About Tom Nook: It's confirmed by a thing in Wild World (something most players would never see first hand, because of not knowing of the "episodic" series of conversations, that is exclusive to that game, and I'm not misinterpreting with the Able Sisters, who's had a similar way of storytelling in nearly every Animal Crossing game) that Tom Nook is actually showing you mercy. Let me explain: On certain days of the year, you may get a special conversation with special villagers in your town. For Tom Nook, he explains why he patiently waits for you to pay your debt to him, instead of with a deadline like real life does that. The reason being: He hates how cruel the city life can be with needing to pay off a debt for your home costs. So, to do the same, but without the cruelty of a deadline to pay off or you're out, he does give you a debt to pay off, like irl, but he shows mercy to you to not need to worry about not being able to pay off your house debts by a time limit. He will patiently wait however long it may take for you to pay it off, and if he has to pay the price of being seen as the villain, he's willing to take that price for your sake. That episodic mechanic of Wild World also explains Tom Nook's bad history with Crazy Redd, and why he hates him so much. Long ago, Crazy Redd got Tom Nook wrapped up in a "get rich quick" scam. After being the victim of Crazy Redd's scam, he lost everything. And rather than allow his close friend Sable (yes, they are friends from a very long time ago) or anyone else, to aid him in his moment of being in a seriously bad situation, Tom Nook pushed everyone away who wanted to help him. This proves, that Tom Nook is the goodguy of Animal Crossing, and Crazy Redd is evil. And don't let that old Nintendo Power issue's poll of sorts' results fool you, Crazy Redd is NOT the goodguy, nor misunderstood, and Tom Nook is not evil. Rather, the reverse is true. Tom Nook is misunderstood, and Crazy Redd is evil.

12:29 I mean, the name Coco is only in the international versions. Her name in Japanese is Yayoi, the same name as a period in ancient Japanese history around the Ice Age, which is about when the haniwa first started appearing in the archeological record. The localization team probably thought that her face looked enough like a coconut that they just went with a reference more recognizable to a worldwide audience.
@kitifulnines Жыл бұрын
that, and yayoi translates to "new life." this in relation to coco is probably because yayoi in japan is another name for march, which her birthday is in, but I still thought it was a neat detail. oh! there's also the fact that in new leaf, her house felt like some sort of cremation room, further supported by the gyroids in the house AND her house's music being kk dirge
@Mothflutter Жыл бұрын
Honestly I really agree! This is the only thing I think the mark was missed on, Coco even has rings around her head and arms, just like gyroids do - she's just so clearly pottery! Her catchphrase sounding similar to a gyroid with "doyoing" is the last nail in the coffin for me, the only evidence for her being a coconut is her name and the holes in her face, the holes that look the same as a gyroid too. I honestly could not be convinced this girl is just designed to be a coconut 😂

exactly, i love it so much! easily my favourite hourly music in any of the games. i never thought it was creepy either. it makes me think of running through tall grass and flowers, sun setting, perhaps rushing to get somewhere before the sun fully sets. it made sense to me when i realized when nl was the current ac game, that's exactly the feeling i'd have in my mind if i was on at 7 pm: rushing to do an errand for a villager or trying to go to re-tail while dinner was in the oven, wanting to wrap up the game before it was done cooking because i knew i'd forget to play after dinner.

The reason it feels so creepy is because the notes (or tempo) gets faster (quickly too) in a relaxing game with a relaxing instrument, and the music sounds like it’s rushed by a lonely person that is being hunted down.

that clock is ticking feeling is actually trained into us as people to some extent. In many games once you start hitting night time they realize they are running out of time for that day and thus need to rush to get whatever they are doing done. But Also in the real world, night time tends to be winding things down or sometimes rushing a bit to get the day finished first because many people are naturally taught that the night time isn't for really being active at a young age. It's something that gets transferred onto games like animal crossing as well, partly for the genre that it is a part of. it's something not a lot of people are even aware of when it comes to these kinds of feelings.

