This might interest you. She was a big fan of Lous Armstrong at this point. In fact her grandma had a picture of him on the sign she waves to encourage her. Secondly there is very interesting footage before this performance. Alot of people are in a room around a big table and Angelina is stood uncomfortable at the head of the table squirming around about like an 8 year old as they discuss it. Then in a pause in the conversation she turns to the musician who will accompany her and tells him how and where he should come in. The look on everybody's face as this tiny child solves the problem in one tiny little sentence. Its like she morphed before their eyes into something completely different. I think it was around then musicians started affectionately calling her the Boss.

She was FEELING the emotions during "...your daddy's rich...." Also my favorite part of this performance. As for "stage presence", I've seen so many solo vocalists on variety shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, The Perry Como Show, The Dean Martin Show, The Andy Williams Show, etc. who simply stand behind a microphone and sing their hearts out without moving all around. One commenter perfectly described them as being "spotlight singers." Oh, and she's saying "curtain", perhaps because she wasn't at all familiar with how cotton grows at 8 years old (just my "guess"). 🤔
@omarsoliman23556 ай бұрын
Her talent is OUTRAGEOUS!! To pick something very operatic as a closer was a baller choice for her. This is where she shows you what kind of a singer she is. The notes she's hitting and how she chooses to hit them is absolutely EPIC!!!
@fredneecher17466 ай бұрын
I knew she was following the Ella Fitzgerald version, which I know very well, so I was expecting that high note on "your daddy's rich", but what I wasn't expecting was how stunningly smooth and beautiful it was! How is that note so clear and satisfying? Ella also goes there but it isn't the same. Like you and many others, I could listen to that note all day. It is one of the most sublime things I've ever heard.

I seen an interview with the trumpet player. He said he always plays at a 45 degree angle away from angelina cuz she hears any little flaw and stares over at him. He said he has never been so intimidated by a short little 8 year old girl in his life like Angelina. It was pretty funny when we seen her stare over towards him when she heard something wrong ?🤣😂

Glad you liked this one as much as I did. The line (Oh your daddy's rich) you identified as "epic" is the one that makes my heart stop every time I hear it. On the first syllable of "daddy" she ends the note with beautiful vibrato and then does an extremely clean trill on the second syllable. Ykes ... I mean, epic.
@PhilipKnopp6 ай бұрын
Well, that was one hellova reaction and commentary! This performance to me has always been much more than meets the eyes and ears! The "trill" effect you described was unique to this vocal alone. I did not hear it again in subsequent performances. Anyway, thanks for a very complete breakdown of the many aspects of one of the best of Angelina's early works of art. It will stand on its own for many years to come...a mini classic in its own right.

Everything I was going to say about this performance has already been said by previous commenters, so instead, I will mention the trumpet player. I believe he is just a kid himself, I would guess late teens, maybe early 20's who played for her several times when she was 8-9. I don't think he is a "seasoned pro" as you stated, but a very talented young man that I imagine is a seasoned pro by now, 10 years later. I love your in depth videos, so please don't listen to those that say you are doing too much, most "Angels" love it. The next one, What a Difference a Day Makes, is my favorite "Baby Angelina" video ever because she out does Dinah Washington's Grammy winning performance at 8 yo.

Angelina was only given vocal lessons on how to protect her voice and breath control because her very first voice teacher told her parents not to interfere with a god given tone and vibrato instead she was given flute violin piano and guitar lessons. I have always thought that has influenced how she chooses to do runs. Which also ties in with the Holiday influence as she zlso tried to use her voice like a musical instrument.

When she sings the first verse, she's saying, "This is how it's done". Then, when she sang the first verse again, she's saying, "And this is how I do it". She now 'owns' that song. I would love for her to arrange and perform the entire song but life is short and she has so much to keep her busy.

