I subscribed on this video because this is an uncut training session. It's fantastic to just be able to observe a great trainer and their dog develop the process without the cherry picked "that was perfect" cuts most trainer videos I've seen provide. I get it, trainers want to show case the 'right' way to do it, but I'm sure the temptation with many is also to showcase their own skills. Uncut like this video is brave but I think the most valuable for viewers like me. Thanks man!
@joefish65462 жыл бұрын
For example, one of the most interesting parts of the video for me is the first time the trainer let the tug fall to the ground on the switch. I was thinking, wait how is he going to pick that up without the dog going for the tug on the ground as he reaches for it (which I'm sure is what my guy would do). Instead there was a few seconds of good play to ensure engagement and a casual pickup followed by good play as he moved the item behind his back. Gold!

Thank you very much 🙏🏼 I agree. I enjoy a good ‘highlight reel’ as much as anyone else, but I admit my favorite training sessions to watch are uncut with a dog that is new to training.

I normally use a small soft treat instead of 2 identical toys. Give the "out" present treat. Then instantly back to toy. I've always worked on building trust that I'm giving the dog something better then back to play. I don't want your toy. I've always had fast release times. I will try your way today. You're a good teacher. My kids are learning from you as well with their malinois. Stay warm up there in the buckeye state.

I have just been blessed with an English Lab, he has been trained by Clear Path for Veterans in Unstate NY. for two years prior to going there to train with him and then to return home. My service dog is trained for 38 cues, and I am now learning. Seeing your jacket in "How to Teach The Out Command, I see the advantage to the near surround pocked configuration. Very nice! I think the old-school compulsion methods to teach "out!" are (at least partly) to blame for having dogs that grow up to "hate" the out command. I've seen this so often; Mals that will let go on cue, grudgingly, to avoid e-collar pressure. But then, these little lightning quick "flash bites" they take when they were supposed to just apprehend the decoy. I believe that with your method, that would not happen, as the dogs don't feel they're being deprived of the bite. Great work, and you've got a nice tug-collection there, plus a very nice property, with that lake as well!

I get bit quite a bit. Sometimes it is bad presentation, sometimes it is bad targeting, one time it was that I got the soft version of the tugs you use here and a hard strike took the tug and my hand (I then bot the firm version). I know if you ain't bleeding, you ain't training, but I am 67, and have old man skin--like crepe paper--I bleed a lot. So, I got some cut resistant gloves intended for kitchen work. Made a big difference for me.

I see what you did there Andy. Really love how you are utilizing the natural behaviour of the dog to create success for her and you. And I'm a big fan of the 'conflict free' you explained. I was already working with 2 identical toys like this, but am wondering: how do you move from the swtich to the actual 'out' command?
@AndyKrueger2 жыл бұрын
Once the dog has Switch totally down, I then preface it with their name. What starts to happen is the dog hears the name and starts to anticipate letting go. Then I can introduce the Out and reward by letting them re bite the same toy instead of switching. This is a very condensed version of the steps! And there are a ton of ways to do it, this way just works well for me. Also since I compete in French Ring, it is in the rules that the handler must say the dog’s name before Out. So I like to start that early 👍🏻
@ekelindner79912 жыл бұрын
@@AndyKrueger thanks!
@-demon_dog-85112 жыл бұрын
@@AndyKrueger I'm a little confused so after they master switch you then change the word to the dogs name so you'd say "Fiona" and wait for the dog to out then reward the toy? or say the dogs name then show the toy to get them to switch? once they start anticipating outing when you say "Fiona" you then move onto using one toy and do what? do you just say "out" and wait for them to let them bite the same toy or use their name then when they let go of that one toy let them re-bite and then randomly say "ous" and reward when they let go?

Great explanation! I need to slow down because I GO TO FAST. Lol. Would this be necessary to teach if your dog doesn’t like to bite and hold?
@AndyKrueger2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I believe it is necessary. First, it can actually increase a dog’s desire to bite and hold once they understand it’s an interactive game. Second, if one day your dog grabs something they shouldn’t, you have a way to communicate to them to let it go 🙏🏼
