It's a charging monster! England to Italy in an IONIQ 5, part 1 🇮🇹

Күн бұрын

My wife and daughter flew to Italy without me. I followed with the dog in the IONIQ 5. I’ve driven to Italy before in an EV (a Kia e-Niro) so surely it’ll be easier in the IONIQ 5 with its amazing charging speed? Surely!
I start the video by showing how I planned the journey using ABRP (ABetterRoutePlanner.com) and then show just how much fun it is using toll booths, getting a pet into Europe - thanks, Brexit! - and what you might expect from the European charging network. (Mainly IONITY).
Part 2 will feature my wife and daughter. Get ready for that! 😬

Ok just got to the end… magnificent video. Loads of pee, charging, tolls, baby, traffic jams, rerouting of maps and working out what was happening with charging… I honestly couldn’t look away. And the best part was to arrive, with no glass of wine waiting, only to be completely ignored by both if your girls for the excitement of seeing your dog… perfectly sums up long haul car trips, marriage and parenthood in one jam packed video. I honestly can’t wait for the return trip with everyone in tow… the little preview at the end has me on the edge of my seat with excitement. I will be watching with a glass of wine. Keep up the fantastic work you incredibly brave and honest man.

A great tip I learned with the Kia EV6 (basically the same car in regards to charging) put it into sport mode 10 minutes before charging. This will warm up the battery to allow faster charging! Works like a charm, I always get like 240kW using that trick.

You have no idea how many people claim they have mega bladder, but in fact, they don't:) I'm not saying this to offend you nor I'm denying your ability to drive 6 hours straight. What I meant is that many people complain about the range, and in reality its not the range they are afraid of. It's the idea of powerbank driving you around. And problem with all governments is, the longer people resist electric cars, the more they pay (in taxes) to people that have them. Tax credits, incentives, vat reduction etc. And I do have ev and ice. Driving ev only for past year by choice😊

Impressive speed of charge, but charging up at 45% is almost criminal. You need your navigation to skip a charger and go to the next so you can arrive at 10% (±5%) . It really makes me value the Tesla navigation nearly as much as the superchargers. All in all I think I would love your car, but there is no way my wife would put up with it, and as we are a single car family I think we will have to stick with an our old model X for a while longer yet.

Once again, I'm in an EV with Andrew while he problem-solves his way from England to Italy. Bottom line, for me: Amazing how much sustained mental agility & software mining is required to simply drive a substantial distance while in a (best available) EV. To be honest it aint that difficult. I like to use abrp or checking ionity locations. But if i want the car navigation does all that for me anyway, this is in a volkswagen id.3. But it aint as smart as abrp cause ig prefer 80% charges abrp does adjust to the next stop.

Really good video and beautiful car. I love those things. Only downside I can see is relatively short range on battery between stops. 9 stops and an average of 128 miles over the 1157 miles seems a lot. Upside is that it does charge quickly. Seems the car breaks the Ionity chargers that I think maybe over heat trying to deliver a high rate of charge for too long. Explains maybe why so many of those things are broken so often. Look forward to trip home and next video. Good editing too and commentary.
@heijxje
@heijxje Жыл бұрын
The stops could have been farther between them, since he mostly seemed to arrive with 35 to 50% capacity left, which in absolute terms is almost the full capacity of a 1st gen ioniq (28kWh). If the preference for ionity were let go in ABRP, it might have been able to lose maybe 2, but at least one charging stop. Also I wonder if reducing your speed to 120 or 110 kmh would improve the efficiency as much as to lose another charging stop, thereby actually gaining time.

Really love this video. Nice to see the difference in strategy. I sometimes charge my model 3 to SoC%'s where you are arriving with at the chargers 🙂. I always try to arrive with sub-10% and charge to 50-65%, depending on the next leg. But with the insane charging speed of the Ioniq 5 in the higher SoC regions you can pull off your strategy as well. Very relaxing.

The ionic 5 reminds me of my Honda FRV - flat floor and easy to configure - superb! The 5 is definitely on my shopping list and these videos help to weigh in its favour. Thanks!

Great experience and I don’t think our dog would have been so good. Looking forward to your experience coming home with the boss 🤗, good luck and stay safe, bet you stay in more expensive places on the way back, like you did on your last trip a few years ago. Bob from Medway Kent England.

Many thanks for for this wonderful road-trip video. I always enjoy watching you, but this one is just the one I needed to scratch my roadtrip itch a little, which has been steadily increasing since I got back from my first EV long-distance trip (Munich North Cape in Fiat 500e).

I agree with zollotech comment: your charging experience is really helpful for anyone thinking of buying an EV, especially this IONIQ 5. So I'll say we have a TESLA model S and love everything about the convenience of it's charging routes. Most enjoyable is the AC Dog Mode. It is an extreme comfort knowing anyone looking in sees that our pups are comfortable and happily waiting for us to return to the car. Thanks for sharing your educational journey to Italy!🤩🤓 p.s. adore your sweet Baby! 🥰

Hi, love your videos! As a new EV owner I have learned a lot from your experiences. I have a Cupra Born and have just got back from a family trip to Berlin and Brugge. We had no issues charging, i used ABRP as a guide and managed to charge every time with either Bonnet or ChargeMap. I felt confident attempting this thanks to your videos, keep up the good work 😊

So I never thought I’d be watching this kind of video. But I’m currently in the process of buying a 500e and I’ve watched a couple of videos from you and Mrs EV about it, and this video shows as recommended. Clicked on it, and by the time you’re arriving in France, I’m opening a bag of popcorn.

Very watchable given this was a long video! Key takeaways. That was very cheap in “fuel”. It was very quick to charge and gave you the break you would have anyway. A fantastic car and so much want. Charging network is better than I thought BUT still a little temperamental. Finally looking forward to seeing the next adventure! Cheers

Andrew, great journey. Thanks for the 10sec preview of the trip home, was assuming it would not sound as glorious. I am starting a 4000 mile road trip in a Taycan. Looking forward to it mostly with some concerns of charger reliability in some desolate areas of America in the Colorado mountains. All the best.

i have the Kia E Niro 2020 model and exchanged it for a combustion engine Mercedes C class estate 2022 model for a summer holiday from nothern Europe to Italy. It reminded me how much extra thinking goes in to planning chargers and waiting at every stop. I really enjoyed the freedom of a combustion engine and the trust that there is always a place to fuel up nearby

Well you definitely seem to travel the most laid back way! How you remained so sanguine over the pet passport delay I don't know?! Enjoyed the trip, great editing, Baby cheered up as soon as her little family was back together, bless her. We used to have a dog that did the bed scuttle, he never got on it but loved to lean on it and rush all the way round and back again. He'd come upstairs all by himself and it sounded so funny from the living room below, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, turn round, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, then hurtle downstairs again pleased as punch. 😁Mad as a box of frogs! Looking forward to the entertainment on the way back, I feel sure your patience just may stretch a little further than Flaviana's... could be wrong but... 🤔 😅😁👍
