Hi Nick. Great video. I have an Apple IPhone. But one thing I think everyone always forgets is that many functions of the iPhone and I believe Android are usable WITHOUT Apple Carplay or Android Auto and via wireless Bluetooth/NFC. I can make calls, receive calls, and play music (with album covers visible on the MBUX screen) without ever plugging anything in and without using Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Unless you want to view your text messages in your car, I think most people won't even need to use Apple's and Android's apps.

Very True Richard! If you use native Apple Music on an iPhone you can actually still browse music you’ve saved on your phone. People also like to use it for 3rd party apps like Spotify and even Waze navigation. I like both tbh!

Nick..be a bit more honest about what Mercedes Benz offer in terms of Apple Carplay and Android Auto. My W177 A Class has both on-board but if you want to use either you have to pay Mercedes Benz £495 for 'smartphone integration'. Mercedes Benz are milking digital services for as much as possiible with this and reduced mercedes me services during the first 3 years of ownership. This policy is making me look elsewhere for my next car.....
@npoleary3 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, sorry it’s hard to be very specific as specification can vary so greatly across models and packages etc. There is a cost element to installing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the first place when a car is built so naturally some of that cost does come down to what is seen when configuring one from scratch. Some models have it included for free where as Mercedes-Benz’s entry level model the A-Class it’s part of the Smartphone Integration Package when being built. However...you can add this after the car’s been built if you wish, heading over to the Mercedes me store it can be purchased for around £299. Other manufacturers have done similar things but actually charged an annual subscription for this where this is a one off payment. Regarding Mercedes me Services again, it varies so much from model to model, all details are in the brochures but it used to be primarily free on high end Mercedes. Now it’s more commonly seen included with most models only very recently. Most models can subscribe to the Mercedes me app from approx 2015-2016 onwards.

Hey John, using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do vary. Most new Mercedes with MBUX now only utilise the screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. I wish it was full screen but this is normal and unfortunately there are no settings in the car to control this. Because of the many variables involved I don’t actually know why it’s like this but rest assured other models are the same.

I wish it was full screen too but there are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before. The reason is because MBUX on Mercedes’ is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. Hey Mario! I wish all cars have a wireless Android Auto / Apple CarPlay experience too. Hey EAMONN Tynan, You’ll have to double check what specification your CLS is, the equipment changed for the UK in December. CLS’s made in the factory before this, you need COMAND which is part of the Premium Plus Package to make use of Android Auto. If it was made from December onwards in the factory then Premium Plus is standard which also includes Android Auto as part of that. These CLS’s also come with MBUX. Hope that helps 🤓

Hey Adam, in this instance I would speak to your local Mercedes-Benz for a potential update :) Back when the A-Class in 2018 launched, the smartphone package update over the air didn’t exist. It was added a year later which meant there are some A-Class’s out there without this function. An update in the workshop added this ability to buy Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Nick, hi. My mb is a 2013 Gla. With the old screen, not touch screen. I'm really struggling to connect android auto. Also, when I use Bluetooth for navigation, I get voice guidance,however if I have the radio on, then the navigation stops on my car speaker. Is my car too old perhaps?

I don’t think Android Auto existed in 2013. It came out after Apple CarPlay in approx 2014 / 2015 and then started to appear in cars after that. I think that’s probably how it works, although I’ve not sat in a 2013 one sadly, I only started producing videos on my channel in 2020 and sadly my local Mercedes only has cars over the past few years so difficult to even see one.

