Word is, there's a very bald and very canadian guitar player with small hands that absolutely shred on a 27" scale 8 strings. His "bald by choice" and italian counter part with ginormous hands has a 26-28" multiscale 8 strings and he also shred the heck out of it. So in the end you can make everything work for you. Personally I was kinda daunted by multiscale at first but ended up getting an Ormsby which has the most ridiculous fan of 25.5"-28.3" after seeing these previously mentioned gentlemen live this summer. I'll say that shredding a multiscale guitar is an absolute no brainer for those on the fence like I was. It takes a day or two to get the hang of it and less than a week for it to just feel natural

My favorites are guitars that dont look like they can go low, that do. I'm not sure the word I'm looking for. But I'll say "old school" guitars that look one way, but sound way different from what you'd expect. It's the reason I love baritones so much. Because a lot of them fit into this scenario.
@BaenaCarcosa12 күн бұрын
I def agree with that. I’m trying to get my baritone strat down to drop E cuz I think it would be hilarious to use for a Carcosa set. Also why I like the Jazzmaster shape so much for 8 strings

I really appreciate that you took the time to address these questions and the answers and options you gave were really good, especially for someone who is probably looking at getting their first 8 string. There are so many options out there that it is definitely hard to choose sometimes without playing first. I would love to see you demo a Cerberus 8 or a Legator 8 at some point!
@hanislip12 күн бұрын
Bought a random guitar; it ended up being a Legator Ghost Prototype... 28-inch scale, 5-piece neck-through, EMG X pickups, a 1-of-1 bridge (it'll suck if it breaks) as far as I'm aware I have the only one in RED. I'm still figuring out the 8 strings.

Was this one up on Reverb? I'm sure I saw something like that recently. I got my first Legator earlier in the year - a 7 string Opus OT7T and was really impressed by how it played. The ultra-thin neck is so comfortable. Definitely considering one of their Ninja models as my first 8 string. Headless just doesn't look right to me atm but I can understand the benefits - getting a smaller guitar, and good tuning stability.

Just wanted to drop a comment - my first (and only) 8 string is a Schecter C-8 multiscale SLS Evil Twin. I absolutely adore it. 25.5-27in scale gets the job done all the way down to C or C# if you're comfortable with thick strings (.85-.90). Thing comes with active Fishmans - the crunch, the definition, the playability is fantastic. It also comes with locking tuners! Edit; C(1) - double drop C to clarify

12:22 More on this discussion/consideration, multiscale guitars’ necks are the full length of the longest string, so the fan curve of the frets is directly related to the lengths whatever scale each end is. This can cause the fret spacing for chords to be challenging if the fan is too aggressive. Let’s say you have a multiscale that goes from 25.5-27. That means the space for straight chords will be off by 1.5”, which may not be a big deal, depending on who you are. Jackson, for example, has a multiscale 8 string that’s 25.5”-27.5”, which is a 2” fan, making some chords difficult to pull off. Make sure your fan curve on those isn’t too drastic for your liking.
@johntravoltage95912 күн бұрын
At the same time, whenever a fanned fret (or slanted, single scale frets like ibanez quest) makes it harder to do a chord, keep in mind that it also makes other different chords easier. for example, if I'm struggling to make a chord lower on the neck where the lower strings are being played with higher frets, and higher strings have notes in the chord on the lower frets, a multiscale fretboard actually brings those frets closer together, and vice versa when you get to the higher strings. It is a consideration to make, but it depends on what chords you like, it isn't just purely a negative to chord playing.
@Emm_R_Guitar11 күн бұрын
I own a hype 7 which is 27.8-25.5. - and Id also add that I find alot of players get put off by multiscale because they put the guitar in that "rock n roll" on the thigh position when playing it rather than more traditional classical style between your legs. One you do this I find it actuallg makes it easier to play tbat a straight scale. Ive played a legator straight scale 8 at 28" and started to have issues with chords a tthat scale length. But realistically - if your using a 28 for pow tunings or high gain you arent playing chords on that bottom strong cos it will sound like sludgy garabage anyway. One thing to add also add if you are a really particular or diverse genre player is string spacing - if you plan on detuning youll need thicker sets. If you dont consider this then you might find yourself having a harder time with things like jazz chords and hybrid picking... I have this issue on my hype. My ibby spacing is slightly bigger and its does make things might easier to fret when it comes to strange chords chords and hybrid picking