Interesting perspective. See to me, I think it was more (just my opinion)... I think she sat down and mapped out every aspect of the entire arrangement. Aaron, you are a perfect example of what happens to someone when they listen to her sing. She has brought out your absolute best. And it's absolutely amazing that you are critiquing an eight year old girl. In regards to the 'nervousness' conversation, it is impossible for anyone to sing 'Gloomy Sunday (at 7 years old); 'I'm A Fool To Want You' (A CAPPELLA!); 'Bang Bang' (dressed like a Princess); and 'Summertime' (in the style of Ella Fitzgerald), the way she did and be nervous even for a moment. I believe you are equating the fact she MUST have been nervous and then graduated to being more confident as the Show continued song after song because the progression sounded normal. Well, you've already determined she was not normal and let me add this little tidbit; she asked her mom if she could sing on Norway's Got Talent when she was "4 years old!". Her mom told her they don't accept children until they are at least 7 years old. LOOK BACK AT THE GLOOMY SUNDAY VIDEO AND WATCH HER ENTER THE STAGE. SHE WAS READY! AND LOOK AT THE WAY SHE HANDLED THE MIKE WHEN SHE SANG. When asked about the subject she replied by saying she is most comfortable in her life when she is on stage singing for people. Lastly, Aaron, the stage presence matter is interesting. I know what you are suggesting and as you watch her mature I'll be interested to hear what your opinions will be. But, I will say this: She commands the stage with her voice. Listeners are so enthralled with the tone of her voice and the artistry she puts into everything she sings, any movement that distracts the listener from listening to every note is not at all appropriate. Remember, Aaron, as soon as she starts to sing she takes all of us into her world and we don't come out of it until she finishes singing to us the story of the song. And, as you suggested, by the time she was done singing 'Summertime' people fell in love with her and people in the music industry were in total awe of what she was capable of doing. She was truly being recognized as a bona fide superstar in the making. Aaron, I know I've said this before, but I must repeat it again: I CANNOT WAIT TILL YOU HEAR HER SING 'WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES' (Dinah Washington) AT AN OUTDOOR EVENT WITH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. It occurred soon after she won Norway's Got Talent.
@A-AronReacts6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much. In my gloomy Sunday reaction I indicated she didn't seem nervous. But in the I who have nothing performance in the studio, I still believe she was nervous. That's the progression from being (a little bit nervous) to not being nervous to being comfortable to being confident. My belief has nothing to do with being stubborn or anything like that....it has to do with reading her body language and i really do believe she was nervous in that. But I agree with you on Gloomy Sunday....to a point. She wasn't nervous but she definitely didn't have the same level of confidence as she did with Summertime.
@A-AronReacts6 ай бұрын
On stage presence, no doubt she commands the stage. However, much more can be done. Much much more can be done (at least from here). She does command attention and rightfully so. Won't deny that at all. But this isn't a criticism...just room for growth

@@A-AronReacts Aaron, appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Yes, it will be impossible for you to reply and even read many of the "thousands" of comments you will be receiving on a steady basis. I did a podcast with the folks from 'Wrapped In A Warm Blanket' and it got about 150+ comments. I read them all and replied to each one of them and I was exhausted. So I can imagine what happens to you when you wake up in the morning and see another thousand or so comments appear! In regards to the 'I Who Have Nothing' video (when she was 6), could we replace nervousness with anxiousness? Aaron, I treasure your observations and I believe I certainly am not alone in that regard.
@AaronHillyer6 ай бұрын
Thanks again! It is exhausting but.... I'm new and on a new journey. And I'm here to SERVE so I have a lot to learn. It takes work. And the best way to learn is to listen to what is and isn't working, what questions people have, what concerns, what they want to hear, etc. And at this point, I believe the only way to do that is by reading and responding to comments. Unfortunately, it's not sustainable though and have to already pull back. As far as anxious versus nervous, you made me actually go "hmmm" and so I consulted chat gpt and it spit this out: "Anxious" and "nervous" are often used interchangeably, but they have slightly different connotations:Anxious typically refers to a feeling of worry, unease, or nervousness about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Anxiety can also be a clinical diagnosis where the feeling becomes excessive, persistent, and can interfere with daily activities.Nervous is more commonly used to describe a transient state of being on edge or jittery, often about a specific event that’s close at hand, like giving a speech or attending an interview.So, while both terms relate to reactions to stress, "anxious" might suggest a deeper, more prolonged, or more psychological aspect, whereas "nervous" is often more about immediate and situational reactions. --------- So based on the above, I do feel it is more fleeting and situational. That said, I think nervous is appropriate

