Andy Williams had his own television show in America in the 1960s. This was the opening and closing theme. It is the song he is most identified with. Such an incredible voice. This is the music my mom would listen as I was growing up during that time. And even though I was into an entirely different type of music, I have to admit I was equally enthralled by the power and emotion of his velvety voice. Check out "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing" and "Love Story" by him. Btw, Andy is also known for his many iconic Christmas songs you hear every year. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by him is one that has become synonymous with Christmas here.

Andy Williams is one of my favorites, and this song is my favorite from him. My favorite book growing up as a child was Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, and this song is definitely about the Mississippi River and two drifters after the same dream of freedom. When I hear this song by Andy Williams, my memory still goes back many, many years to a slower, simpler time when I was sitting under the shade of a tree reading Huckleberry Finn.

Always think of the early mid 1960's and.... my parents and little brother when I hear this....they are all gone now and I am the only one left...the world is strange and different without them, as if my life history has been erased and am supposed to be someone else...

As a little kid I watched Andy Williams' variety TV show in the mid 60s. As a kid you thought he's not cool like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. But as you grow up you get all that out of your system and appreciate his amazing talent. I'll never forget my older cousin, who just came over to Boston USA, she was going gaga over Andy as she sat on the sofa in 1966.

Thanks guys for the long trip back in time.....memories... old guy hear and yes I remember when this song came out, and I still have a couple of vinyl records of his original recording a 33 album and a 45, single. singers then performed dressed in a suit and tie well groomed hair, classy people, then the decline started and we see the garbage called grunge, modern music, Technically their singing was not much but it was what we had. Thankfully others, many, have come along, and kept these classic old songs alive, like Lucy THomas, who sang this song when she was 14 on UK Kids and brought the house down, and then re recorded it at 18, absolutely gorgeous version and I would suggest you guys give it a listen, both Lucys versions are available on You Tube, she has re introduced these old classics to to the modern generations, thanks for the trip back in times, the Memories, and be safe.

I think people then experienced life in a way that is difficult to do today. They were more in touch with their humanity and emotions, they had a better vocabulary, and were able to express themselves in lyrics that were more creative and artistic than we find today. We now have trouble trying to do this, but when we hear it, we can still connect to it and get the feeling, like an echo of a voice from a distant past. The nostalgia for this severed limb is strong...we feel it, it's just...there....beyond our grasp. Something lost, but still the echo persists.

Dominika, I think I heard you say that you like sad, touching songs..If that's the case, you must hear "Yesterday, When I Was Young" by the French singer from this era, Charles Aznavour..The lyrics will bring a tear, I'm sure. It is beautiful!..Other people had nice covers of it, but this one (the original) is the best, imho..Btw, He did it in French, of course, but I'm talking about the English version.

When I was close to bringing Andy up and calling house lights. My boss asked me if he could go get him for stage call. I chuckled, your the boss I said. Made his night. ;0)

I grew up in the 60's and my music tastes were influenced by the hit songs playing on the radio - doo-wop, rock-n-roll, Motown sound and so on - but there were a few songs that would have been considered old fashioned that transcended the popular music of the time because they had something special like a purity and beautiful melody - I remember Moon River was one of those songs for me. I remember my mom was so surprised I liked the song because it was not what she called "young music".

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961, in color) starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly is a rom-com from the old days that the MerchantOfAlba needs to watch some Saturday night. "Moon River" was introduced to the movie going masses in the opening credits, and has been with us ever since. The movie itself was in 2012 selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culturally, historically , aesthetically significant.

For any listener who knows American literary culture there is one phrase here that provides a lot more depth. The phrase “my huckleberry friend” refers to the character Huckleberry Finn created by literary giant Mark Twain. In the novel of the same name HF was a poor boy who ran away and floated down the Mississippi River on a raft with a scorned black man in one of literature’s great soul journeys. So this one phrase opens up vistas of experience in transcending the things in life that confine us.

Andy Willaims could make your heart melt. I was very young when this came out. These were such simple times, times when everyone's dreams were sometimes all we had. Our family was a dysfunctional family, so for me this song would often make me cry too. There's nothing wrong with crying. It means you have a good soul. That's the beauty of older music. If you love really old music this old made me cry when I was a very young boy. Some call it the Disney National Anthem: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnzLZ4uujseVf8Usi=js4xKA5swF6BzLZH

When Henry Mancini wrote "Moon River" for Hepburn to sing, he had to contend with Hepburn's limited range as a singer." Mancini's widow said, "It took him about a month to write the first three notes, and the rest came to him within a half hour after that." (TRIVIA: George Peppard's character "Paul Varjak" originally was gay in the novella,)