Coco was indeed inspired after haniwa. In the Japanese version of the game, her name is “Yayoi” which is also the name of a historic era in Japan. Any Japanese would clearly recognize the relationship. Of course, it doesn’t make sense to call her “Yayoi” in the English version because no one would get the reference. I have some feelings about the 7pm song. Keep in mind, these are just my thoughts and aren't based on any like... scientific stuff. xD When I listen to 7pm music, it evoces a feeling of a sky clearing up from rain, calming into a light drizzle. Now, the thing about rain, that people can have both inherent feelings about rain, and feelings based on the context surrounding the rain in the moment. Rain can be a calming, pleasant sound, it's why a lot of 'calming rain sounds to help you sleep' videos exist. Light summer drizzles can be pleasant, especially in the heat of the summer. But rain can also be scary. If you're alone at home with the lights offand with the sound of rain and wind outside, it can be unsettling. Some people just don't like rain in general, as their mood is more sensitive to weather changes. Rain can also have the ability to invoke a sense of 'liminal space' if put in certain scenarios, giving an uneasy feel where otherwise there would be none. So, in conclusion, how you feel about 7pm song might have great overlap of how you'd be feeling about rain in that moment. That's just my theory, anyway. c:

I really need someone to talk about Animal Crossing wild world and how some villagers can apparently go into a “depression” they basically act sick but no matter how much medicine you give them they are still always sick until they eventually “move away”. It is apparently due to clashing personalities of villagers and allegedly you can talk to Nook at a certain time to get special medicine to cure them but idk, I don’t see many people talk about it and I’m so interested in it I had it happen when I was a kid where Lucky was always sick at home and no matter how much medicine I gave him he was always sick, then he moved away and Pate took his place. I played Wild World, it's true that some villagers were still sick for at least a week (or longer) but if you gave them medicine every day, they cured But if they stay that much time sick it's maybe because of depression ? The gyroid face thing is completely intended. The GameCube release had a feature where you could load your character onto a second memory card so you could take it to a friend’s town to visit. i find the new leaf 7pm music thing so interesting lmao personally i love the song but i did always feel like it stood out from the other hourly tracks. and not in a "better than the rest" type of way but more like it almost has a completely different vibe. and because of that it did make the game itself feel different somehow, but i never thought of it as a negative thing. more like the day is winding down type of feel. which i guess sometimes that feeling can be bittersweet. i suppose 7pm is kind of when it gets dark in game too, and when it's dark ~spooky~ things happen LMAO. actually now that i think about it, maybe it's because 7pm is at twilight? which is also a time of day that's considered bittersweet. zelda fans know what i mean lmao. with that in mind, it makes me wonder about wet dry world which is said to have a "negative" aura too. because that could be considered the "twilight" of mario 64, so maybe what people are really feeling is just the bittersweet feeling that the game will be over soon? obviously in animal crossing there is no end lmao but with 7pm being at twilight it just evokes the same feeling on a smaller scale.

i recently got ac new leaf and the first theme i heard was 7pm the piano is what makes it scary in my opinion, it is just the same notes over and over again, like it is anticipating something to happen the other side of the song is really good in my opinion

I used to be terrified of the 7pm music in New Leaf when I was little! I must have been about six or seven, I was so scared I used to hide in my house or other buildings until 8pm so I wouldn’t hear it…I think I remember hiding with Tom Nook in Nook’s Homes until it closed at 8pm since he was (and still is) my favourite, and I felt safe with him. Looking back I actually love the music! It’s very calming. I was just talking about it to my friend yesterday and how we both used to be scared of it! It’s so interesting how lots of other people used to find it unsettling too.

I think the gyroid face is just the placeholder face, other games from that time period, like Final Fantasy 7, also had the "O" mouth placeholder texture. I think the voids are just to be the placeholder texture for positioning the mouth and eyes, and also functionally is a fallback if the face data can't be read properly.

I think the reference to "Night clowns" might be an easter egg by Nintendo of America translators, referencing the "night clown" scare of 2016 where people dressed up as clowns outside buisnesses, parks, etc at night menacingly, to the point that a lot of towns banned clown costumes for the 2016-17 halloween holidays.