You might want to consider that you've watched only half a dozen of her videos . Most of us Angels have been watching her for years. She gets excited, but its easy for most people to misconstrue excitement for nerves. Remember, that she's been filmed by her family from birth and after that whoever. By 6 she'd been in front of a camera more than most people have their entire lives. For her, performing front of an audience is no big deal
@A-AronReacts6 ай бұрын
Fair. I'm happy to be wrong but I'm convinced that she was nervous during that recording
@103mrg6 ай бұрын
@@A-AronReacts I agree with you. Here's where I think is the disconnect: She never gets nervous when she PERFORMS; when she's ON STAGE. When you saw her recording IWHN, it was her first time in the STUDIO. We could see she was nervous (and also excited). And we could hear the nervous laughter when she spoke later. But she wasn't performing, or on stage. (BTW, there's another recording of her singing the same song, but on a different day. We don't see the nerves there.) So it boils down to studio first-time vs countless performances (be it shopping malls before NGT, 40k people in Seoul at age 11 or millions watching AGT). Really apples and oranges. Just as a final note: Angelina has been quoted more than once (as recently as February in her "!0 years" video) as saying she never is nervous when she performs. She has also said that the stage is her happy place and she loves to sing. She laughs at the notion of being scared performing in front of so many people because it's all so much fun! (her words)

Angelina did a sublimely beautiful rendintion of Summertime with a full orchestra a few years later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaXad2eqnpanmMUsi=wy2k6_zcHyQPg4za You will find that she she is constantly experimenting with her voice throughout her development. This continues to this day. I love it because you never know what to expect even in songs that she has done many times in performance.

I think her stage presence is perfect. Like most jazz artists, she is into the music, and IT dictates what she is doing on stage. I really hate choreographed performances; making a lot out of nothing. If the music makes you go bananas, it's cool, but if choreography tells you to do it, it's just stupid.

Such a thoughtful reaction! You touch on so many elements that probably are even more meaningful than you can imagine. Angelina worked on the arrangement for this with the musicians, she did indeed have a conversation with the trumpet player! Angelina's grandma recorded a part of that session. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eITQXqKDnLt2pZo As for he vocal trill, perhaps she was influenced by Louis Armstrong - he really knows his way around a trill! As for the context of this rendition. Here we are in 2014, Angelina started to piece together the story that she would publish in 2015. She had met a poor orphan girl in 2012, trying to make a living on the cold wet streets. Angelina got to understand how privileged she was to have a father and mother and to be part of a wealthy family. Her sister Juliette was a new born at the time of the story, this song is like it's being sung to her, as she was often crying... There is an incredible journey for you to make, this song got me completely hooked, the next song simply blew me away, in June 2014 she sang at a festival set amongst a large crowd. Angelina owned the stage, giving Diana Washington a run for her money with a rendition of What a difference a day makes kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnnRnImbrdmih9k

“Your da-ddy’s rich” sounds like four syllables stretched as four dotted notes over 6/8. I’m struggling with just timing the entrance to the phrase and I certainly didn’t play around with tuplets and scales at that age.

@@A-AronReacts no worries, I’m just adding to your point, that it’s just unfathomable when a kid naturally executes what many trained adults struggles with. Since it is the artist that actually makes it swing, not the notes on a score, just like blue notes aren’t as tasteful at an exact chromatic pitch.

Certainly one to enjoy on your own time. I was recorded by Angelina`s grandmother, Mery Zamani, the greatest fan and mentor for Angelina. Other performances at 8 years old: "What a difference A Day Make", "At Last", "I`ll Be There", "What A Wonderful World" (sung at "Save the Children`s piece prize party"). I do hope you`ll be abel to go trough this list and react to them, as they are all such amazingly great performances. Her performance is indeed greatly based on the well known version of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. It is a short song, but to do it completely, it would be too long for a "Got Talent"-show. So they skipped the second verse, which was sung by Mister Armstrong. And reduced the intro trumpet solo to the first line. The middle part in the original from Ella and Louis was also in another key. Angelina would have had to sing in a very low register. She actually did that once (recorded) in Seoul (South Korea). Started in A-minor (Unlike this one, which was in B-minor and not E-minor!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJetZpSkYrCHe8k and It is incredible how low she can sing actually. The Seoul performance is another good example of that. Loved your comment and extra information! The second "Oh your daddy's rich" (with the ninth note of the scale for dad-...) I also consider epic. It's beautiful to see she raises her shoulders to sing it extra gentle! As if she holds and rocks a baby and really sings to it. It is so moving and melancholic! It must have been a miracle to watch her on stage for those who were there!

The story of Porgy and Bess is quite interesting. Gerswin wrote it for black actors and singers. But there were non. And the public was usually white. Would they come ? Who would take risk to produce it ? So it took many years, 1927 to 1935, between the writing and the first performance.
