Another drummer pointed out that the amazing thing was how Nandi kept the rhythm, tempo and timing during a live performance. They said it was one thing to play a cover from a recording, which is perfect every time. But playing a song live is a different kettle of fish. They said Nandi played those drums like she was the original drummer on the album. Kudos to Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins for giving us this most satisfying conclusion to the drum battle with Nandi.

I agree. There are people who can play and often you can tell they do so in a bubble. I think most of Nandi's siblings play and she works at playing with others. It's a huge deal to be asked to play ALONG with the band. They all treat her like a professional and she lives up to that. She has a great talent and she works hard at it. I think she's gonna go far in whatever she wants to do. Shout to the whole family Bushell!

You're reaction to her is perfect. Everyone I've seen react to her, who is also a musician, has the same reaction halfway through. Because we thrive for our music, because its so ingrained within us, whenever we witness another musician absorbed in the moment and passion, we feel it. We've been there. We know how she's feeling. Feeling free. Feeling weightless. Feeling in control. It's overwhelming yet light. I cried the first time too, and still get emotional every time I see this again and again. A mate of mine said: "the 16ths are a bit sloppy and the snare is late in the first verse particularly, but it sounds like crud so maybe she just couldn't hear what was going on. That's probably why they stopped completely to reset in the middle of the song. Then Dave Grohl walks up to her and starts playing so she can *see* the timing of his guitar line and get the rest of the song right. You can play all the right notes and still sound like shit - playing *as a band* is the important bit. And I don't think the rest of the band played the song particularly well either." Bitter much? I thought that was a bit overly-critical IMHO. Who else can play that well at ten or eleven for fucks sake!

@@bench2346 YES! I went and listened to other live versions, and you are 100% correct - that was normal. I just won't link them to any more of Nandi's stuff, which is s shame.

@@VauxhallViva1975 I appreciate the follow up. I don't understand how anyone can be critical. It's not a Juliard interview, after all. The confluence of things that need to take place to make this moment happen -- Dave and FF being incredible human beings, Nandi at age 11 not only being a massive talent on drums but also having the gift to entertain and feel comfortable doing so, Nandi's parents encouraging her and supporting her to pursue her dreams. I cry everytime when I watch this video because it's so many amazing and rare things happening all at once. I'm not going to fault ppl for wanting to react critically, but this is simply a beautiful moment to me.
@luttekikker
@luttekikker 2 жыл бұрын
@@bench2346 Exactly. In the end it's Dave Grohl with the FF that got Nandi all the way from the UK to the USA to play with them. The promise was that when FF would play again in the UK she would be invited. But this is SO much cooler and insane, this is what all the fans of Nandi and Dave Grohl wanted to see. And so it happened. I know there ain't such a thing as a free lunch in the music industry, but I really hope FF can somehow keep helping Nandi with advice and connections for the coming years. She has an enormous fanbase already, something not many get at her age. But she is also very touching to many, the way she combines cuteness, skill and entertainment without blinking an eye is truly something for sure. Public speaking is one of the most scary things for adults. Imagine what drumming for thousands of people during a concert is. It's probably twice as scary.

After watching it several times what struck me hard was two things: her complete and utter joy and just how insanely relaxed she was. Tempo was perfect, the excitement didn’t push her. Her enthusiasm becomes infectious toward the end when the rest of the band gets into it too. She nailed it precisely. She will be a huge star.
@RaymondBCrisp
@RaymondBCrisp 2 жыл бұрын
She's just a born pro...no doubt about it. Will be interesting to see where she lands in a few years. Will also be interesting to see what she can write for herself. It's one thing to be able to cover a song exceptionally well, and an entirely different skill to be able to come up with your own killer drum parts...which drums to hit during the fills, where to put the accents, where to incorporate rests, etc. Not everyone is a Neil Peart or Danny Carey or Taylor Hawkins...or David Grohl for that matter.

I'm not a drummer but I noticed the clever nuances like opening the hi-hat at the end of the verse to increase intensity. Her fearlessness is what stands out for me, I mean, a 17,000 crowd expecting a professional standard performance. Then there's the sheer power she gets into the snare and tom combo and if that's not enough the timing (as you said) is immaculate. And if that's not enough, she lets out those screams which are a joy to behold. The band are, of course, gob-smacked. I feel like I've been watching a magic trick, a really powerful 20-something professional playing in a tiny 11 year old frame, and I don't know how it's done.

