Looking at the comments, I can't believe that people aren't getting that this story is a joke. You'd think that the line about how they can only see 48 minutes into the future (not counting commercials), would be a dead giveaway. Maybe this should have been titled "Why Stories About Psychics Don't Work".
@imkluu4 жыл бұрын
I completely understood the joke, but it is still not very Federation like to do what they did. It would have been more in character to open hailing frequencies and tell them, "We know your plan and how many are aboard. We have the capability of destroying your ship with one burst of our weapons. Surrender now and you will be transported to the proper authorities, alive, anything else will be counted as an hostile act and dealt with accordingly."

This video is a brand new story, with new animation, new dialogue that reuses some elements from the Animated STAR TREK series that aired on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1974. Clearly, this short film is presented with tongue firmly planted in cheek. It was not intended to be serious. It is a classic shaggy-dog story with the requisite long build-up to the joke's punch line. Part of the fun was that she talks so long that the bridge crew can only react to what she says. It is also a parody of the much-maligned limited animation technique where most of the story is conveyed with dialogue and little or no action. In reality, Kirk clearly would not destroy the ship after learning the future events, he would beam aboard a security team to commandeer the ship and then escort it back to the nearest Federation base. I just figured I'd have some fun with the short since it was only a proof-of-concept.

@KenLieck Жыл бұрын
Assuming that you're talking about the original Star Trek animated series episodes, there were also books issued compiling the authors' actual intended versions of the tales, with greater exposition to provide a more full story as well as anything that was left out of the cartoons due to some element of it being considered unsuitable for 3 to 4-year-olds. So if you were to use the existing voice tracks as a template to teach AI -- or even some top of the line human voice actors perhaps -- you could then expand the storyline to fill a full 1 hour time slot and then animate that with your recommended CGI animation (although my own personal preference would be to produce them as high quality computer-assisted 2D cel cartoons). Presto Klingo! You've got yourself loads of brand new episodes of the original Star Trek series, written by the original Star Trek writers, coming from the decade they were made in originally!!! Now isn't *that* an original idea?!?

No gunplay, no tragic loss of ambassadorial or federation life, and a better, happier ending. To say nothing of the reduced production costs in trading all that stunt work and visual effects for 130 seconds of monologue. They could shoot and produce this in a single day! I'm sure the unions will file objections to the presence of Pentarans in any future episodes. Mr. Danhauser may even find himself the target of a civil action. @@CHDanhauser First, congratulations on completion. I think I agree with some of your other critics that the outcome (and the ambassador's story) was too grim to be taken lightheartedly. On re-watching, it looks like you altered the characters' personalities (Spock's "forty-eight minutes" is weirdly false; Kirk's decision to destroy the vessel) instead of remaining canon or exaggerating them for satire, and I found that jarring. Without an anchor to expectations, I can only compare it to itself, and I find it cruel. I hope you do more writing in the future, as you seem to have the back-end process down.

The scripts were generated solely for the animated series ("TAS), which ran in 1973-1974. They were not rejected or unused scripts from the live action series. In addition to the fact that TAS used many of the same writers from the original series ("TOS"), the animateds also had several direct sequels to TOS episodes, including a story involving the Tribbles and an episode with Harry Mudd. Story elements from the TAS episode "Yesteryear" were used for live action episodes of the series "Enterprise" some 30 years later and also in the 2009 reboot film from JJ Abrams.

48 minutes into the future? Why not 47? And what about having a Betazoid on the bridge? 🤣🤣 But seriously, if this story were not a joke I'd say it's a perfect example of why having full psychics as regular characters is usually a really bad idea.
@CHDanhauser4 жыл бұрын
I used 48 because it is just short of the 50 minute length of the original series episodes when they first aired in the mid-1960s. Regarding precogs, you are correct. When Gene Roddenberry was first fleshing out the concept behind STAR TREK he stated that he did not want his science fiction show to feature robots or psychic phenomenon like mind readers or precognitives. This story was an explicit depiction of what would happen if psychic aliens were to be seen on STAR TREK. Gene didn't want psychics in STAR TREK because it made storytelling very difficult. What jeapordy could the crew find itself in if their resident precog could just tell them what dangers lay around each corner? By the way, Gene's admonition against robots obviously did not include androids.
@shibolinemress89134 жыл бұрын
@@CHDanhauser My thoughts exactly! A fully psychic character would be very difficult to write for, for all the reasons you mentioned. Spock's mind-meld was as far as they went with the regular cast. Babylon 5 did better with the PsyCorps, but Trek seemed to always struggle with psychic characters, even after Roddenberry. Concerning androids, in TOS they usually self-destructed when they developed emotions, or Kirk and crew talked them to death. The same went for supercomputers. TNG's Data was a rare exception, and even he had programmed limitations. Not till VOY did an AI in form of the Doctor begin to really become human imo.
