Maybe the feeling of being special and being part of a uncommon group can be relatable to ones but not to others, but what really brings me down is that, when a product (anime shows) is popular, the companies will exploit it. Every time i feel the shows are coming with less quality and less love from the production team (with one or two expections). Its not about "I want to make this idea into anime" anymore, but instead "I need to do an anime before the deadline"

Well considering most anime isn't actually made in Japan but is marketed by the Japanese has a Lot to do with that.

As someone who only dabbles in animation, ive had that thought for a long time. "Whats happening to anime?" Im not trying to make fun or trash talk it, because I watched it. But no matter what I had the feeling of Shippuden shouldve been better, but those deadlines keep something about art in check. This is just my opinion, but I dont know when it would have started or what companies maybe made it popular?
@gubx426 жыл бұрын
I found that quality has improved over the years in pretty much every aspect, including "love" from the production team. We are the ones with less love, maybe because of the reasons pointed in the video, or maybe just because we grew older. Anime has always been about commercial exploitation. It may be a work of love for the artists involved, but there have always been deadlines, market research and executive meddling.

The more mainstream anime gets, the more people will try harder being part of that community and conversation. Although it shouldn't necessarily be like that, it can't really be helped because thats just how most of the things today are.
@untappedhappiness6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s so crazy now. I remember I was in a group conversation and all but one of us happened to watch anime and we were going on and on about shows. The person who doesn’t really watch anime was joining in and interjecting where she could about really mainstream shows she’d heard of like Naruto, DBZ and Pokémon. It honestly reminded me a lot of what has happened to comic books and superheroes. Niches are dominating the conversation in ways that were pretty unheard of just a decade prior.

I recently gave up watching seasonal anime altogether. The constant "I'm behind on all my shows" made anime feel more like a chore than a hobby and it started stressing me out. I always enjoyed watching what was fresh and new but I got to the point where I had to go and turn back. Here's the thing though. The community forgets anime quickly after they finish airing. But people don't. If you see an anime that hits you in the right places, you don't forget it, nobody does. I know people still obsessed with Re:Zero, or those who can't let Flip Flappers go, the Kill la Kill vs TTGL discussion still pops up regularly, I can still rant endlessly about how Madoka is a masterpiece, and even after what, 20 years? Cowboy Bebop is a title that still gets the same friendly reactions. We don't forget. It's not being talked about as much, but we don't forget. Don't talk to the community. Talk to people. Our beloved shows haven't been forgotten yet.

Then I come to youtube to see if anyone EVER uploaded a gush about it.

I really don't like the new "if it's not currently airing, who cares" mentality. I'm glad anime is getting popular but it would be nice if we could slow down and truly appreciate the artform at a more comfortable speed. Movies and games are much more easier to follow(more breathing space), yet they still have alot of fun things to play/watch. Y'know, walk and smell the roses, these days we just run though the rose bush with anime.

Not just anime. Nerd culture in general feels this way to me. If it isn't current and popular then no one cares about it. Actually you probably do and just don't know it. I've watched anime since about 2003 and haven't told a single person I know IRL. I've briefly discussed it in cellphone games and private facebook groups. If I can keep it secret for 15 years so could other people you know. But I'm a little different and don't feel the need to discuss it much. It is a little frustrating that I have to work to hide it at times. I just enjoy getting immersed in it. I usually know if I like a show in the first episode and there's enough selection where I don't often run out of shows to watch. It's perfect for me.

I have also never told one of my irl friends that i watch anime. I think a lot of people are like this. Anime is still considered strange by society so i just never talk about it irl.
@lasergames17986 жыл бұрын
haha to be fair some if it is quite strange. But I still love it. I prefer the OP characters or mixing of worlds/cultures. Bleach, Gate, Gun Girl, How to Summon a demon lord, Mushishi, One Punch Man, my hero academia, overlord, mob pyscho, kitchen of another world, death march, in another world with my cellphone. There's lots of good ones out there and so much variety that anyone could find something they like. I think people unfairly associate it with being childish just because it's drawn like kids cartoons.
@microhomebrew5 жыл бұрын
I remember when I was in high-school, and anime was my obsession (watching 1-3 12 episode series every gods damned day), I consumed and consumed like I was getting payed for it. After realizing that forcing myself to watch mediocre and crap shows just to sate my completionist attitude was a waste of time. I realized around 10 years ago, that I could just watch what I knew I would like, and that I could drop anything I don't like. Eventually I just found other things to do, but I'm finally getting back into it again now! Anyway, I just wanted to say that being a part of the community and discussion... was NEVER, and is not now, a priority for me. It's not even something that ever crossed my mind. I don't really care what people think about the anime I do and don't like, and I don't care if other people know what I have to say. It's a medium for storytelling and art, and I'll just keep enjoying it the way I always have... mostly in silence.