I've probably watched this 50 times - and every time tearing up. When she's crossing from the backstage she stops for a second and takes a deep breath like "wow, this is really happening." I saw Rush's final gig there at the Forum, I cant even imagine how the adrenaline would be pumping thru her at that point. There are performances where in 30-50 years' time people will still be talking about, Beethoven's 9th Ode to Freedom conducted by Leonard Bernstein when the Berlin Wall fell is one (also on KZbin); this one is another one. She displayed amazing technical chops; and I hope that she has a whole support structure around her to keep her motivated, and grounded. When Dad is screaming, that's like when I am tearing up watching my 13 y/o daughter just nail a singing part in a school play, I just get so emotional and I cant help it. Keep it up Nandi!

Although I’m not a huge Foo Fighters fan, this is one of my fave songs and I love Dave Grohl. I could watch this so many times. I feel like he’s the golden retriever of the rock world-just a generally happy and positive individual. And he has 3 daughters, he’s the perfect roll model for Nandi.

I've said it before in the comments for a couple of the other compilations of this performance, but it's worth repeating - you've got Taylor Hawkins looking over your shoulder, and Dave Grohl out in front of you - there are pro drummers that would not have done as well as this ELEVEN year old did had you dropped them into the same situation. Her performance here is almost beyond words 😊
@FuturCrayon
@FuturCrayon 2 жыл бұрын
1. You don't know that. Don't wanna be that kind os a**hole but she ain't that tight on the hihats (but in the context of the performance it doesn't matter). 2. Age is relevant until it isn't. There are way too many examples of child prodigies who did not turn out well (actually more than the opposite). Though I hope she'll have great success because she's a good drummer.
@jim2lane
@jim2lane 2 жыл бұрын
@@FuturCrayon 1. in regard to her hihat work she is absolutely spot on with very good technique. She flexes her wrists just like you should in order to not overwork your shoulder. If she appears out of time on some shots it's because these are numerous shots from personal phones stitched together and don't always line up with the audio. 2. it's one thing to be considered a prodigy at something. It's something completely else to be thrust out on stage in front of 50K people and hang in the pocket with a bunch of professional musicians like she did. Many so called prodigies sound amazing at home or in a studio or classroom setting, but can't make the transition to playing live with other musicians like she can

You're right about that drum speed. I don't drum but just trying to do it in the air I couldn't get past the first set and I believe you do it three times in this song. When you see her grimace, it's real. It hurts, but she does it.

I've loved this song ever since it came out in the mid 90s. I even performed it at my own wedding. But I don't think I've ever actually teared up to it until I watched this video. Nandi isn't even a teenager yet and she's already a legend. She played this song like she f*#$ing wrote it.

You HAVE to go check out other videos of this event! There are some that have amazing perspectives, most have great audio. Watch Dave's full lead-up and intro, it tells the story so well. Then re-watch and catch all of the little things, like Taylor watching with a grin from behind his kit throughout the song, the instant toss of the stick at the break, the "mic drop" of her drumsticks as she walks down, Dave's amazed and delighted reaction to Nandi's triumphant, arms in the air wave to the crowd; no fear, no intimidation. She owned that crowd. Then there's her choice to wear Dave's signature red plaid shirt to drum with him, and his subtle acknowledgement of it on stage. Just the perfect fit of the song itself to the situation, when she chose it she could have never known nor picked a better one. There is more every time you watch it. I can't get enough. It's really amazing to see such a heart warming reward for such an amazing girl. Dave is my new hero. Here's a good clip with the full introduction. Well worth the watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnurp4WLr9N4i9k This one has the stick flip on the break, the "mic drop", and a lot more, with a good angle and audio: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4Xdlppna55si68

Nandi has come such a long way from playing a few bars of a song then running out of juice. Her endurance is awesome now! Even Yoyoka Soma admits to feeling tired after playing a similar 16ths hi-hat pattern at only(!) 144 bpm (see her recent jam session with drummer Bobo). I'd also like to mention that Nandi and Yoyoka follow each other on IG, and Nandi has told Yoyoka she's an inspiration. So, if Nandi has picked up some of Yoyoka's efficiency by watching her play(?), that is a wonderful thing, and what it's all about, really. Cross-pollination at its best.
