with the Clark wave and whoever is running the show understand the assignment. What is one thing that all men and women want to look at......GOOD LOOKING YOUNG WOMEN. The young player from Uconn who went to the Storm has not played a second but ESPN and WNBA IG profiles post her often. She is cute and will bring more attention. its crazy but its a good business decision.

As much as I do not like Jason Whitlock he called it on WNBA draft night and people got mad but its the way this country rolls. He said that Angel Reese just saved the WNBA. A little overboard but the ladies knew to come looking fierce that night and they did the numbers speak for themselves. CC was not shooting 3's, so it was not about her ballin skills that night, it was about who was looking hot. I think men need good play and looking good. Let CC come out as lesbian and see the fans in these conservative states that love her like Iowa and Indiana decrease. They do not want CC as herself really, they want her to represent their unspoken ideologies about "America being great in the 50's..." Let her date a Black NBA player, again her conservative fans will decrease. Image is everything especially when it is driven by a patriarchy. Don Imus called the Rutgers University womens baskeball team "nappy headed hoes" in 2007. What he saw was a lot of Black overrepresentation and not enough white American women representing on the basketball court. He may have crossed the line, but he was speaking for a lot of folks that would never say it out loud. In 1977 the NBA was overrepresented by Black players, (I was in HS researching this way before graduate school 2008. Lol). Al Attles (Black) took the underdog GSW to the 1975 NBA Championship. White fans were tired of it and it showed when Larry Bird took a lowly Indiana State team to the finals, it was the most watched college game ever. Then he went to the Boston Celtics. Boston had a racist reputation, so that was an interesting twist. The Womens most watched? Iowa vs LSU. 2023. Iowa vs South Carolina 2024. Say what you want, beauty and racial contention or ones sexual orientation sells tickets more than just talent. Drama has the non fan watching now. The commentary about race and sexual orientation is all over social media. The non fan loves the drama and will watch the game too, for now. I do not watch the mens college either anymore and barely pros.

The problem with Jason Whitlock, as with all conservative hacks, is that he tries to PANDER for his own gain. In the past he tried to paint ALL WNBA players as Britney Griner - ugly, tattooed butch lesbians that wanted to be men, which has never been the case. This is what he thought his audience wanted to hear, when the facts are women are not as athletic as the men, so sports fans didn't watch. Now people are realizing that the ladies can have their niche WITHOUT comparing them to the men. This is how they should have been marketed from the beginning. If they can bring in 1 tenth of the revenue that the men bring, it will be great for them

Don imus said the racist part out loud. There is just no excuse for that comment. He never would have referred to a team of all white girls as hoes. This country has always been this way, never dealt with its original sin and refuses to admit there's still a problem. We can pick any era, go back a hundred years. When Jack Johnson fought that white opponent and won, white people across the country rioted in hundreds of towns and attacked black people minding their own business. It truly is a sickness, and its passed down from generation to generation.

He ain't lying. People forget that Michael Jordan, besides being the best ever, was incredibly handsome and charismatic. He was the perfect spokesperson. There's a reason Nikola Jokic, Russell Westbrook or Yao Ming aren't in every other commercial. Prime Shaq was a personality and handsome. Kobe was so handsome. The league thrived under them. Whether we like it or not, looks matter when selling superstars. It's human nature. I remember Venus Williams correctly pointing out the discrepancy between the sponsorship dollars she got vs Maria Sharapova, and we all know the reason why. Maria looked like a supermodel, and she was great at her sport as well. It may not be fair, but it's what brings in the $$$ and the entire league benefits from it.

Well I don’t think the main athlete behind the surge of interest in women’s basketball, Caitlin Clark, is known more for her beauty than her game. It’s her game and her rivalry with Reese and others that piqued people’s interest in the game. Caitlin Clark isn’t going to win any beauty contests but she’s an incredible player with charisma/confidence that brought eyes to the game. Now that there are eyes on the game, beauty is being sold.

Truth be told, it has taken 15-30 years for the base level talent in women's basketball (WNBA) to get to the point where it's watchable. More girls are playing basketball from the grassroots level and honing their skills from a young age and it's showing up in college. Shooting and handles have increased. That will be their niche. Explosiveness and hops will not be their strengths. Don't try to act like men. Just be the best women that they can be. Also I think the WNBA and the NCAA are doing a better job at promoting the female aspects of the sport and downplaying the more masculine female players. The WNBA is a business first and must cater to what people want to see.

Its not like women don't watch mens sports for the same reasons. All you have to do is look at David Beckham- his popularity far outstrips his ability. He wouldn't be half as popular if he was average looking.

I don't think it's ridiculous to point out attractive women in sport. I don't really watch basketball like that, but I do watch Football or soccer depending on where you're from and during the World Cup a Korean soccer player went from around 20k followers to 2m just because he's attractive. People like watching attractive people, it's why more people know Jude Bellingham than Jamal Musiala, even though skill wise one could argue that Musiala is better than Bellingham.

Man is way the f outta line, but he's not wrong. It's a combination of things though, one being that we as a society have finally embraced the idea of women having athletic bodies rather than blindly calling them "masculine" and shaming them for having the slightest bit of muscularity. Another big one being that with so many style tutorials and influencers online to learn from, Gen Z girls grew up in an age where they knew from a young age how to enhance their best features and find the look that best suits them. Half the girls in this year's draft class could skip overseas play and just go into modeling during the off-season.

I was talk to a pro-feminist friend of mine and she said that the great play of the Women's NCAA was because of the WNBA. She got mad at me when I said "that is not true. nobody watches the WNBA". The players of the women's college game takes after the NBA. They are watching and playing a more exciting style of game. You can tell they watched An1 and KZbinrs street ballers all men's content.

Angel Reese games are sold out for the season. She's a good player. Literally I love her game. I love a big in the paint trading paint that hustles. She's my favorite player in the game today. Rookie Dennis rodman was great. Also Angel Reese has a billboard that is just her as a model. And she rates fully as a model. It's like whenever my favorite musician JJ Johnson were doing the music for the six million dollar man and the top model in the world is the guest star that week.
