Talking about lighthouses, went to see the very old 1674 private lighthouse at flamborough head yesterday, near the modern Trinity House one. Never used though, because passing shipping wouldn't pay the expected fees for this commercial venture. Before these early private lighthouses and the formation of Trinity House, there were only ecclesiastical warning lights but they were abruptly halted by Henry 8th after the dissolution, only put right by the foundation of Trinity House by the same rotund fellow in 1514 by Royal charter.

That all depends on what you’re actually trying to do with the van. Our aim is to go to any place we want and park even in the tiniest of spaces. We don’t want to have to use any campsites or make any bookings. So whilst a big van would of course be very comfortable it wouldn’t give us the freedom we have with this tiny little red camper.

Thanks both. You've made the perfect end to the best day I've had in probably about five years. That was such a beautiful and relaxing run through a very picturesque corner of Anglesey. I have been out all evening for the first time in nearly eighteen months with old work colleagues that basically I hadn't seen for nigh on forty years. So I've just watched your latest blog at midnight instead of my usual book at bedtime. I think Carol is extremely tolerant not to chase you round the van after showering her with dust from the mats. If you haven't worked it out already, she's definitely a keeper. When you were a member of the Constabulary, would I be right in assuming you were T division? I know that anyone who was in the job continues to drive the way they were instructed at Hendon or wherever but I know also that those who spent most of their time in traffic manage that with more precision than the rest of us. Your voiceovers often seem to reflect the advanced training instructors methods. And yes as a grade 6 in the HO I had to do the ruddy lot before I was able to take my own pool car out without a chauffeur. Good to get an insight into what using a drone for the vidz entails too.
@LifeistooshortCK3 жыл бұрын
Good to hear you have been out enjoying yourself. Excellent. Never worked on T but did lots of different roles over the years. From the beat, response, CID, then up the greasy pole. I enjoyed my driving course and enjoy using the system of driving still. It keeps me relaxed. A viewer asked me to give driving tips so I am trying it. If everyone drove to the system traffic would flow much easier. I will just pass on the odd bit now and then if the opportunity arises. 👍
@nigeldavey10433 жыл бұрын
@@LifeistooshortCK agreed. I enjoyed the courses immensely back in the day. Especially pursuit and capture avoidance and the skid pan stuff. I think it simulated these days though, not quite so much fun if you know you can't really come a cropper. Civilian driving instruction and test still leaves a lot to be desired though ( says the man who now routinely drives an automatic). 🙂

I met a couple who had been staying there for years!! I turned around at the entrance to PP and they thought I was driving in, I was only asked to pay £1! I don’t think they thought my NV was a camper, possibly as the roof is the same colour as the body? Totally unfair to charge you £5, what if that was your only vehicle? I would have debated this.

There is a real crackdown on campervans in West Wales over the last few years particularly in Ceredigion :(

Crackdown. Those evil lawless camper-van owners who come and spend their money in villages, hamlets and towns. We must remove them. Line them up and shoot them.

Sadly that seems the trend in lots of places around England and Wales. The increase in popularity of motorhomes and campervans because of not being able to travel freely abroad has just made the situation worse 🙁
@YDysgwrAraf3 жыл бұрын
As with anything, regulations and restrictions are brought in to reflect the behaviour of the worst, not the best. Sadly that's the way it has to be. For every respectful leave-no-tracer like Ken and Carol, there is at least one and possibly more someone-else-will-clear-it-upper, and we all have to pay for their freeloading.

We just arrived here today and we was charge £10.00 to park and if we stayed the night another £10.00 when we leave in the morning. That’s a 100 percent increase. Not a bad earner for them. There was no dog waste bins or anywhere to put your rubbish in. Spent 2 hours picking up litter and the amount of dog bags just left lying around. Found a dirty babies nappy also.Come on people just leave footprints

It’s almost like they are running a campsite without providing any services to support it.

Charging campervans more for parking seems to be a trend in Wales. We came across it for the first time this year when we stayed near New Quay. Our VW T6 is only the size of a large estate car, but the charges, when we were graciously allowed to park, were often double. Needless to say that we moved on. So the traders, shopkeepers, restaurant owners etc weren't able to benefit from our custom. We gave Cardigan and New Quay a miss. We did manage to park in Aberystwyth however and made use of the National Trust car parks to visit the coast and beauty spots. I don't object to parking charges but I do object to the blatant discrimination and profiteering. What I wonder do locals do if their only vehicle is a campervan? I must say it took a bit of the shine off the holiday. We'd been to Tewkesbury earlier in the year and not found the same issue.

I had the same reaction to the Penmon Point toll troll too... he seems to have something against people with camper vans; he might do well to be a little more gracious when some-one is handing money over. I won't go there again, there are better places that are free.

We paid the same for the car & if staying over the night, it works out at £10 which is for nothing, given the views & location.

Good show Carol and Ken - I especially likes the tour through Beaumaris and Penmon Point. Odd to hear you comment about "coming out" of the lockdown. In the states, I thought we were as well but now I am not so sure. With a delta variant, those folks not with a shot are catching it and the numbers are up in many, many states. I usually take a mask with me whenever I go out and use it at indoor situations.

it’s the same here in the UK however vast swathes of the population have had one jab and a large number have had two. The way our government keep flip-flopping though is embarrassing.

Trwyn Du = Troin Dee - It literally means black nose, but it's obviously being used figuratively here. Du / Dee is where the family name comes from. Trace the ancestors of the entertainer Jack Dee, for example, and you'll almost certainly eventually come across a dark-haired Welshman.
