Intro:
Made by Arith Härger (myself). My dear friends, following the previous audio, on the previous video, concerning the breath, vital force and spirit and awaking life, now I share with you another one. This one is to call the ancestors. So after awaking life it's time to call the ancestors. On this particular audio I've given more focus on my voice rather than drums or anything else. After the breath awakes the spirit, the spirit will have a voice to call out other spirits. Hope you enjoy my "kind-of-throat-singing".
The Thumbnail, as always, created by Arith Härger (myself, again, hehe).

This is exactly how I feel. I look at my cats as the children of my soul. We humans tend to pay too much attention to the body/blood, but essence/spirit is what connect us. How may times we have met someone that we get along right away? Someone we feel like we've known them all our lives? I believe we have. Thank you so much Arith for this series on Animism. Loved this one. ❤️

I have a playlist made up exclusively of all of Arith's animism videos. That makes it a lot easier to rewatch and review all of this material which is quite overwhelming on first and even second views. I find I have to take breaks every ten to fifteen minutes and just sit in a daze and reflect on everything that was said, since it is all new to me.

I did a ritual where i invited "good ancestors" into my life..and the bad ones i bounded and rejected from my presence... It was more complicated than that..but that was the intention..

i may, for my own part have an understanding of what you mean. i have done VERY VERY few what i would call rituals or spells - but on occasions felt i really needed to because of other people entering my life - and doing things in my home - for instance - i knew a woman who practiced Vou-Doo and she also did a lot of drugs - she got it into her head that my neighbour was evil - i came home from getting take out food to find her doing an elaborate ritual in my living room - Needless to say this upset me, and i had a lot of work to do for a while to clear that stuff.

interesting video. regarding thor's goats, there is a similar situation going on with the celtic deity the ollathair or the dagda, who owns two pigs, one of which is alive and the other roasting on a spit. in both cases the animals can be used for food and will return to life to feed people once again. this seems to embody a principle of ongoing renewal or plenty, suggesting a principle of necessity and survival which both of these deities deal with in a very similar way. regarding spirits, there may be many forms of these and different spirits may be present in different situations. ancestors can linger on in forms which may be known as ghosts or wights. burial places such as mounds or barrows seem to be very strong for these encounters. the sidhe the fae or the faeries appear to be another variant, a very powerful and prevalent form.

He doesn't like Irish mythology much, so I poke fun at him all the time showing him his same gods and goddess in other forms within different cultures. To me he is an arrogant A-hole but I still enjoy his video but that doesn't mean I don't like flicking $h!t his way from time to time, his little Loki

@@MrBlazingup420 Sorry you feel that way towards me. I've never given any sign that I don't like this mythology or that mythology. Just because I don't speak about something, doesn't mean I hate it or dislike it in any way. And I don't have "my" gods, as I do not own any deity. I'm sorry but what you just wrote here seems to be your personal reflection not based on my own person at all but just a keen dislike for me you want to nurture for some reason. All I can say is that I wish you all the best. Stay strong and safe. Thank you for your time.

Thank you friend, very interesting. Never heard of ollathair before, I'm going to check it. I've been digging through Irish myths as I find many similarities not just within some Old Norse conceptions but also within Neolithic until the early Iron Age religious conceptions and mythologies of the Iberian Peninsula, and it's interesting that the pig is often the animal companion of gods related to the earth, fertility but also sexuality. This is found in archaeology in late Bronze Age and early Iron Age of Northern Portugal and Spain, the statues of pigs with curled tails which is the same behaviour pigs have when ready to mate. I'll have a future video on animism concerning the trickster spirits, although in that video I shall not speak about the Sidhe in Ireland, but while researching trickster spirits it would seem the Sidhe are among the "spirits" known to animists as tricksters, which have a very important role in various animistic belief systems and mythologies. Thank you.

This video has really caused me to pause and reflect on some pretty important (to me) parts of my belief system. When I call upon my ancestors to share things or offer/gain support, I pretty much assumed that I was 'stuck' with a couple of beings that I did not necessarily want to be interacting with any longer. And according to how I understood this video, they are likely not a part of my ancestors due to their unwillingness or ability to have mutually beneficial relationships while living their life. This video has helped me have a better understanding of who/what my ancestors are (or could be). Frankly, I'm relieved. The way you explain this makes so much sense to me. I can't thank you enough for all you do for this KZbin community and the people who follow you here, especially myself 🖤 I've learned so much from you and I appreciate you more than I can say.

