You say several times that you are “struggling to understand it”…. Well, I’ll tell you: Angelina at 8 years old knows more about singing Jazz than you do at 40! Disrespect to you, but Angelina is a genius at arranging songs. And she wasn’t “just given this song to sing” by the producers, she chose what to sing, and how to sing it. There’s a rehearsal video taken when she was working on this, and she told the trumpet player what notes to play! You also mentioned how to really jusdege her talent, you need to hear her sing a cappella. Well. She did! Listen to her rendition of “I’m a fool to want you” in the second round of this competition.

You can’t explain Angelina’s abilities. She has a natural gift that will continue to blossom as she grows older. She’s 16 now , and in the last year her voice has changed dramatically for the better from a base of excellence. It’s mind boggling, but makes me very fortunate to have watched her grow into quite possibly the best singer on the planet. Her recent concerts in Norway were incredible live performances.

Angelina's vocal performances, even from a very young age, have always been sophisticated, rich, and full of nuance. Every syllable is like a mini-masterpiece, and as a listener by the end of the song you feel so sated artistically that you need to give your senses a break. When you combine that with her unmatched emotional impact you get a singer I've never gotten tired of listening to in over two and a half years now.

Angelina and her closest, decided early on that she would have as normal a childhood as possible. Even when she won NGT, 8 years old, many wanted to sign a contract. Everyone was dismissed! Even Disney. When it comes to the actual training and choice of songs etc., it has always been Angelina who made all the choices and decisions. Parents and others, on the other hand, have asked her to take it a little easier sometimes. Angelina is very special and her own driving force. Ever since she was 3-4 years old! Of course, all relatives have helped and protected her from all the evil that unfortunately exists here.

Thank you, I have been waiting years for someone to do this clip justice. She was nearly 8 and I must have watched this 20 times so far and never without tears rolling down my face. I think she had a lot of exposure to good music early on and was blessed with an exceptional ear, which lead to perfect pitch, and the artistry is just one of those sacred mysteries. The microphone almost covers her face, she is just so cute which in no way prepares you for what she sounds like. I envy your journey into her next few years because every twelve months there is an exponential improvement in her voice, it is truly inexplicable and wonderful. A lovely thorough evaluation from you once again.

My favorite moment of this song is the minor variation on "your daddy's rich" that she throws her head back and pulls off flawlessly. Overall her low notes are impressive and her signature unhurried delivery. She performs the song a few years later with the world famous Kork orchestra, much more polished, the same magic.

Terrific analysis of Angelina's jazz abilities. She has said she listened to Billie Holiday from age 3, and that if it weren't for Holiday there would be no Angelina Jordan. She seems to have absorbed jazz as a toddler and it went in deep. And she kept evolving her understanding of great jazz singing. Now she's exploring lots of other genres, but jazz is always inside her musicality. Thanks for following her chronological journey. So interesting!

Critiquing, the vocal capabilities of an eight year old child is a difficult task. What reference can a professional voice coach point to rationalize how uniquely gifted and special Angelina is at eight years old? Angelina started her Norway’s Got Talent journey at seven years old. She had just turned eight years old before this breath taking performance. Show me another eight year old that has the same sense of timing, can sing in pitch and who has the vocal dexterity and maturity that Angelina had. Angelina put forth a professional performance.

Angelina's music is definitely a journey, as you say. Even though she has this incredible talent at 8 years old, using the vocal tools that she has, when you listen to her singing this same song at 10, live with a full orchestra, you see her progression in 2 years time. It's the same with so many of her songs - she sings "Fly Me to the Moon" at so many different ages, from 8 to 16 (her last, a live performance a week ago in Norway), and each one sounds and is interpreted a bit differently, and you can hear the newly acquired skills that comes with more maturity. She is a remarkable talent, that is for sure. Thanks for this reaction (and yes, many of us like Aurora too! lol)

The earlist video I have seen with her singing an entire song is at 6 years old. First time in a recording studio, I've seen it written she recorded 3 songs but the only one I have found is "I Who Have Nothing". She still has reactions of a young child, and if you react to the song remember she is reading and singing in a second language. At an age that if I remember right my mom was still tying my shoes, there are short video's at earlier ages but not at the level you will see at age 6.