I'm so glad somebody wrote this comment. I'm 30 now and I was never very social. Anime meant something special when I got into it and it is still something special to me, no matter how mainstream or popular it gets. I didn't make friends thanks to it, and I never really tried or felt the need to be part of the "anime community", although I had a blog which was tangentially related to discussing the fandom and other edgy stuff, and I was active on a TV station's forum while it lasted. That TV station got me into this in 2005. While I haven't found myself in the mood to watch anime in the past several years (although recently I have watched a couple things), and I stopped going to cons long years ago, I still feel like anime as a phenomenon is still something dear to me. I feel alienated looking at today's fandom, looking at how it is all about community this and community that, all this superficial chitchat. Discord servers chock full of anime memes used by everyone, 16 year old girls wearing ahegao T-shirts at cons and doing ahegaos for donations online. Speaking of cons, there aren't any anime cons anymore, nobody really cares about the country behind anime, which we cared about back then. Now anime is just another consumer product to reap profits with and write reviews about. I get that it is inevitable that the anime industry will spread out and the audience will be less homogeneous, and that the term "anime fan" will loose its meaning. But I feel like it won't change me and my relationship with this part of popular culture.

It's sad that there are people who only watch anime now to be apart of a trend/movement and "keep up" with the latest shows, everyone should enjoy it for the stories, messages and fun the creators are trying to convey, so that the audience feel something on an emotional level, so it feels real. lowering anime to just another thing to consume is sad and insulting. i know this is probably a small percentage compared to people who care about the shows but still it's kinda sad.

I actually subscribed to your channel because of this video. I turn 40 this year and have been an anime fan for about 27 years now, so I had to chuckle at talking about how niche a community this was even 10 years ago lol. I remember finding anime in a store period was insane and finding series outside of Macross was almost unheard of. Things like SciFi channels anime week were amazing chances to see “new” anime. Vampire Hunter D, Lens Men, Akira, and Demon City Sinzuku were amazing treats as well as the original bubble crisis. Watching this community grow has warmed my heart but also made me cringe at the almost mindless way people look at and consume anime. Anyway keep up your observations, I find them interesting and often insightful.

I'm 36 years old. I've been watching anime for.... far too long. I understand where you're coming from with this and I have to tell you, I went through this change you speak of in the mid to late 2000's when I realized that the majority of anime I was seeing that was considered "popular" all started to look the same and be generally about the same subject matter. The content outputting in this regard was massive then and it's only gotten more massive since leading up all the way to today. I quickly discovered that I should stop trying to consume all that I could (around about 2005), and I was certainly trying to do just that, and instead just find shows that I enjoy. The landscape at the time in the mid 2000's required torrenting of course, and finding shows was relatively easy as I found that sticking with a few groups that had the same general tastes as I would regularly put out great content and decent shows I enjoyed. Now though, I'm a subscriber to Crunchy Roll and have been for about a decade now. I'm a subscriber to Funimation. I even subscribed to amazons Anime Strike when it was a thing. There are more that I've subscribed to in the past but those are what I would consider the "major ones." The one thing I'll say that is fantastic about the massive amount of content that is available these days, is that it's now easier than ever to find something you'll enjoy. Not all anime fans enjoy all anime. I personally can't stand certain slice of life anime and I'm really tired of the million or so "school" flavored shows that I see come out every year. Maybe if I haven't been seeing these various school themed shows for the nearly past two decades being spewed out by the industry in every form or fashion that they can come up with, I might not be so jaded by it. And that's not to say I don't enjoy the occasional school anime. I do. And what IS good about there being so many is that I might find one or two I enjoy. Just as you said in this video, Anime is not a one trick pony. Where I will vehemently disagree with you on, however, is that no anime fan has ever fully agreed with one another on all the anime they have watched, and all have their own tastes. You may not have said this outright but you hinted at there being a time where anime fans just enjoyed each others company when they found someone with the same interests and the times were simpler. Anime fans may have consumed everything they could in the past, and finding someone else who enjoyed anime enjoyed meeting another who did as well. But trust me when I tell you that the opinions of those anime fans are strong, and they may agree on nothing. One may love Hand Maid Mai, but detest Evangelion. Another may love Record of Lodoss War, but detest Basilisk and yet love Beck. This is divisive, and goes back since anime first made it's way into the west. It's not, however, necessarily a bad thing. Either way, I highly recommend enjoying the anime you like. Enjoy it for the art that it is, and the stories that you find engrossing. Don't do it to "chat about it." Don't do it to "be a part of the community." You ARE part of the community. You watch anime. That hasn't and more than likely will never change, regardless of how popular anime becomes. Watch what you want, and pay no attention to those who say what you SHOULD be watching in a negative way. Sorry for the length of my response, but your video, which is fantastic BTW, certainly made me want to respond. Keep up the good work Gigguk.

