Turning a bowl/platter from a gnarly slice of Horse Chestnut burl ..I was really close to giving up with this piece it had voids which I filled with epoxy and antique gold pearl ex and some real punky wood which I soaked in ca glue to try and stop it disintegrating ..It may still be a little punky, but the emerging figure that's trying to get out of the bowl makes me glad I persevered with it ..

Finally!!!!!! Someone smart enough to cover your lathe bed before you started applying and spraying finish on your project. Thank you from a retired shop teacher that would have pulled his hair out if he saw a student doing what I have seen time after time on these woodworking shows.

I was in middle school back in the 70's when I first used a lathe. It is one one the most satisfying power tools a wood worker can use. I have watched many of your videos and am amazed with the creation that you have made. Well done!!!!!

Andy it’s such joy to watch you turn a piece of wood that others would either burn in their fireplace or just throw away into the beautiful art piece you create. You have the eyes 👀 of a master.

So, if you pause at 7:33, look at the piece at the 7 O clock position, I see a face, ears, forehead etc, looks kinda like a genie of sorts to me. I thought that was gonna be the emerging man. The best part about a beautiful piece of work/art is what we see in it. Beautiful.

When started cutting the first circle and all the “interesting” bark edges were cut off my heart screamed “NOOOOOOOO! 😱😱😱😱. Oh me of little faith 🥵 As usual you uncovered the hidden beauties of the wood. You ARE the master.👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍.

Ca glue has saved my arse when working on things more times than I care to count especially when working with "punky" wood on something (awesome expression, I like it) BTW I tend to use a medium grit sanding block to remove it from skin when it doesn't easily peel off, the sandpaper removes the glue but leaves the skin unharmed, pumice stone in the bath works alright too. Yes I use my fingers to spread the glue when I'm working with it, definitely not something I'd recommend for anyone to try but that's just what I've found works best for me

My favorite kind of turning wood -- gnarly to the extreme :-) Came out beautifully, Andy. I know you probably had to use epoxy and CA glue on the seriously punky bits, but I've had success flooding punky wood with a half & half mix of cellulose lacquer and lacquer thinner (basically sanding sealer without the sodium stearate soap), followed with full strength lacquer. I've done some pieces that are probably 50% lacquer by weight :-) Clyde

Thanks Clyde .. cheers for the tips I do use half and half cellulose / thinners I will have to try it .. I just bought some wood hardener to try the type you would use on wet rot I have 2 more large burls off this tree which are as gnarly as this so any tips are gratefully received ..cheers Andy