Angelina Jordan Astar (born 10 January 2006) is a Norwegian child singer whose audition for the 2014 season of Norway’s Got Talent at the age of seven, singing “Gloomy Sunday” in the style of Billie Holiday, became a viral video online, and led to worldwide press coverage. She went on to win the competition (at eight) with her performance of George Gershwin’s “Summertime”. Since then she has worked to raise millions of dollars on behalf of environmental causes and children’s charities around the world. She always performs barefoot, after befriending a young shoeless girl while traveling when she was six years old. Jordan wrote a book about the experience and became the youngest published author in Norway. In April 2016, she performed “Fly Me to the Moon” on the first season of the noncompetitive children’s talent show Little Big Shots. A year later she performed “What a Difference a Day Makes” on the UK version of the show. In 2014, Jordan created her own KZbin channel to which she has posted TV appearances, official music videos, and live concert performances. In 2017, she created a second channel to present performances of cover songs. Several of her most popular videos have surpassed one million views.

You mentioned "I Who Have Nothing" one of Angelina's first times in a studio she was 6 or 7 (before NGT) and she sang "I Who Have Nothing" yes it is raw but it is one of my very favorites of Angelina performances.. Her lungs are just not big enough to hold those notes but she does it and the joy in her achieving it is just incredible. She has the lyrics in front of her and she is reading a second or some say her third language at that age, I was struggling reading English at that age and it was my only language.

What a brilliant analysis of Anglina's rendition of this song. Thank you. I think that Angelina has an innate ability to hear a song and then, in her mind, she is able to arrange and modify it to meet her vision. This is when things that can't be taught become apparent in the result. Personally, I don't think that she is fully aware that this skill is unusual - it is more that this is the only way to get to a position that her body can execute her vision. Probably by now (age 16), she is more aware of the process but then why analyze something that works so well? Like most prodigies, early on, Angelina probably thought that everyone inherently had this skill.

@@PrymalChaos Neat thought you raise. To a 3 year old, walking, speaking several languages, singing jazz like Billie and learning to play her ukulele perhaps all seem equally daunting. She had grandma Mery as a full-time teacher/mentor so didn't get very far on the ukulele. Re "Summertime assigned to her", is that how these contests work? I'd have expected song choice to be entirely up to the contestant with perhaps an approvals stage from producers. ?

The story goes that Pavarotti was visiting a friend. it may have been in a village in Argentina. He was just there to relax, vacationing. A local young woman hears of his visit and decides she wants to audition in front of the impresario. She knocks at the home where Pavarotti was staying and makes her request. Pavarotti agrees and she sings for him. Then she asks him what he thinks? Pavarotti explained it this way. The great sculptor, Michelangelo, produced many great works of art. But, he always had something to work with. He had the marble. Young lady, your voice. I'm sorry to tell you. It does not have the marble. This is the distinction of Angelina. She has the marble. In fact, she has the marble of Michelangelo's statue of David. It's a gift that was forged in the womb. Of course, talented individuals have to work to improve on their craft. But, no amount of work makes up for not having the gift.

One area where you state about her understanding of English. At this age she was completely fluent in English. She had been reading and understanding since age five. As she has stated she understands English very well when asked about understanding of her first audition “Gloomy Sunday “. You should read her book published at age nine based on her diary entries at age six. At age six she had an understanding of the world that most adults do not acquire within there life time. Dig deeper. You will be amazed and dumbfounded.

Angelina chose all her songs herself, all the singers did in this competition. NGT do things differently from AGT. There’s a short video of the rehearsal for this, and Angelina is very involved in the arrangement. Her “look” over at the trumpet player is to make sure he’s with her. Then you get the quick smile, almost like a reassurance “I’ve got this”, to someone in the audience (probably her grandmother). Great composure and confidence in herself, - she loves what she is doing. Your analysis is very interesting, but trying to figure out Angelina is going to give you a migraine, better to just enjoy, at least till you’ve heard another 20-30 songs. You’ll still be wondering though!

Thank you for your reaction. Angelina chose her own songs. You must watch her practice session with this song where she showed the musicians what she wanted. Did you watched her performance when she was 9 of " I put a spell on you " that was her own arrangement ? She is not your average prodigy kid because she is music. She sang in her cradle at 18 months with a mike in her hand a line of a song. At three she wanted to sing for Simon and you must watch her at 6 for the first time in the studio singing " I who have nothing " and so one can go on . To understand Angelina's way of singing you must know that she grew up with jazz and in one of her videos when she was at pre school, she refused to sing the children songs that the other were singing. She was annoyed and shaking her head looking at her mom or grandmother that was recording her. I just saw that you did react to her " I put a spell on you ". You mention " I have nothing ". Angelina just did that song in Norway at Allsang pa Grensen at age 16.