Yes, yes! I’m Brazilian and my background is SO diverse, so I never even thought of calling upon this kind of “ancestor” because I know very well that some of mine have enslaved the other ones. I actually KNOW that one of my “ancestors” (not in the spiritual sense, only physical) was a known cruel person back in colonial times through my dad’s side, but then I also know the last person in my family who was a slave through my mother’s side. I always think about the first guy “man, he would be so pissed. Good”

A late comment: I very much appreciate the idea that Ancestors are not merely deceased relatives. I am mostly estranged from family and don't know the names of deceased relatives. I thought I was strange for being unable to engage in Ancestor veneration, but your presentation leaves it very matter-of-fact: I don't even know their names. Thank you kindly!

When working with ancestors, guides, other beings, I am very careful to ask that only helpful and respectful beings come forth. Just opening the door to anything can lead to not-so-great results/experiences. Knowledge about what you’re dealing with is absolutely key. Great video on this topic. Keep up the good work, ya cool kid, you🙂

Just because you ask does not mean it shall happen. Before being able to know whether in your subjective experience it is a good or bad being, it is already too late. Only an arrogant witch (or spiritual person) thinks they have full control over the results of their rituals. Not to mention, good and bad is subjective to each individual, outside of human understanding or manifested life there is no good or bad, every thing just is. It could be argued that a certain energy around and in a ritual attracts certain results or beings, this is very much true but at the same time is not a given, it requires extensive experience and/or initiation to do this and even then the results may vary. Not an attack, just a friendly note.

So, this all makes a lot of sense. And the pragmatism with spiritual practice is also something that has come up in divinations and I have struggled with reconciling that with my spiritual desires (lol, I know that is not really how it works, intent is not the same as desire). Unfortunately, all I can find to delve deeper into my animistic worldview intellectually, experientially, emotionally, and physically is Michael Harner style neo-shamans and something about that community is very capitalistic and awkward. I'm at a loss finding connections outside of that and outside of online spaces (pandemic not withstanding).

The ancestors, I respect, meaning, I do not call upon them, I did not KNOW them well enough to recall, they come on their own if the need be. They indeed help with evolution, that I know for sure, it is very rare they expect or teach you to remain the same. Veneration to me for the ancestors, them knowing how their wisdom has helped me move forward. I also notice, the ancestors I have encountered, much prefer respect, then to be given gifts or sacrifice nor praise or worship, if there is gift giving, it is not of expectation, yet it holds a certain knowing of whom your giving the gift to..

I have a question. Maybe Arith mentioned it and I just missed it but I'm curious... Can non-human persons (like cats) become ancestors? Maybe "ancestors" isn't the right word because we can't relate to them in the same way we could relate to and respect a human person but still. Can they remain and interact in our daily lives after they die?

I didn't hear anything about it and have no idea if this helps but in my family's belief system (german folk religion paganism mix maybe?) we believe the pets reside with the family ancestors because they kinda get adopted in and because of the bond creates family ties. Also I experienced past dogs (ancestors) being asked to guide the new puppy of the family to greatness and for protection. Idk if this helps but I hope it did