I honestly dont believe you outgrow it. I'm 24 now and the last time I watched anime was today but before that its been 7 years. I used to watch it all the time during school but I was around 16 years old back then. I started rewatching some animes I finished back then and Im having a blast. The only thing that's changed for me though is that everyone in the anime is young and back then I could relate to it a whole lot more. Being an adult now there are many scenarios that just dont apply to me anymore but they still hit me the same because there's this young kiddo lingering inside me that just wont let go.

... this hit me harder than I thought it would... You summed up not only my thoughts on anime as it is today but a good part of my life in that opening section It feels surreal that I have been in this community for so long being only 19 as is, looking at how it's changed and everything, what you mentioned is probably the exact reason why my anime consuming habits has changed, where I used to watch anything and everything til the end to watching a select number before dropping most of them and watching a select few All of this started out of a love from pokemon...
@Gollum19056 жыл бұрын
I feel like this for a few years now... It really makes me sad this perception of anime keeps growing and spreading upon our community. Thanks for bringing up this topic, bc I feel like a lot of new fans don't even realise what it means to be an actual anime fan. It's all about having fun. I don't care if you watched 700 anime in the last 2 years compared to my 300 anime in 10 years. All I did was having fun with my hobby and fanboying about stuff I really thought- and still think- were great. I think this also goes hand in hand with the topic you touched on a few months back in "We accepted mediocracy". Mainstream is a mass, that just likes to consume. They'll talk about anything recent, instead of putting in the time to find a good anime that's worth their time. It's nice to have so many people talk about anime, but it saddens me to see people caring less and less about the genre itself, which is also a reason for the loss in quality in my opinion.
@Gollum19056 жыл бұрын
UgandaKnuckles you don't get my point. It's not that anime now is worse than before. I'm talking about the anime community itself. I'm really nitpicky when it comes to shows I wanna watch and that's the reason I only watched "so few" compared to others. That's what really bothers me. See you're exactly showcasing what I was talking about. Why do I have to argue with you on why I have apparently not the skill to pick up good anime? Why are you segmenting the anime genre into seasons or specific epoches like it is with literature? I'm not an advocate for old anime or want to sound like an oldfag preaching of the "good days". My whole point is our community is becoming dull as it's forced to absorb as much mainstream as possible bc it generates more money. I know this sounds edgy but anime was appealing to me bc it was so different from anything else i've seen before, but a lot of that magic faded away as time passed. This is not only bc i've gotten older but also bc of the anime community evolving and spreading in the West. I still watch BNHA, Steins Gate 0, Tokyo Ghoul:Re and read Goblin Slayer, Berserk and some random ass manga, but its an undeniable fact anime has another target audience and doesn't have the same focus it had several years ago.

