Conocí personalmente a tu padre en ese torneo (yo trabajé de muralista y "transcritor", pues el boletín del torneo se necesitaba en algebraico y yo era el único que sabía algebráico entre los muralistas). Recuerdo perfectamente la partida. Tu padre le metió a Karpov el mismo tubo que Fischer se había metido a alguien (que ahora no recuerdo, quizá Saidy, quizá Byrne) y dejó al ruso completamente perdido. Se aplazó la partida y poco antes de la la reanudación le pregunté a Kaplan que qué opinaba Karpov del asusnto, y Kaplan me dijo que lo que dijo Karpov era impublicable.

For someone who wasn't a GM at the time to decline a perpetual with black against Karpov takes nerves of steel - I bet 90% of people in that situation would have taken the draw immediately. And then forcing him to find a rook sac when otherwise he'd have been completely lost - wow!

It was beautiful when you said your father’s name so fluently of course but it confused me at first and I had to think is Anna talking about the Spanish priest Fr Ruy Lopez that originally studied the Spanish opening! My brother and I when we were kids in the early eighties idolized Karpov before his nemesis appeared. We used to laugh that he listed his interests outside chess as philately and Marxist-Leninism thinking he was joking with both. Now as an older man I realize, stamps are excellent highly fungible commodities and can alllow wealth to be transferred easily and he was probably indoctrinated into the Communist system. Karpov visiting Kasparov in prison later when the latter was arrested for protesting against the curtailment of freedoms was genuinely touching. You should be very proud of your father’s achievements and he reminds me of Tal or Stein with initiative at all costs being the leitmotif of his vigorous play.

In 1970ies and 1980ies then were usually around 3 Players at the same time > 2600. 1981 they were Karpov, Korchnoij and the German Robert Hübner.

BTW: In 1973, Karpov was No. 2 of the FIDE world rank list, superseded only by a guy called Robert James Fischer, who wasn't playing chess anymore at that time. So back then, your dad drew with the black pieces(!) against the already best active player in the world!