A very interesting insight into this subject friend. Your perception is very intuitive and pagan, but also demonstrates the deliniation of pagan society. I will try and describe this subject, in both modern scientific, and ancient terms, from the other perspective, I hope you take the time to read it. The human condition is made up of a physical, and spiritual existence. This can be broadly determined in what we understand as matter and energy. Neither can be created, or destroyed. Although we are not directly aware of it, everything in our lives is transmitted in energy waves. Everything we percieve, everything we imagine, everything that hits our awareness. This can be detected, and proven, using the modern technique of EEG. This is transmitted in an ever increasing orb, eternally. Like a radio broadcast. It does not fade, but becomes more dispersed with time. Its impact becomes less intense, but more broad. That energy, or spirit, may contact, and become mutated, by other energy patterns. Our bodies are also capable of being influenced by energy patterns. From a individuals perspective, we commonly experience this as the senses. Light, sound, heat. They are all at their base, energy transmissions. The power of these transmissions are generally dependant on the proximity of its source. Like a radio transmission. Once we have understood this concept, we can move on to the next stage. In ancient pagan society, there was a delineation between the physical class and the spiritual class. The physical class known as "the people", the spiritual class as Druids, or translated "the brotherhood". A person would decide, or "be drawn to" the people, or the Druidry, usually at puberty (with good reason). The people would be occupied with physical things. Improving the land resource, family, children, and leaving an inheritance for the next generations. The Druids however, were not interested, or involved in this activity, but committed themselves to spiritual activities, seperated from the rest of society, which may corrupt their spiritual journey. The closest modern equivalent to the European Druids, is the Buddhist Monk. Many of the Druidic traditions still exist, incorporated into modern, invasive religions. Monastries for example. So what was this Druid tradition all about ? Firstly, I should describe the "life after death" objectives of the people, and there understanding, or "way of life". The sacred masculine was outward looking, The heavenly father. The masculine would "go out" from the homeplace to collect resource to maintain the homeplace. The sacred feminine was inward looking. The feminine would collect from the masculine, and take in the resources to create a home, and use those resources to grow and maintain children. Inward looking, Mother earth. Pacha Mama. It must be understood that these were not subservient roles, but entirely interdependant. One could not exist without the other. Offspring needed participation from both. The daily bread needed participation from both. And that is the point. For the person who has chosen a physical path, eternal life must be physical. That physical eternity is embodied in your children. If the reader has children, look into their eyes and soul. It IS you ! You have transmitted your soul into your child, and nourished and protected that investment into eternity. Orgasmically. As time goes by, and generations pass, your identity will be diluted to a weaker signal. Just as it is with your spiritual transmissions. Your identity is still there, and far more widespread, but not as strong in each individual, which has been mutated by contact with other physicalities. The body, and personality of that person, does not exist after death, but is preserved in their children. And then their children. That is why it has been traditional through the ages, to spare the women and children. If you kill them, you obliterate an eternal life force. It is a terrible sin. Punishable by burning. It is also why traditionally a boy becoming a man has sexual connotations. He is no longer a child, he is now "fair game". So, to the Druidic tradition. Whereas the people invested in physical manifestation, the Druids did exactly the opposite. They concentrated all their efforts on spiritual, or energetic immortality. They were not concerned with physical things, unless it lead to spiritual advancement. They actively avoided physical immortality, because it deflected from spiritual immortality. To the extent that even leaving a written or artistic account in the physical was forbidden. To absolutely reject any connection with physicality. At puberty, a spiritual boy would leave their family, and join the brotherhood, with a mentor, to guide their spiritual progress. All contact with the peoples, and physicality, was broken. Physical reproduction was an absolute no go. In extreme cases castration was performed. Material possession and desires were non existent. The philosophy being that all things must continue, and if they left no physical footprint, then the continuation must be spiritual. Their lives were spent in meditation and processes to strengthen the connection with the energy that swarms through the universe, which are the transmissions of long past experiences. Opening themselves up, and inviting the input of that energy. Communion with the broadcasts that is the experience of the ancestors. Using that collective knowledge to advise the peoples. The wisdom of the ages of success and failure. The wise ones. The wizards. Revered, respected, and indeed feared by the peoples. This "connection" developed with the ancestors can be easily equated with modern connection with the internet. The internets wide spectrum of knowledge, of experience, of usefulness, and its necessity. Where would we be in the modern world if the internet went down ? These principles can help us understand the relationship between the peoples and the Druids. The Druids went out, and acquired the information to benefit the peoples. The sacred masculine. The heavenly father. The peoples consumed the information, and used it to maintain, feed, clothe, house, and build constructs for the Druids, the sacred feminine. Pacha Mama. Mother earth. When a Druid died, they continued to exist, not in the physical, but in the spiritual. Elaborate ceremonies were performed to effect the transition. Once arrived, they became absorbed into the transmissions that flood the energetic matrix of the universe. They become part of the greater collective, known as the brotherhood. Their personage, or personality will be slowly absorbed into the greater collective, in the same way that physical traits are slowly absorbed into the greater physical collective. As is above, so is below. Their purpose is to define and control the vast wealth of collective information, and disseminate it to the living Druids. Therein lies the connection with the ancestors. That is why, any connection with the ancestors is experienced as rather ambiguous. It will not be a clear conversation like you were talking to another person. You are communicating with an entity that is an integral part of a collective. Their earthly personality has been partially absorbed. There may even be confusion within communication between a singularity, and a collective. Misunderstandings. Misperceptions. A spirit may return to earth, but not in a classical sense. He cannot be reborn. But he may "bond" with a living person or animal, and partially occupy that physical existence. This cannot be forced, but must be emotionally invited. Therefore it is not a "possession" of a living body, that is something else that diversifies this explanation, similar to rape. We could call this spiritual reproduction. This "bonding" is in fact, exactly what Druids are striving to achieve. To join with the spiritual collective. To join and share intimately with the spirituality of another being / beings. To invite and accept the spirit of another, and allow it to become part of us. And in the process, to discard part of what we once were. Assimilation. Rejection of the physical. So, yes, I am in communion with the collective. You may choose to refer to them as the ancestors. But they are not all my earthly ancestors. I allow them to control my actions. But it has always been my choice. If i don't pray / meditate / commune it is my choice. The experience is profound. I can only equate it with the internet again. Imagine explaining the internet to someone a hundred years ago. And to the peoples I say, do you let your interaction with the internet effect your decisions, your path ? You have learnt things from the internet, that the people one hundred years ago would not comprehend, or understand. But it is not magic. You may be able to converse with another person thousands of miles away, face to face. Unnatural ? Occult ? You may be able to instruct someone to send you a package from China, instantly. Dark forces ? Pagan and Druidic rites are as natural as the Oak tree that drops its acorns to nourish the next generation of inhabitants.