Bits and pieces of 7PM remind me of some songs from Yoshi's Story. Particularly Tall Tower and Yoshis in the Wind, I think. These two songs are highly nostalgic to me, and nowadays 7PM is also highly nostalgic to me due to the typical Beetle grind at the Island. I think there's a bit of a lonely vibe to it, since most of my memories of it would be me laying in bed alone and traveling back and forth from the beach to Re-Tail to sell all the bugs and fish from the basket. Sometimes I'd start the grind late and I'd be met with 2 or even 3am which was a warning sign that I should hurry up and sell my stuff (Night Owl Ordinance gang babyy) and go to sleep. I'd also usually be half asleep by this point anyway. Closing times are really smart for a game like this, though, because it did encourage me not to stay up too late (even though 2am is still probably too late). Tangent aside, I think 7PM is more of a relaxing song to me, signifying the end of a day leading to a good night's sleep. I'm not sure I fully understand the eerie factor of it, but I suppose it is a bit of a wonky song with a strange, all-over-the-place sound to it. It was generally 2 and 3 am that had me feeling a bit more uneasy.

Hey, I think you should google what a Dirge is (pronounced Dur and a g sound like giraffe). It is a lament for the dead. A sad, hard, dark song. It's not just a weird song with a weird name.

The 7 o'clock music was unsettling to me... at least the piano part was (the rest of the music was fine) I thought I was the only one lol and I've watched the Densle series, and I LOVE it!! I forget what the newest episode was when I first found it, but it was early on (it might've been 3 or 4- depending on what episode 3 and episode 4 are lol)

Maybe, Lucky is just a cosplayer. Also, i think i have figured out the definition of “Night clowns”. It’s a metaphor. It means: “A group of people joking around and talking, at a late night.” Hope this makes sense

dirge is pronounced with a soft g. "dirj" kapp'n also talks about cucumbers all the time, which is a favourite food of kappas. it isn't just a visual similarity. also kappas are not simply tricksters, they are thought to drown people, assault people, and eat human flesh, and, yes, kidnap children. the gyroid face in population growing doesnt have anything to do with resetting the game or corrupted data. when you go to a new town your character data is copied to the memory card in the other slot, and the game saves and ends. if you then try to load your game back up with the other memory card removed (or with the data wiped), rather than preventing you from playing, the game loads you up with a completely blank version of your character, all items and money and letters gone and, as a funny little goof, your face is gyroid-ified. this was noted in the japanese strategy guide as well as nintendo power magazine. there is absolutely no universe in which this could possibly be anything other than intended behaviour. e: coco is not based off of a coconut. her name in the original version is yayoi. i'm starting to think you haven't researched this video very well.

i just happen to have both lucky and walker on my island lol, i had no idea there was some conspiracy around them. they’re both really sweet but also they have basically the exact same lines with a few minor differences, so in the future i might boot one of them in the interest of not having two of (basically) the same villagers

In regards to Kapp'n and Kappa. the modern idea of Kappa being innocent pranksters is a very recent and sanitized version of them, traditionally, while some could be more innocent, they were known for abducting people, either to kill them or to steal their Soul Gem, which, incidentally was located inside the rectum.

The 7pm theme kind of sounded like a soothing song with a horror music sound track played in the background. Something about it reminded me of the high pitched strings that some horror movies use.

To add to the purgatory or afterlife theory, I would like to point out that the game is called “animal crossing” which is a sign to warn drivers of animals to avoid… roadkill. In New Horizons, extinct animals (Dodos) act as psychopomps, transporting the dead to the paradise setting of ACNH. Many of the villager types are either common roadkill victims or endangered, and the special villagers are supernatural “between-world” creatures like kappa and tanuki, or the holiday spirits and Wisp. The haniwa spring to life as they are activated in the afterlife where you reside. Your mom could be potentially visiting your grave in the form of letters, saying how she misses you and what she has been up to. As for HHP, you are literally being hired to design personal heavens or “home paradises”… for the deceased. As for Gulliver, I interpret his washing ashore to be him having a “run-in with death” as he continuously falls into the sea from his ship. Resetti is a mole. Moles dig underground, where coincidentally many believe the “underworld” resides. An aspect, or a few, that is more “reachy” that I could note is the museum perhaps being a symbol of “all questions being answered through death”. Harv’s Island also seems lost in time because, well, there is no aging when you are a spirit. 60s hippies like Harv and Harriet (whom he probably met in the afterlife) can roam freely as they never lived to see times change. Reese and Cyrus’ love story involves an accident and a hospital trip, Tortimer is elderly and probably passed naturally, Redd has many enemies… Fortune tellers are known to have a special connection with “the other side”, as Katrina may represent. I’m probably just going to make a Reddit post about this atp, but I definitely believe a lot of the afterlife (dare I say, CROSSING over…) imagery is absolutely intentional though.
