Andy really cracked me up when he finally got the story.😂😂😂 It's what makes this song so great. The lyrics and vocals of the music paints a great picture of a real life situation that some have actually found themselves in. You hear it and feel it, and can imagine yourself being there seeing it unfold.
@alan737952 жыл бұрын
I also enjoyed that part of video immensely. In Andy's defense, I often listen to new songs in the same way, i.e., I don't always pay attention to the lyrics first, but intake the vocals as part of the entire sound design. After that, I start to appreciate the lyrics, drum fills, guitar riffs and other components that make a song memorable.

According to Skynyrd: "This song is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night."

Great song, but you’ve got to hear “Call Me The Breeze” which is one of their greatest hits and written by the infamous JJ Cale, which has a great solo by Gary Rossington and an unforgettable piano sole by the late Billy Powell! On another note you mentioned similarities of Joe Walsh, which I highly recommend a mid-80’s song he wrote (while dating Stevie Nicks) called “The Confessor”! An incredible song full of meaning in a time of a transition in his life and includes a powerful guitar solo which seems to release some anger he has built up inside (my two cents). If it doesn’t make KZbin, you owe it to yourselves to listen to it on your own!

I think _Tuesday's Gone_ and _Simple Man_ are close. _Tuesday's Gone_ is probably the better composition, but it's wistful in a way that feels like it dilutes its emotional impact. _Simple Man_ is pretty consistent in how it mixes a little darkness, maybe even a little dread, into its wisdom. Yep. I knew it! What a total underrated classic, down home grooves and a great story told well. And this song is S tier, all the way.

I agree that this is better than free bird, but I like "call me the breeze" even better. It's the only Lynyrd Skynyrd song that isn't s*** kicker music. (Love the piano)

S**t kicker? Maybe dig a little deeper into their catalog before you say dumb s**t

T For Texas has the guitars "talking" back and forth, with a great piano solo in there too.

I remember when I was a young kid in the late 70's, riding shotgun in my brother's 1968 Chevelle SS. He'd have this song rocking on the tape deck, through his Jensen 6"x9" Triaxial speakers. I can't hear this song and not think of that. Great memories in a great car!

So many Skynyrd greats, you have a long way to go, a little premature to label this their best. Try "Was I Right or Wrong" or "On the Hunt"

One of my favorite slash most frustrating things to do is to watch Alex’s face as he reacts to lyrics and looks over at Andy for a reaction, and Andy has completely missed it. 😂 I personally think lyrics are a huge piece of what makes a great song great, and can’t imagine not hearing them, but I think it’s a case of engineer brain vs writer brain.

I read or saw an interview with members of the band. They said in Jacksonville Fla, Ronnie Van Sant was dancing with some guys girls. The guy reached down to his boot and Ronnie thought he was reaching for a gun, so he told the guy, "if you're going to shoot me, it's going to be in the back or the elbow" ,something along that. He and his other band mates ran out and they wrote the song that night.

They are touring again and will be here in Fresno soon. Can't wait to go. I last saw them when they were first touring in 1972. Wish my friend from the first concert was still alive to see it. I will have a cold one for him.

Not even close for me, Simple Man has the best sound and great leads that are not as manic as Free Bird but for 9 out of 10 times when I get an itch for just one of their songs, it is Simple Man. That was the best song when I saw them live, Free Bird is often an exercise in excess, though still a great song.

Every bar in the south always played this nightly. Always got people up and moving. BTW ,they got their name from a teacher they all had in high-school, math or science if I remember correctly, Leonard Skinner.

These guys were the real deal. They were drinkin' playin' fightin' men of the south. What they sang about they lived. Those early albums rarely missed, and this is another one that was right on target. If you play guitar, this is great fun to play.

Skynyrd has been my favorite rock band for over 40 years. They have many great songs but my favorite has to be Tuesday's Gone. It's like Calgon it takes me away to a better place when I hear it.

The Greatest Band in American History. Just imagine how many hits they would’ve made. Still left us with so many Classics.

One of the greatest, for sure. The Allman Brothers Band, was musically superior to LS. The guitarists of LS were decent, but no one in LS was close to being the best, while the Allman Brothers Band had one of the top 3-5 guitarist to ever live in Duane, and another top guitarist in Dickey Betts, plus amazing percussionists, phenomenal bassist in Berry Oakley, and vocalist without par, Gregg Allman, who was a great keyboardist as well. I give LS the node, but not by a long margin, in the song-writing- lyrics department. Both both LS and the ABB created Southern Rock. LS did rock, flavored with country, while the ABB fused Rock, the Blues, Jazz, and country in a way no other band has come close to approaching in quality or scope. "FreeBird" is great, and "Sweet Home Alabama" is not great, but spectacular, but "Whipping Post" just as good or better musically, less dead space, "Tuesdays Gone" beautiful, but "Dreams", "Stormy Monday", are otherworldly. ""Blue Sky", Midnight Rider", Melissa", "Little Martha", "Not My Cross to Bear", "SoulShine", "No One To Run With", "Back Where It All Begins" are all great songs by the ABB. "Jessica" the instrumental jazz, country, inspired marvel is considered by many musical authorities one of the greatest compositions of the last 75 years, and the jazz inspired masterpiece "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" is the rock instrumental to which all other rock instrumentals are compared. I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen the ABB live many times, and LS live in 1976 before the horrific plane crash. I consider them, plus CCR, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young perhaps the 4 greatest American Bands. But music is entirely subjective, there are no absolutes, just a matter of taste.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the very first band I saw in concert. In New Orleans. June 6, 1974. I was 16 yrs. old. They opened for Joe Walsh.
