I brought my husband who is retired navy in to watch your video. In one glance he said that is an old fire control technician insignia. Because it is no longer a Navy uniform you can "legally" wear it. He said you could take it off or leave it on. We both know you are good with the seam ripper so do what you want. They should just be chain stitched on. He also said the length of the pants is perfect. They were supposed to be shortish. The fabric is wool melton. He said dry clean only. Fresh stains can be cleaned with club soda. He cracked up over your "seaman" non-joke. Good job with the hats! I loved them all. Thank you so much for sharing.

A story about the needle packet. When I was a small child, I remember war veterans coming door to door selling "sundries" to the house wives. My mom alway bought a packet of needles and a paper of pins. They had this sort of art and packaging. My mom alway cried after they left, even though I though they seemed like happy guys. She felt bad that they went house to house getting 25 cents per house, all day long, but were unable to hold a factory job because of health reasons. Which were mysterious. Now I understand that they were just doing their best and moving forward any way they could in between emotional problems. They probably made more than the 10 dollars a day minimum wage workers earned at that time, and now I admire them for making a way.

I love your sense of style -- watching you is so much fun. I used to collect old hats, bangles, vintage clothing and what-not at garage sales in the 1980's (a la Molly Ringwald/Pretty in Pink). I'd wear old paste jewelry to Catholic High School with my plaid skirts and white blouses. I'm SO glad you got the cabinet. If it needed to belong to someone, that person is you. You'll love it forever. - T

You must not get rid of that fun cheery yellow polka dot blouse! The blue feather hat is dripping with class...and that Vogue cabinet is amazing! When I saw you wanted it in the last video, I said, "God why can't she have this? She brightens so many people's week and I wish she could have this." I almost cried when I saw you got it. You deserve every kindness and every single thing you purchased for allll the hours upon hours of hard work, research, learning and teaching you do. Thank you for sharing your joys and accomplishments with all of us!

That "mommy swan" is so beautiful! That red suit looks so gorgeous on you!! And that hat! Red is definitely your color (among many others, let's be honest.) That shell floral wreath brooch is so cool! Round of applause to the artist that created it. I agree that the black one looks like a Pansy, that was my thought before you even said it...after my initial thought of "Um...skull?" Seeing you in all these lovely hats reminds me of a scene in Are You Being Served? where Mr. Humphries convinces a lady to try a hat because "not everyone can wear hats, but you've got a hat face." The joke that was made and yet not made. You crack me up. Peignoir is said a bit like Pain-waar (if that was any help. I'm rubbish at explaining pronunciations!)

I think you should keep it and style it with a belt. it will pull it in at the waist and then blouse out in a very attractive way. it was a good buy and the print is really adorable. Also, the fuscia flower and bow hat would look wonderful with your green swing coat :) Just an idea. Glad you and your mom had a good time and thanks for showing us all your new purchases :)

I just found your site and I am enjoying it. I was an active home seamstress in my youth. I made most of my own clothes even my nurse's uniforms and my wedding dress. I am now attempting to get back into sewing after a near 30 year dry spell. The dress you purchased at the Madhatters Antiques in Lancaster, was made by Dutchmaid in Epharta, PA. The clothing was sold by home demonstrators. The clothes were mostly women's and children's and underwear and very well made. My mother sold the clothes during the 60's and early 70's.

Love the white belt you wore with the blue dress. My Mother had an almost identical one back in the 1950s. I also have my Mom’s glasses from the 1940s. They are similar to the ones you purchased. A little story about your Florence figurines...my grandma, Bessie Mae, was an Avon lady in the 50s and 60s with customers in Pasadena, CA where the garage store of Florence was. Grandma used to stop in to get a figurine whenever in the area. Loved them. She lost a lot during the Sylmar earthquake in '71 and a few more in the Northridge quake. After that she stored them all tucked in the couch cushions unless she knew someone was coming to visit. 😂 The ones we still have are the couples so there are a few male figures. I proudly display her Marilyn in the pink gown with the hatbox. Grandma wore a Navy suit like your red one, navy gloves, a little black patent leather purse, a hat like your white one, and pearls. Classy lady. Miss her so. Thank you for letting us live vicariously through your excitement and wonder.

While that naval uniform is really cute and cool, I think you are right about not wearing the sweater with the rank on it. The pants are fine since no one would know but I think it would be somewhat of an insult to be wearing a rank you didn't earn, you know? But maybe you could display it on the wall or something, maybe in honor of whoever did earn the rank. I don't know just a thought. Also you should do a new sewing room tour.
@kirstenpaff89466 жыл бұрын
StormChasingNinja, I agree. The pants are fine, but unless you are doing historical reenactment, it would be a faux pas to wear the sweater. Apparently it is also against the law for civilians to wear military uniforms in the US, though I would guess that this does not apply to antique uniforms, and I know it doesn't apply to generic items like the pants, because those can be purchased in Army surplus supply stores.

Oh, so many wonderful finds, so many interesting places!! I instantly liked the white dress, but the RED suit made me gasp - you look like a designer of Coco Chanel kind, like I instantly saw you directing a whole house of seamstresses, making your designs, model walking around and a big showlike stairway with white velvety carpets, and you watching over your fashion empire. (I was a little disappointed you didn't show us the red hat with the red suit together afterwards , hehe). I imagine the “lemon like“ (yellow/green) dress with one of these tiny frilly aprons at the waist, the dress gave me such “perfect stepford“ vibe ;) The nylon blouse is also gorgeous on you, as are all the hats. You look amazing and completely natural in them.