I'm disappointed that this review omitted any mention of an obvious issue with Android Auto on the 2020 Mercedes models: The touch pad and steering wheel control cannot be used to navigate through AA. Basically your only option is to navigate AA using the touch screen. I found this not to be the case with Carplay, where all controls work fine. I tested this with my Mercedes dealership on other cars and using other phones to be sure. The problem persisted. After some research I learned this to be an issue from the Mercedes system. I hope they fix this in their upcoming updates.
@npoleary4 жыл бұрын
Hi karawmak, Yes I noticed this, as this was my first time using Android Auto I wasn’t sure if that was normal. I tried it in another Mercedes model and it was the same. Have you tried it in a different car, like non Mercedes? I’m curious myself, does it do the same thing?
@karawmak4 жыл бұрын
@@npoleary Hi Nick, I can appreciate your reason for not discussing this. This issue is odd, and I was not sure at first either. It's precisely why it would be helpful to let people know. I have followed your channel quite a bit when I was considering to buy my CLA 2020, and your videos really helped- thank you. At the time you only had a Carplay review. To answer your question, I had not tried on other cars, but I was quite thrown off when I found this to be a problem. There are multiple discussion threads on MB forums that tackle this issue, but no one seems to have a definitive response from Mercedes. This is no reason to not get the car, and AA is still very much useful, it would have been nicer to have all the controls so you don't have to take your hands off the wheel or reach out to the screen while driving. Now, it maybe fair to presume a compatibility issue that is not MB's sole fault, but since customers are paying for AA, they should make sure it is compatible with their otherwise very impressive MBUX system. I'm hoping future updates will fix this issue, but wish to know if this is even in the works or not.

Thank you! Ah very nice! Sadly I only started making videos on my channel 2020 onwards so have limited coverage of models prior to that but…I have sat in models like that. a) is not correct. This is only true if a car has the multimedia system called MBUX. In that car you will have either Audio 20 or COMAND. b) basically before models with the MBUX multimedia system, you had to select COMAND to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. c) So I would lean toward this option more as if it’s not listed under HOME, CONNECT / APPS then it won’t be on that car. There are however some people out there that offer 3rd party solutions but I’ve never researched that so don’t know what they’re like. I’m surprised a Mercedes dealer or even Mercedes me support can’t give you a definitive answer. My local one is where I get info from if I’m stuck with something I don’t know. They’re really helpful! Hi Jag, Wireless charging is an optional extra on GLC’s so just make sure you have it. It’ll be in the centre console in where your cup holders are and it’ll be a rubber pad. @npoleary Жыл бұрын
I wish it was full screen too but it’s the same for Apple CarPlay on MBUX. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!
@mariyahjaan Жыл бұрын
@Nick O'Leary thanks for the reply 👍. It must be an android issue as my wife's apple car play fills the full 12.3" display in my 2018 cls with comand. Just wondering if mercedes have thought about filling the 1/3 of the display currently taken up by the android auto logo with the cars display like it does using the split screen function it currently uses (additional display area). Being a geek I'm thinking if android takes up 2/3 I could make use of the other 1/3 with consumption data or maps etc... just a thought.

Hello Nick, does it only work on A class? Will it work on a 2018 GLC 300?

Android Auto can work on other models too! :) However it’s only available on GLC models after it’s facelift which was about 2019 ish.

Hi nick Can you use the touchpad to navigate, Android auto screen. Thank you, Derek

Some models and phones offer that support. It varies sadly, an Android I purchased a few years ago didn’t have support but a newer one I purchased recently did have support. I used in my most recent video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noW2hoSEmt6SoKs

Why would you use your phones data for navigation ? When you have navigation on your vehicle? Thx

Hey Joe, it just gives people an option 🤓For example using Google Maps or an app called Waze in some countries can show speed camera locations and free Live Traffic & Map Updates. Apple CarPlay & Android Auto have more benefits too but it’s just user preference at the end of the day

So not wireless carplay? I just picked up a 73 plate GLB Premium Plus Night Edition today and there is no wireless Apple CarPlay I can see

Sadly not all cars have wireless CarPlay, Mercedes introduced it onto models that have a multimedia system called MBUX NTG 7 (without a touchpad in the middle) MBUX NTG 6 (with a touchpad in the middle) is only wired as it doesn’t have a wireless receiver for CarPlay.