For the multiscale stuff Ormsby is a really good brand to go with 1 for the price and quality but 2 for modification, they sell the base plates needed for pickup swaps if you're keen enough to pull apart an off the shelf and change the plate to suit their guitars (also makes it easy to send to custom pickup manufacturers if you want to get a set made) they also make a bunch of different pickup options and even did a run of bareknuckle copies a while back I ended up getting a set of their "aftermaths" and they sounded pretty damn close to the real ones!
@MichaelSnidaro11 күн бұрын
Great video, lots of good points there. I'd like to just point out a couple of things you mentioned: - there is indeed a multiscale evertune bridge which Aristides developed from (and for) Evertune. I think it's the only company offering that option right now - the relationship between the pickup position and its sound has indeed some science to it. The closer to the bridge you put it, the more "cold" harmonics you're going to amplify. For the lower strings this means a thighter (and brighter) sound but on the high strings it could become shrill. As you said, it's just a matter of taste.

Ormsby and Aristides guitars have multiscale guitars with Evertunes. Ormsby also sell baseplates for pickups so you can slant your pickups to the right angle (not sure if there are other makers who do, but have seen a few angled baseplates for sale).
@BaenaCarcosa12 күн бұрын
Aristides does and I will def be getting one at some point in time! While Ormsby does too - it is worth noting that the bridge is straight and only the neck is multiscale which some people might not like. I haven't personally tried that configuration so I can't make a call on it though.

Hoping to get my own 8 string some time next year! I actually do want to try and use all of the fretboard 🙂 Have narrowed down to the Schecter Tao-8 so far. Seems pretty perfect - has their ultra-thin neck which I love, and those pickups just sound so mean. I even bought one of those 'Colossus' pickups for my 6 string Schecter Reaper after hearing how great they sounded for modern metal (your own demos helped with that choice too!). I also like the look of an upcoming Legator model though - they posted some teaser pics of a new Ninja X8F model with a 26.5 - 27.5" multiscale which seems like the perfect multiscale for my own playing style - I wouldn't really be going below drop E, and I still want to shred (or make my best effort to...) the higher strings. But like you say - there are less pickup options for a multiscale routed for the Fishman soapbars. I'm not so keen on stock Fluence Moderns if they aren't the version with the single coil voicing. If I had an unlimited budget, I'd love to get an 8 string with a trem! I have a Legator OT7T which is a 27" 7 string with a Gotoh 510 trem, which is a vintage style non-locking trem so much easier to deal with than a Floyd Rose. I really love how that guitar plays and the trem is so much fun. Not many 8 string options if you want a non-locking trem but still want to keep the headstock though! All I've seen so far is Kiesel and Aristides. I've seen the new Jazzmaster shape Artistides have teased, and I think that with their multiscale trem would be my dream 8 string. Of course that shape isn't out yet - but considering an order like that would be something like £5000, I'm sure it will be available before I've even saved up half of that. I think that will have to remain a dream for the future though.

Pickup swaps between multiscales is very achievable if you have open coil 'buckers. You can swap the coils from the new pickups to the baseplates of the originals. Requires some modding, yes, but it's very doable if you set your mind on it

Sounds ok but buzzes like crazy and also realized setting up isn't the same as I would on 6 or even 7 since I don't usually tune lower than A Standard on 7. I don't know what's really considered "normal" for height on the lower strings
@sky-hakala12 күн бұрын
The lower strings need to be a bit higher than the other strings, but not much if you have good tension, the right string gauge is super important, RG8 I believe is a 27 inch scale, you could try the horizon devices strings, or stringjoy has a tension calculator on their website as well as the option to order custom string sets. I prefer around 16 pounds of tension per string.

Andrew is kinda wrong(?) while being right: if you (as an bedroom guitarist, lol) want to chug-a-chug on the low strings a 6 string Baritone is not necessarily superior to an 8 string; i do like the wider neck of an 8 String so much more than a thinner, longer neck of a 6 string baritone. (comfort is a thing for bedroom guitar players, double lol) If you play only at home into a digital Setup, "the longer the scale the better the definition" is just a myth.
@Dream_elixir_band12 күн бұрын
Fully disagree. With a 30” 6 string I can slap on thinner strings for the same tuning as a 27” guitar, therefore the tone is immediately better than a big fat huge string where you lose a lot to high end clarity.

If you first buy a 6 string learning the 8 string will be still weird because you are going to be confused. And you also spend money two times so my advice just buy the 8 string if you really know you want to stick with an 8 string for a long time. Maybe it could get hard to learn but it's hard either way. I started on an acoustic and after like a month 1 or 2 I just immediately sunk in the 8 string world and I didn't regret it at all. The only actual harder part on the 8 string as a beginner is that your hand needs to stretch more because of the wide neck and muting all the strings that you are not currently playing.