I would recommend/suggest (to start) Rane Willerslev, Viveiros de Castro, Graham Harvey as recent sources, but also an older one Irving Hallowell. Each focuses on different cultures such as Siberian, Amazonian, Ojibwe, etc. so you get a different pictures but also common and similar perceptions, beliefs and conceptions from different cultures and geographical realities. I also recommend that last book I've made a review on, Evergreen Ash, by Christopher Abram, which is a good animistic approach, of sorts, to Old Norse and Icelandic cutlural aspects. Fabio Rambelli as well for animism in Japan in contemporary times, as Japan is still quite animistic and it's useful to understand how things are these days. Thomas DuBois has a very interesting book "Shamanism" and he picks various cases but one in particular which is the case of Thai Vang Yang, a practicing Hmong txiv neeb. As I often say, there's no shamanism without an animistic understanding, so this one will also be useful. Also, check Roger S. Gottlieb, it's really worth it. Also Juha Pentikäinen, perhaps even Joy Francis, Knut Helskot and Hans Mebius for Finno-Ugric studies.

However I do not know any names so until I find out any names I don't have any specific ancestors to call out to.

I’m not too sure about people staying the same when they have died. I think when contacts the ancestors it is not speaking with the actual ancestor but more a like a simulation drawn from the well of memory. Not sure what anybody else thinks?

Yes, as I said in the video, the ancestors are not seen as human anymore by most animistic societies. In fact, a human person, after death, whether it becomes an ancestor or not, is no longer human and therefore has no link to its former humanity (embodiment). They do not stay the same as they are not even considered human, and the same thing goes to the former-human dead persons who do not become ancestors but simply become a whole other range of spirits - these do not stay the same as they have once been. As I said, not every human-person becomes an ancestor after death, and many entities seen as ancestors were never human to begin with. I think the modern conceptions of ancestry in spiritual terms is highly clouded by DNA studies which are often the interest of people who seek to confirm their prejudices towards others they hate, or want to prove a definition of "purity of race" in their new-found alternative versions of paganism which end up being modern conceptions. Ancestry and Ancestors in animism, and by extent in past paganisms, never deal/dealt with ideas of ancestors as being human or human-like. I think it's also important to refer (as I said in previous videos concerning animism and ancestors) the idea of the dead and the ancestors continuing to appear as they were in life is a modern idea of linking apparitions/ghosts/revenants to a conception of spirit/soul.

@ Thanks for replying. I think I understand a little better now where your coming from. I could never get my head around spiritualism. I also very much agree about all these white supremacy types trying to appropriate northern spirituality. If you want a really interesting theory on the link between shamanism and DNA, check out a book by an anthropologist called Jeremy Narby. He has written a book called The Cosmic Serpent . He has developed a theory about intelligence in nature. I found his conclusions jaw dropping. Great video as ever arithmetic, your a legend.

Long ass comment alert... lol This is pretty interesting, especially since you brought up some stuff I've thought about in relation to "worshipping " ancestors. I've never been drawn to "worship" any of mine, in fact I've never even really felt like part of my family. The little I know about the people from my family in this life that are dead most of them were not very good people. Lots of racism, and other stuff... On a more positive note... I started my own merch line! I'm so fucking excited! I've only added three of my designs so far, but I'll be adding more. You totally should check it out! 😁😆 teespring.com/grow-bloom-nourish-flourish?pid=2&cid=2232 Also, thought I'd share another song you might like.
