Danny, MIlestone games always get shat on by the AAA media. I felt the exact same way about Monster Energy Supercross. I was shopping in Sainsbury's and decided to look up the metascore (it was average at best). Then I decided to take a gamble when I heard about the track editor. And now, it's one of my best games of 2018 so far. As for this, it looks about as close to Sega Rally 4 as we're getting. I'll gladly take that!

ACG cheers, thanks for great review. Got a question: did you notice any particular difference in screen space reflections, car reflections, etc comparing ps4 and pc? I just noticed many devs tend to switch these off on consoles or make them so simple that it looks like 2003 ps2 reflections. Thanks again!

Fun fact. The best Rally Racing game in my opinion was Rallisport Challenge series. I really wish Microsoft would bring that series back. From what I’ve seen of Gravel, it looks to bring back that arcade/sim mix with style to boot.

Nice review. I picked up Gravel. Took a shot. It took me a week to fall in love with this games unique charm and feel. Digging the odd ball line up of vehicles. The cool locations to drive them in. Blazing down the Skeleton Coast in a Ford Raptor is cool as all get out. I like to chill with this game after work. Get some driving in and relax. This game has a very nice learning curve and is highly accessible without being easy. Can't stand racers that kick my ass with the sim like handling. Looking at you Dirt 4. Looking forward to supporting Milestones new I.P. down the stretch. I like choices. I don't want a landscape filled with just Dirt.

I'm gonna be honest, I would genuinely perfer if Devs stopped making these pseudo arcade Sims and just committed to one or the other. I want to drift on top of a giant land turtle dragon, or speeding through a dreamscape while driving a vehicle shaped like a rollerblade. Maybe its just the growing pains of the genre because of the Advent of more complex and in-depth physics engines and near realistic graphics, but. I genuinely miss fantasy racers like WipEout, Sonic Riders, or even burnout with it's over the top driving, they're just so hard to come by now. Regardless I'll probably pick this game up, it seems fairly fun :D

the Burnout guys made two great NFS games, and a lot of the staff got moved over to Ghost, which has put out (in my opinion) one great NFS game (once the bugs got patched) and two bad ones. my favourite was the Midnight Club series. the handling model and the courses (so man tight turns! so much traffic!) in the second one were insane.

Looks decent; still hoping to see an open-world off-road racer... kind of like Burnout: Paradise or Forza Horizon, but centered around off-roading. That way when not racing can zip through the terrain, search for collectibles, and practices jumps/physics/etc. Last time I recall there being something close was Fuel. :P

Looks good, Milestone are pretty consistent and make a lot of stuff that I like: older WRC games, MXGP, SLRE etc. I'll be getting this for sure.

I really like it. I almost wrote it off and passed on it as a budget title. I saw people saying the demo surprised them, so I tried it. Immediately the driving was enjoyable (with all assists off). The graphics are surprising sometimes, on PC at least. On a rainy, overcast track, the glow of the track lights and all the reflections looks better than I've seen in all the other racing games I have. I could imagine on console that maybe it's not worth it, a game with inherent limitations and then running it at a lower framerate with more pop-in. But on PC, it looks good. I miss when there were always a ton of racing games to choose from. This one feels great, reminds me of the original GRID in terms of gameplay feel which even Codemasters didn't manage to get right in the sequel. I've got FH3, NFS Payback, plenty of other stuff, but this game manages to do something that I don't get from those. I came close to not trying it at all, anyone else in a similar spot should at least try the demo.

Two of my favorite car/truck rally racing titles (A riot to play) are still IGN's Colin McRae Rally 3 (2002) and Codemaster's DIRT 2 (2009). This title looks a lot like these kick ass older generation of fun car and truck arcade games with some sim thrown in for good measure. Great review. I just may wait for this one to drop $10-$15, then again maybe not, looks like fun. Thank You!

You all. This game is dope. It's forza on ps4. Imo. Forza horizon 3 is the best fun racer this gen. Gravel is number two. This gen sucks for fighters and racers. They use the internet to rob us with micro transactions and loot shit. It's sad that granturismo 6 on PS3 is a bigger game than the ps4 sport. I don't care they are adding shit it was supposed to have day one. Any fight fans need to support netherealms and race fans need to support this game. This is not budget it fun-get.

Been following Gravel for quite some time, was hoping for a semi arcade Dakar/Baja like game (long distance races over rough, undulating courses), but its gone for the Sega Rally route. Not that is bad, but its not what I was after, shame :( Would love a modern Dakar like game, there are a couple that come close but... more selection is always better.

ACG if it’s running on Unreal Engine 4, HDR should be no issue especially for Xbox. Sea of Thieves and Gears 4 both have HDR implemented beautifully.

When i got the game i did not like it.But then i gave it some hours,and its a very cool game.Its hdr on my xbox x.Both v rally 4 and gravel is much more fun then fh4.For me anyways.Dont forget the new milestone game ride 3.its great:)