It used to be that I could use "anime" as a filter for finding people who were somewhat similar to me. Now it's grown to such a point where I feel overwhelmed and feel nostalgic for simpler times. It's sort of similar to what happened with the internet. Before social media took off, the people you found on it were of a certain type and it was easier to work your way through to find a group of people (back when there used to be communities and web forums and chatrooms) After social media hit though, most of those places died off and the internet became less of a place where you could easily find that person similar to you. While both becoming less niche definitely have their positives (and I wouldn't go back even if we could) I still wish there was an easier way to wade through it all to carve some niches again where people could easily find one another. Rather than simply part of millions/billions of others like it is right now.

Yeah, like he said in the video, it used to be that if you ran into someone who was an anime fan you were pretty much guaranteed to have some sort of common ground. Now though, with such a broader range of options, it can be hard to find people to talk to about it. I have several friends that are anime fans but I'm hesitant to talk to them about some shows due to judgement. I ended up going to reddit just for this reason. Ikr, I've never been a big anime fan, I often thought that a lot of the community gave more praise than most shows deserve and I feel nowadays this may really be true. While it's nice to see it gain more mass appeal moste new shows are painfully mediocre or downright bad, mixed with a couple of shows that exceed in certain categories but fail in other vital parts. While it's easier to find something that's suits your tast there's only a couple of anmies that I can objectively call good and even allot of what people may considers to be modern masterpieces is really forgettable in the long therm. To cut it short anime finally caught up to the rest of mainstream media.

@@Mohamed_Bendjiar The entire reason anime was good in the first place is because it wasn't mainstream. Writers/mangakas actually cared about the stories they told back then. Look at Cowboy Bebop: to this day it still hasn't been beaten. Now that anime is mainstream studios are pumping out ANY and everything no matter the quality, thus resulting in a polluted oversaturation of recycled mediocrity that births further seasonal recycled mediocrity. Originality is a thing of the past. Everyone simply hops on whatever's mainstream, copies the exact same tropes, and beat that horse until its dead. Creators have become comfortable with this formula because it makes them money...because they fear using their brains to come up with their own ideas. Why come up with something new when you can have a high-school boy teleported into a video-game-like world and make bank? Why create realistic female characters when you can just make them tsunderes or kuuderes and call it a day? Why come up with unique designs when you can give your MC the "Kirito" look? It's gotten so bad I can instantly identify a character's ENTIRE personality based on their design alone. Spike or Faye's designs don't tell you a thing about their characters. How many more generic isekai's, "misfits" in high school, demon lords, forced sequels, harems, etc do we need before anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo can start getting made again? The most recent gem I can think of (that was a step in the right direction) is Great Pretender.

I agree, I used to be a huge anime fan, as mentioned I watched all the classics, was an active member of the community as well. But over the course of the last few years, I find that with so much anime coming out and the few and far between ones that match my preferences has alienated me from the community I grew up in. So often I will go to an anime site or subreddit and have no clue what everyone is talking about because they are shows I never had interest in. Due to this I now wait until the end of the year, check the reviews on shows and binge watch them all, never talking to those communities because I am out of the loop now.

This happens to any industry when they are big enough to a certain point. Just look at hundreds of movies or video games coming out each year, most of them mediocre and similar to each other, only a handful of them would be worth remembering. We were so used to the fact that every anime that we watched are interesting or at least weird. It wasn't because anime become objectively worse, but because we have better access to all of anime, including all the generic stuff that wouldn't see the light of day if it was in the past. We have to accept the fact that anime, while becoming a bigger industry, would become more like any other medium and less like a big community where everyone is on the same page.

I agree. I was forced into becoming a casual viewer who can only watch a few episodes during the week, and then binge a show on the weekend. My real life demanded more and more time and the shows coming out were starting to stack up. I then started making criteria of shows i would watch and then filtering through, so i could make sure i got a hold of the shows that i have been expecting or sound good. Unfortunately, that means that i miss a ton of other shows that are hot topics. All the new waifus coming out monthly and i can't keep up. I simply don't try anymore. I take my time and scan through season releases for shows that have descriptions that seem intriguing to me, and then i watch them only. When i get more time, i may see what others recommend, but for the most part, i will only watch what i feel like, since it is a hobby that i enjoy and refuse to turn it into a chore.

