This video is fucking 6 years old and you probably know that already, but I've seen someone saying that that thing inside Filianore's Egg is an Ouroboros, which makes sense thematically considering the idea of "the artist who is fed up with its art and just wants to move on". Myiazaki did various interviews where he strongly suggested he didn't want to make a Dark Souls 3 and that it would be last Dark Souls game. The Ouroboros symbol (a snake eating its own tail) represents an end which is a new beggining as well. Dark souls 3 is the ending of the Dark Souls series, but Myiazaki is far from being tired of creating. What a fucking awesome artist.

that bit at the end with the eggs rising out of the sea? id always interpreted that as a hopeful message for the continuation of any kind of life after the passing of man, and a highlight to mans passing insignificance. The 'god' whether man-made or not, whether concious or simply a force of nature, needs to see the finality of humans before it brings forth new life in the birds in the eggs. As long as even one last human with sense held on, to an empty shell of hope, there could be no resolution or revolution. out with the old in with the new.

To me, the girl becoming "adult" and then drowning symbolized that she became mature after seeing that the egg is empty and lost her innocence and blind faith in the world, which was her existence. Basically, as you said, the girl symbolizes specifically that faith and now that she has matured and no longer has that faith, that "side" of a single character (the other side being the boy) is now dead, causing her to drown instantly.

I usually don't like trippy stuff that is hard to follow, but this kept my attention all the way through. I mean, i could watch those scenery all day. About my interpretation, i think that glowy sphere it's god and that he is recolecting the remaining souls of his creation (the statues), like they were a part of him to begin with so he is taken them back, posibly to try to create life again once this world dissapairs. The egg of the girl represents her hope of this world becoming nice and warm again, and it's empty because that will never happen. Also, i haven't played Darksouls 3 so i didn't notice all the similarities, really interesting stuff. The guy being like a "chosen undead" makes a lot of sense.

I think the theme of the film might be the progression of beings without god, soldier dude introduces the idea that their creator may have died after dreaming them up. I don't know how the god figure orb would fit into my take away. But the female character in her dying moments creates a miracle via all the eggs, without gods help. The creator of the film going through a loss of faith may also fit in with this as he may have realized that life goes on even with the absence of god and his miracles

This video is so fucking well-made. I was kind of hoping for someone to back me up on the "everything is bleak, God has abandoned us" interpretation rather than the "faith ended up paying off" interpretation Chris Stuckmann seemed to favor. I think both interpretations have merit (as in they could both reflect what Oshii was thinking when he made the film); however, your description of this world's "god" as mechanical and likely man-made helped solidify the bleaker interpretation - for me, at least. You've earned my subscription.
@vicpc557 жыл бұрын
I would question the interpretation that the egg was empty. After the girl finds the shell, we see her running through the stairs, and they are overrun with branches that weren't there before. When we see the outside, we can see one of the bird embryo trees growing from the structure they were inside. The embryo tree and the egg are related, because the breaking of the egg seems to have caused the tree to appear, but I don't know if the tree came from the egg or if grew (or became visible?) as a result of the egg breaking somehow. My interpretation: the tree represents humanity. The guy describes the tree as draining the soil to try to reach something, which would be humans destroying the earth in the name of progress, and also has parallels to Babel's Tower. The egg represents the hopes and/or ambitions of humanity. There was a bird/angel embryo inside the egg, and when the guy breaks it, the embryo is killed. The spirit of the embryo tries to ascend to heaven, but the tree grows to capture it. This represents humanity clinging to the false hopes/the past/etc, even after hope is dead. This is a more negative interpretation of the main character, because instead of showing the world the egg was empty, he actively kills what is inside it.

Watched it in High School and hated it. Watched it last night and love it. (Long ass interpretation incoming) I didn't read it as hopeless as your interpretation. The girl fills the jugs to watch the bubbles rise to the top. Contrasting with the constant rain of the flood, it seems like the bubbles are a hope for salvation. What you refer to as God, I believe is the angel of death, he's literally a giant bubble leading the faithful to salvation. Finally, when the girl drowns, the bubbles she releases turns into more eggs like the one she carries (in contrast to the translucent "real Angel's Eggs"), indicating that the eggs themselves are also the hope for salvation/a test of faith. They are empty, but they aren't meaningless. (Reminds me of Easter service back when I attended Church where they would give empty Easter Eggs to represent Christ's empty tomb, mild digression) The first thing we hear in the movie is the sound of an egg cracking and we see it followed by a child's hand growing larger, withered and tanned, presumably the boy's. I think the implication is that the boy is ultimately welcome for salvation, but his faith is already irrevocably shaken, and he's doomed to break every egg he comes across due to his own skepticism. Then there's also the debate of whether or not the movie's depiction of "salvation" is desirable, but this comment is already long enough.

Oh and another thing, just think of how much this film inspired Miyazaki, just think about bloodborne.... the village of the fishermans

The bird is supposed to be a symbol of hope, and it is supposed to take humanity and lead them to the promised land (it's symbolic of course). The egg, which the girl guards, is supposed to give birth to the bird. The boy cracks her egg (which turned out to be empty), after which she matures into womanhood and releases a hundred new eggs, before dying (destroying her hopes and dream, and stopping her from filling jars). The new eggs (which turn out not to be empty) grow to become birds and she is immortalized as a saint. The conclussion of this symbolism: Japan really, really wants women to give up on their dreams and careers and instead make more children.

