One thing that I always liked about behind-the-scenes for 2-D animated films, or even back when you watched the first trailers in theaters or vhs tapes, was seeing the unfinished animation and I found it charming and cool! Nowadays for 3-D films you really couldn't show "unfinished animation" in trailers without it looking creepy or life-less. (I guess there could be some exceptions, but it would be nearly finished compared to the line-drawings and sketches and shadows that are the bare bones for 2-D animation.)But for unfinished 2-D animation you can still see the life in the pictures even before all the details are added....Again it's charming and nostalgic. ^_^

I agree that the bashing on 3d animations is unfair. I have a problem with the fact that they got rid of the cartoony nature that was a perfect blend of human expression and real life animals. With realistic animation you don't get that same feeling of charicter. You cant tell the diffrent personalities of two lions with one look. Thats what 2D animation takes advantage of. It uses small things like the shape of the hair/head or simply the eyebrows to add charicter and expression. This is not the type of movie that needs to be animated in CGI. If you want nostalgia just rewatch the movie

"an actor with a pencil" That's exactly how I see myself, so I don't find it boring at all, in fact, it's great because you're not limited by what a prop department can build or what costumes and makeup are available, so you can really make the character you're drawing look like anything, and you can put in brilliant special effects that can never be done in real life or even in CGI (well, CGI you probably could, but you might run into quite a few hurdles due to the amount of RAM and stuff)

Animators always draw their characters based on the Actors; they do that after recording is complete. An Animator will go through the video tape takes and base the movement and face features based on that.

Not all animators. Some of them use the actors for reference, but I've heard other animators will specifically NOT do that so that the voice actor doesn't influence how they might design the character since the two are not the same.

The audio is the first thing Disney is doing after the story has been selected and a script has been written. Once Audio recording is complete then the artists start working on their character designs finally animating them.

And it's like, I appreciate what they're trying to do, bring back an animated classic for the modern generation, but why fix something that's not broken you know? @@FTIBug Totally agree with you! There's a certain magic to animated movies that CGI fails to capture. But vice versa, CGI also manages to create more expansive and vivid worlds with lifelike graphics as opposed to handdrawn animations. Honestly, the live action remake COULD've been really great, I just think whoever directed it simply failed to do so. Animated cartoons nowadays use cheap tricks to simplify their workflow, and while some manage to still keep the animation fluid and good, most seem to fail. If you want real animated content, try watching well-animated animes, or anime movies. And yes, especially Makoto Shinkai movies (Your name, Weathering with You), they all make 2D animation shine really well!

Most of movies are not so ... how to say... wild I mean they show us life of lions and others animals in the movie so perfect, they did a lot of work learning everything about lions. This is why I loved Disney's animations. I normally value story over animation, so Pixar was always my go to studio, and any (typically indi) movies that strive to be art from a writing standpoint, but I can't help but gush at the musical theatre like movements. It's funny how even though they don't have to exaggerate movement because everyone could clearly see the scenes they picked and chose to be where, but they make a decision, that with their creative art form, they would strive for what can't be accomplished with any other medium as easily as hand-drawn animation. I also believe the best part about it is just how you can see the artists going to town and having _fun_ with what they're doing. And I guess it's easy to have fun with it too, because they believe in the story, character, premise, ect-plus they'd be getting pretty good pay! Since animation is the most notable feature in these films.

I look back on films like The Lion King and Aladdin, and remember that these animators were my heroes as a kid. While animation wasn't my thing (I never had a knack for it, but I tell my stories through comics), I still consider these men and women to be my heroes. I wish that I could meet at least one of them and watch them draw even for a short time, because that would probably be the most inspiring thing in my life.

By the time Bob Igor reigned over Disney, that's exactly what happened. Many of these people went out of jobs from one day the the next. The Disney studios fired hundreds of hand drawing animators in the early 2000s. When John Lasseter (one of Toy Story's creators) took a big part in the company around 2007, he rehired many of them. They went on to work on the Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh, which I believe were the studio's last hand drawn features. Ironically, John Lasseter, was a main force in the move to 3D animation. Yet he wanted to keep hand drawn alive. He appreciated and saw worth in the traditional form. He said there is still use for it and wanted to blend the two in future films. That didn't come to pass though because the studio has pretty much thrown all hand drawn feature projects out the window. A present day example of a hand drawn film that uses computer animation elements is Klaus. Disney doesn't want to go there though. Hand drawn animation is more time consuming (among other things) and the fact that the Pooh movie didn't rack up even a quarter of the sales compared to their 3D counterpart that year meant death to their traditional animators.

@@paulipaz Thank you for sharing this! Sadly, a lot of life has left Disney works since Lasseter isn't there anymore. As for 2D, ironically hand-drawn animation takes just about the same time as CG animation if you see the modern budgets. Some of those CG movies Disney is making are starting to become unbelievably expensive. And, because of modern technology--it's actually cheaper than CG animation, too (CG costs about $10,000-200,000 per minute, while 2D costs about $3,000-50,000 per minute). All things go in circles. CG will be popular for a while, then when all movies are CG (like now), 2D will slowly start to reappear and stand out more (just like Klaus and Spiderman: In the the Spiderverse--both award winning and very well received by audiences), and so people will switch back to animating 2D more often, and then after some time they'll get bored again and go back to CG--and back and forth.

@marneebox In hand drawn animation the animated characters are drawn and coloured on clear pages called cels, one cel per frame, twenty four frames per second, and these are placed over the painted background one frame at a time and then photographed to produce an animated sequence. The background painting doesn't change unless the 'camera' pans or tilts, and then they just paint the background bigger than what's needed for the shot and they crop out what they need.

Sure, powerful computers and softwares make it easier to visualize an idea, a scene - but the amount of research, sketches, storyboarding...and then the manual adjustments to make the characters look alive, not some stiff, plastic dolls like in that Cloudy and Meatballs shit - are also staggering, and it takes talent and dedication as well. It takes a lot of work to get in Disney or Pixar. You need to submit a portfolio full of your best art, and if you animate shorts you can enter them in animation festivals for awards, Disney pays attention to these. But you can't only draw animals, it's much more than that. You need to draw from life, meaning realistic animals, places outside, people, random objects and much more. You need to know anatomy for humans and animals, you also need to know stretch and squash. There is much more but these are some of the basics, basically you need to know how to animate and draw. You already have a graphics tablet, and are pretty comfortable in digital medium. Like Faullks was saying, life is your best reference; also Dont forsake traditional mediums, for there are ranges of expressions you can get from that you cant get from digital art that are worth exploring: pressure sensitivity levels and versus infinite sensitivity and instant tactile connection with traditional mediums, pen to tablet approximation vs the immediacy of traditional mediums, line and gestural control that you get with practice on paper: all nuances that translate wonderfully into other mediums such as digital!