What I feel in these young performances is you can tell she is at the very edge of her range and ability, and that range and ability is amazing. When I listen to AJ, an insanely talented 2 foot poppet, she reminds me a bit like Björk who also has that effortless sultry, jazzy vocal, albeit a massive age difference. From living in certain countries years back, trying to learn their language to not only communicate but out of respect (failed miserably with all), their tongues are positioned so differently with various languages and both these two, English is their 2nd. I’ve said it before, I’m no singer so probably talking another language, jibber 🤷‍♀️, for which I’m fluent. I just remember one close up of AJ singing Bohemian where I noticed the placement of her tongue to the side, slightly back a little, followed by yet another crazy note pouring out her mouth. Anyway, I’ll shut up now and go back to being mesmerised by this gorgeous freak.

Excellent analysis. Here's some more background on Angelina: First, no one "gave" her this song for the finale; Angelina has always picked her own music. Second, you remarked that she glanced at the trumpeter halfway through: she wasn't GETTING a cue; she was GIVING the trumpeter a cue. Note that, from that point on, the trumpet provided ad lib "fills" at the end of each line. Because not only did Angelina PICK the song, she ARRANGED it as well. Finally, you mentioned she wasn't "singing in her own language." In fact, Angelina learned English and Norwegian (and likely Swedish and Farsi) from birth. By this time, the family had already lived in the US briefly (when her father worked in Albuquerque, NM for Statoil) which explains why Angelina speaks English like an American. BTW: She also speaks Farsi (Persian), having also spent quite a bit of time in her Grandma Mery's native Iran.

I like your reactions and how your background puts music into context. I’m going to disagree with something you said for this one, though. You wondered how Angelina can sing those Summertime lyrics with such great nuance. I believe you even said that she could not really understand the lyrics because English is not her native language. I’ve watched just about everything she’s sung (multiple times) and her phrasing has always been phenomenal. Not only is she “fluent” in those English lyrics, but she plays with the timing, the vowels, and the beat I don’t think it’s possible to play with and interpret lyrics that well if you don’t understand their meaning fully. I know you have too many suggestions for future reactions, so just for your own enjoyment (if not for KZbin) watch Angelina a couple years later give you a completely different interpretation of Summertime with a beautiful, full-on orchestra behind her. As Angelina does so well, she slows the song down to a tempo you’ve not heard before. There’s nowhere to hide any glitch in her vocals, but not to worry-there aren’t any. One of her most beautiful, most unique songs… kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaXad2eqnpanmMU

Four things that (especially) get me about this performance: 1. The _crazy_ amount of emphasis she puts on the "ah" vowel sounds throughout the song (even modifying the "u" vowel in the very first word, "Summertime", to make it resonate the same way as the "ah" part of the "i" diphthong in "-time"). It seems that they have added a little "effect" to her vocal (beyond the usual reverb/"presence" that is commonly added to vocals to prevent them from sounding too "dry") to fully take advantage of that emphasis, so it was clearly a planned thing. What I wonder is, who came up with that idea initially? Because it occurs to me that it makes those "ah" vowels sound "brassy". Get it? Brassy? As in, sounding like a brass instrument - i.e., the trumpet? When this idea struck me "out of the blue" one day - that 8-year-old Angelina might have actually come up with the idea of singing her vocal in a way that would emulate the sound of the trumpet that is accompanying her - well… it sent a shiver down my spine.😳 2. That little look off to the side and smile at 2:46 in this reaction. It looks like she's smiling at someone in the audience (maybe one of "her team", maybe someone else). The idea that she could be so relaxed - so "present" - in this moment (in the middle of her final performance in the competition, being broadcast live on TV) that she would notice someone in the audience and smile at them… that just blows my mind.🤯 3. That little off-mic "ad lib" she does at 3:15 in this reaction. She is echoing an "ad lib" that Louis Armstrong does at the same point in the song in the late-1950s recording he did with Ella Fitzgerald (released on their joint album, _Porgy & Bess_ ). Louis sang something like, "Ooh-bop, don't you say, oh", and Angelina seems to be singing, "Don't you say, no". To me, that "proves" that she was basing this performance on that specific recording of the song, which allows for a close comparison to be made between her vocal and Ella's. (They skipped the verse that Louis sings, although she would sing it in some later live performances of the song.) I won't bother going through the details of that comparison here. Suffice it to say, while she's sticking rather closely to the "general outline" of Ella's vocal arrangement, she's not emulating her tone or "style" at all, really. (Which brings us back to my first point, above. Ella didn't sing it like that at all.) 4. The way she bends the pitch *ever* so slightly as she sings "cry" the second time, at the very end of the song (i.e., the first time she repeats the final line, "Don't you cry" - specifically, at around 3:32 in this reaction). It's so subtle that even I miss it sometimes, and I'm usually listening for it. I'm not talking about her vibrato: I'm talking about something she's doing _in addition to_ the vibrato. It's _crazy_ subtle… (but, I still think, intentional). I used to say this final performance was "optional" for reacters when they went through her run on NGT. After noticing some of these things (especially #3, which enabled a "proper comparison" with "the original"), I relented and started saying all four performances were "must reacts". I still can't quite bring myself to say each performance was better than the one before (because I just can't get over what she did in rounds 2 and 3), but… you know… *mad* respect for what she was able to accomplish here. *Mad* respect. (Even though she won with 46% of the vote in the field of 10 final acts, I still can't help but feel she was robbed…🤪)