I love that scene, I think it's the second time the girl asks "who are you?" And he replies "who are you?" And the looks on their faces just seem so satisfied. Like "yeah, neither of us know who we are anymore, but there's no way to find out so we are both content."

My interpretation of Filianore and the egg. As long as she is alive, the power of the lords remains. As long as the egg is intact, she is asleep which she must be alive to do. The egg is a representation of the lords' containment (egg shell) of humanity and the world (the abyss material on the inside). The egg is partially decomposed because the breaking nature of the everything, but enough of it remains for it to keep its composure. The perpetual state of Filianore and the egg cause the infamously convoluted timeline, which in turn causes the Dreg Heap fuckery and all that jazz. When the Ashen One touches the egg it breaks down, symbolically breaking the illusion. This wakes Filianore and we are fast forwarded to the point where everything has finally decomposed, which would cause the egg to decompose, which would be the point where Filianore would have naturally died. This is the point the world and humanity were never able to reach because of their containment and Gwyn tying the fate of the lords to humanity itself with the curse. At the end of everything there is Gael who remains from the beginning of everything, almost reaching the point of accumulating the entire Dark Soul.

Wow, my interpretation is extremely different. For one, I don't think the island is an overturned ark. The ark is very clearly where the girl lives and has been carrying jars of water. You can see the silhouette of it several times, and it's also where all the animal fossils are. The island is an actual island, but it should be noted that it's completely surrounded by water, illustrating that the world is still completely flooded beyond this one mass of land. I also don't think the man represents someone who's lost his faith, but instead someone who is a tester of faith. He could have broken the egg early on, but instead he returns it, asking her to question her own faith instead. When she holds onto her faith, he ends up doing the deed himself. This essentially relieves her of her burden. The egg is indeed empty, but I feel that's less representative of her faith being a complete lie and more to do with the test she was given. She seemingly was instructed to care for this egg, even if she can't remember when or by whom, and did so completely out of faith. There actually being anything in the egg is completely irrelevant. The man breaking the egg ends this test, which in turn starts in motion the events of the girls maturity and the birth of new life. Essentially I believe the man was instructed by God to test her, which he did and she succeeded. For her efforts she is now honored by God as a saint, and in my opinion the reseeding of life on the planet. Based on the island and what's on it, I think the implication is that man did live on for some time after the ark. The girl is use to being alone, but I'm not so sure if those fishermen are meant to be statues. I think instead that they are what remains of humanity, which long ago built the city on the island along with the technology present in the film. I feel they represent followers of faith who utilize there beliefs destructively. They've essentially lost who they are, and in that sense the girl is alone. She follows her faith constructively, choosing to devote her life to caring for an egg in hopes that it will bring about life once again. The fishermen are also attempting to kill these fish shadows, which based on the Noah story could demonstrate that these men learned nothing from the lesson of Noah and what it represents: they still desire to kill and consume. Basically I feel that the fishermen and likely other people still living on the island who honor and worship the ark (perhaps going so far as to shape the island in the arks image through the lines of rocks shown at the end of the film) but completely misunderstood its implications. Through their hunt and creation of technology they've continued to shape what God created through the destructive will of humanity. Considering the changes to the Noah myth, it makes me think that maybe the Jesus character (he has bandages where Jesus was nailed to the cross) is in fact meant to just be Jesus. He was born many centuries after Noah built his ark, but instead of doing the events in the Bible (which he can't do as the world is so different) he instead forgets what his purpose is. Seeing the fossil of the bird/angel reminds him of his purpose, which in this case is far different than that of the Bible. I realize the director lost his faith, so it's quite likely much of what you said is more of his intention. That said given the context of the movie, it's hard to argue that the state of the planet is not normal. Even with God being steam powered and made of metal, a higher power exists beyond the will of man. The same can be said for the validation of the Noah myth. Within the context of the movie, God exists and, as a result, faith in Him is to extent validated.
@reNINTENDO7 жыл бұрын
You know, now that I think about it, this movie probably deals with reincarnation (which is possibly why the characters have memories of things they can't quite place), so perhaps the island _is_ an ark, but just an ark from a flood event that took place before the second ark that now rests on top of it. We're getting meta here.

I don't know if this is fully relevant to the conversation, but some really important imagery in the catholic church is the mustard seed and sowing a seed of faith, which could be related to either the egg or the tree. As well as the symbolic imagery of fishermen in the bible, they are generally considered to the companions of christ and provide "food" or faith of the people. again I don't know if that's really relevant, but as someone who went through a transition from faith to atheism, this shit rocked!

You do mention at some point the parallels between the man and Jesus but I'm wondering if you have some more thoughts regarding that. I had a bit of mixed reception of his character. On the one hand as you mentioned he clearly seems sceptical and wants to reveal to the girl what is in the egg. But on the other the parallels to Jesus are abound. He seems to see the God Construct in the beginning, he wears a cross and on top of that he has stygmata on his hands which are the wounds that Jesus had from being nailed to the cross. So why would a character that represents this view have parallels to a character that seems so contradictory to it?

I have seen a lot of analysis videos on this movie I feel I don't even to watch it. But I will eventually.

Oshii has always believed that authorial intent is not important, and has also said that no director really knows what he's created. So just because he said he had no dea what his film was about, doesn't necessarily mean he had no meaning in mind for it. In other words, you may well be (mostly) right