This made me realise that I watch basically four type of anime - the 'GOAT' ones (DN, CG, S;G, FMA:B etc) , the Hyped ones (MHA, OPM, AOT etc), anime which are similar to the genre I like by seeing the above two categories (Baccano, Mob Psycho, One Outs etc) and the current ones that are either next seasons of any anime I see or are hyped/looks good (Black Clover, S;G 0, MHA S3 etc) Also this made me realize that I don't watch that much anime and (maybe I'm the minority) I instead of watching a ton of shows, watch only some selected ones (like my whole watch list of last year is in the examples above + HXH and Made in Abyss) and often rewatch many cool/interesting scenes with pauses in between to dicuss within myself only (don't judge) what's my take on the current thing happening atm in that anime and predictions/reactions etc.

Damn you sumed up the way I watch pretty well :D something you didnt mention specifically but I guess you do as well is only watch one anime at a time. I just dont like watching different stuff on different days, how many do with the seasonal anime. And I usually wait until I can watch the series at the speed I want and I dont have to wait for a week for the next episode. A Example for that would be a place further than the universe: I waited for the end of the season to see what the community (in this case Gigguk) liked and started watching it. BTW: CS= Code Geass SG=Steins gate FMAB= full metal alchemist brotherhood, but whats DN? Death note ?

Dude I'm exactly like you. I might watch 3-4 shows a season that are basically the same categories. Although I tend to watch these with close friends. I don't think its healthy trying to watch even half of a current season, that's like 20 shows every four months.
@Axxidous6 жыл бұрын
Also I didn't know seasonal anime mentality was a thing. I mean, yeah I can see people being into current anime and it being the primary focus of discussion. Cuz it's airing NOW. It's NEW. People are going to WATCH it and talk about it. But I didn't really that meant people felt like they couldn't watch something older. I watch older stuff all the time. So do most people I know. Sure, I tried out Darling in the FranXX and I've been keeping up with My Hero Academia. But I actually really like My Hero Academia. Don't really care much about Boruto but I'm sure people still talk about Naruto. I haven't finished the show yet cuz I waited for the fillers to end and then got lazy since I'd already read the manga ending. But it's JUST the ending I haven't watched yet (aside from a few clips) I've NEVER heard of people watching something at heightened speeds to finish it faster. That sounds uncomfortable. o: I've actually watched stuff TWICE or 3 times just to watch it again with someone else. Sometimes to catch them up to me so we can continue together. Never had a problem with time. XD

But then you have a choice. I always find myself coming back to this video, especially for one reason: As a child/teen I had no one to talk about anime with and the first "anime friends" I met was in a super small convention in my city. We were all amazing friends and whenever someone said they liked anime I was overjoyed about being able to meet someone to talk to and I still am at my late twenties. However, my surroundings are not the same. If you say you like anime, someone who likes anime won't necessarily want to be your friend. It's hard to come to terms with that, but I'm also happy that anime has become more mainstream and a medium for everyone to enjoy! Thanks for this vid!!!

I usually wait for things to finish airing before I even consider watching it as I love a good binge. Bonus points if the source material (Manga or LN are both fine) has been finished and translated so that when I finish the anime I can go back and read the source material to see things I missed or things that werent animated, or if the anime left at a cliff hanger, never to be resolved on screen.

Everything is accessible now. Back when I was young, we only watched Animes that was only shown on TV. Philippine TV networks in the early 2000's air Anime shows 4:00pm to 5:30pm. A timeslot for kids who just got home after school. There were shows aired daily or weekly. Bootleg DVD's had also become our way of watching shows that aren't on Local TV before torrent and streaming. And growing up, there wasn't any type of humiliation (from where I was studying or living) if you love Anime because it has been a part of our past time as entertainment. Shows like DBZ, Gundam Wing, Samurai X, Naruto, One Piece, Slam Dunk, Sailor-Moon, Yaiba, Yu Yu Hakusho (Ghost Fighter), Evangelion, Voltes V, Daimos, Doreamon, Hunter X Hunter, FMA, Hajime No Ippo and Tri-Gun have become classics here.

