Animated Map Tutorial in Apple Motion

A step by step walk through of how I create animated paths for road trip videos that follow our routes. It's a quick and easy process in Apple Motion. I also add in some icons and show two different ways to animate camera movement for extra flair as a bonus tip.

Thank you for sharing this. Would you happen to know whether an animated path can be made from an SVG in Apple Motion? I've been searching KZbin for an answer but haven't found one yet. I have a pre-existing SVG that's just a connected set of lines, and I want to animate it. I assumed there would be a way. Many thanks in advance if you can help, or point me to a resource that can help!

@@InsidesAndOutsides I'm not 100% sure this will help, but here are a couple quick videos from the Ripple Training guys on a way to bring in vector graphics ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoOQdGh_ptepoLc ) and using image masks to 'write on' shapes or text in Motion ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH6qh6R7mbpjpdE ). This is the first idea I've had, so I'll follow up if I find something better. The question will be if you can turn your SVG into a .ai or .pdf format. It would only bring your elements in as a graphic though, and I'm assuming you want a way to interact with the points in your lines within Motion without having to redraw them. I'll play around with it more and see what I can come up with.

I don't think either of those videos quite gives me what I need, as you probably guessed, but it's very nice of you to try to help. I'm starting to think that the most bulletproof (but tedious) method will be to export a large number of PNG files made from the SVG from my graphics software (I use an old app called Graphic, formerly idraw), each with a different stage of progress, and then simply render them as frames in an animation...

@@brianriebedriveselectric This morning I was looking around in Motion and I found that there's a behaviour called "Write On", which progressively draws an outline. If I can get it to work with my SVG (or something I've exported from it), then I think that might be the answer. I thought I'd let you know!

Thank You for this Fantastic tutorial!! I would love to do some of these types of map animation from some trips I made. In addition to what you have done here, is it possible to add drop zones along the way for video of certain stops that I took along the way? That would be awesome.... I'm asking because I haven't seen anyone do a tutorial for that. Thanks again for teaching me this map animation!! 👍😊

Thanks! You can add drop zones in by selecting Object in the top menu and New Drop Zone. You should be able to modify that like any other clip as a place holder, and I believe you can also publish that to FCPX so you can add the clips in Final Cut. It's been a while since I used drop zones in a project, but I think that's correct. If you're just staying in Motion, and you know what clips you're going to use, you could just import those directly too. Check out @RippleTraining for more in-depth tutorials, that's where I learned most of my Motion techniques. Best of luck!

Yeah, there may be other software options that could do it. It’s pretty basic. There’s always Adobe After Effects, but that’s expensive and way overkill for most things.

Rather than retracing the Bezier path, is it possible to bring in a GPX or KML file and convert it to a Bezier Line?

I’m not sure, I’ve just recently started using KMLs for another project, but that’s in Google Earth Studio. Maybe if you could bring the map and path in together. As far as I know Motion wouldn’t recognize the file as a map element. Worth some testing though, I’ll look into it. Thanks for watching!

Glad you enjoyed it! Motion is a huge value for all of the things you can do with it, and like this, you can do a lot of stuff with realtime playback and quick export times. You can also make custom titles and generators for Final Cut, which comes in handy.