Great appreciation! I think you'll find the song choice was all her own. There's a video somewhere of her in rehearsal where she instructs the trumpet player how she wants it played. She also begins another verse (in a deep voice) but obviously they decided to cut that for the final show. Her version here more or less follows Ella Fitzgerald.

A couple things. She looked at the trumpet player as a cue to him. There is a video of her discussing the trumpet role in this song. Second she went to English school so she is fluent in the language. She knows exactly what she is singing. There is an interview with her at five in English. Native speaker fluency.

Great reaction! Also enjoyed your Aurora reaction originally posted under this header. What's in the Norwegian water? Both AJ and Aurora are "perfectionist" singers -- both have amazing voice control and are minimalists in terms of orchestration. BTW AJ looks over at the trumpet player to make sure HE comes in on time. As anyone will tell you, AJ is the boss.

"Ah ha!" No one like her, past or present. What she did at 8 yrs old is "off the charts" and her poise and confidence was very evident. Not a nervous bone in her body when she is on stage performing. She was born to sing and her desire is to make people happy and to touch their hearts with her love. And that she does, very, very well! I liked your analysis. Eventually you will get to the point whereby you just describe what she is doing with one word, the perfect word, "Wow!"

You mention her breathy flutter. An almost toneless waver of breath trailing off at the end of a phrase and gently occupying the (typical) silence in between the phrases. It is one of those little things that adds so much character to a song and is one of the many things she does so so well. I don't know if she just came up with it on her own or if she heard it in the music she listened to as a wee little thing, but perhaps she learned it from one of the best of all time. Have a listen to Louis Armstrong use it in this tune... kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGHMgJ-GrN9jgJI

Primal. She selects her stuff. She knows what she loves to sing and want to sing. This song has a mother section to it. It’s taken out because of time constraints. Great analysis: very insightful! You might want to jump up and fro a little just because you feel like it :-) In many European countries they learn English at a young age. So I would think she knew the basics of the song. It is not a particular difficult story especially since the leaves out the actual second verse (‘One of these mornings, I’m going to wake up singing’ etc). The actual second verse solves a little bit of the difficulty of doing one verse twice. She solved with her instincts and also she follows the version of Ella and Louis to some extend like the high note. Not over-thinking it and just going with the song and enjoying it is a good way to go and I think she does that pretty darn well :-) She is indeed still growing and made incredible jumps at all ages and proves me wrong each time I think she cannot get any better and it is so nice to be wrong :-) I agree we ourselves are a huge brake on our progress. I started learning playing the piano about half a year ago at 50+ and my kids recognize what I am playing. You can do it, it takes time and effort though and these we all want instant gratification it seems.

I had the same thoughts as you till I heard her sing "I'd Rather Go Blind " when she was 11 yrs old, the studio production of "Million Miles" that she wrote and both Adela songs she covered and completely made her own.. Gives these songs a listen and I'd like to hear your response.. Also, I like how you don't interrupt a song every 2 minutes to insert some worthless point...