As a long-time anime fan, hearing people view anime at 1.2x speed just to get through it astounds me. It's a completely foreign concept that I can't understand. Like, why? Just take your time and enjoy the show. It's 2018, not 2008. We don't have to worry that the show we were watching on an illegal site or KZbin is going to be taken down within a few days so we need to watch it the moment it's uploaded. Take your time to properly enjoy the things you love, don't treat them like commodities. I know we lead hectic lives, but really... is watching anime at 1.2x speed going to really make that much of a difference to your time management or schedule? I only find that watching it at a faster speed makes it sound stupid and breaks the flow of the episode, but I guess each to their own
@stefanonono92406 жыл бұрын
Honestly in my case, I watch all anime at 2x speed if the video player allows me to, for me it doesn't break up the flow or pacing of the show too much and I can keep up just fine. I watch at 2x speed not mainly to get through it quicker, but because all that time watching an anime at normal speed adds up, if you watch a 12 episodes of a 24 minute show that's almost 5 hours, if you watch the same show at 2x speed it takes around 2 and a half hours, that leaves you 2 and a half hours of time you can do use on anything else productive. Just a case of - I don't like to waste time when I am able to create more time for myself with no major drawback by watching anime at a higher speed

My man, you took the words out of my mouth, I 100% agree with you, I miss the days when I could watch an anime without feeling like I’m watching the same show with different production quality’s, like when I first watched Pokémon, Death note and ANY FUCKING SHONEN.

I don't like doing that, I have a watch list, and I don't care about the seasonal anime. I watch the anime I choose chonologically on my list, given I MAY have 20+ on my list

I give a try to every anime that airs in a season when I have the chance and see what manages to pique my interest in three eps... and then there's my "to watch" list, mostly filled with anime that came before I got my own computer and things I liked but didn't have the time to watch while it was airing. Those are for when I'm sick and resort to binge-watching to survive the day.

Same here, ever since I've started watching anime I've never really tried to keep up with the current airing shows. I honestly just prefer to watch what I want at my own pace so I can actually enjoy and appreciate the artwork that is anime

I miss the old days where every thing was new to me. Just sitting on the front of the screen for hours and hours full of wonder on what will happen next in the story. Now, it feels like the current anime that went out is just a less or greater version of some other shows that went out last season or two, and now Im sitting on front of my screen waiting to find the next clićhe...

Initial D with its impressive CG (for the time) and unorthodox choice of OST. It put some people into TWO groups, Anime community AND Car community.

The Raging Storm Might happen, but I think Group B anime set in the 80's would be awesome.

EFCasual It really captures the 90's era with everything it had. Except with the Ikeda's Z33 and the GT86 at the end. Which is appears before it even designed. But overall, it is an excellent anime. I don't know how many anime out there that could put some to two or more groups, but Initial D is one of them.

I miss the anime aesthetics of the 80s/90s. The color tonality, saturation, shading and the way faces were drawn was better. There are still some great anime nowadays but it's hard to find.

For me, awareness of anime as such goes back to the early 80s and "The Last Unicorn", VCRs exploded everything, as did video rentals. But, like any other library, my anime library has its classics, its guilty pleasures, its otherwise unknown treasures. Things I like and things I love, and titles I cannot whip myself up for at all (*koff*AttackonTitan*koff*). Which is just how it is in the pop culture.

While you're obviously right about the direction the overall anime fandom has taken, don't forget that there are still oddballs like me who don't follow the seasonal hype. I've been watching anime for roughly 15 years, and I've _never_ watched a currently airing show from week to week (mostly because I don't like that viewing format, I strictly watch one series to completion before moving on to the next). I don't have a burning desire to chat about everything I see with other people. I guess that makes me... special? Anyway, every time I hear an anime fan complain "It's impossible to keep up with all these shows anymore!", I smile inside. Because I can enjoy watching what I want without driving myself crazy.

Hah, thanks m8 :). I used to play that game quite enthusiastically a while back, and LouisEX was always my favorite character. Plus I have blond hair too (much darker, though), so a certain visual resemblence was enough for me to decide he'd make for a good avatar.

Every time I get into a fandom it seems like most people are involved in the hobby more for discussion than just enjoying the hobby. I like talking about anime too but I watch a pretty even mix of shows from the 90s,00s and the last decade and there's always people online who are discussing anything im interested in no matter how obscure. I just don't get why people create these problems for themselves honestly.
