It's not that it's more unsafe for kids to be outside, it's that parents living in the suburbs are far less likely to trust their neighbors and don't feel comfortable letting their kids outside. It's the isolating environment of single family homes that cause this illusion and not that it's more dangerous for kids Edit: spelling

@Superfluous n Scrupulous Yall I get it, I'm wrong, please leave me alone 😭 It is still more dangerous than it used to be, that's why my mom didn't let me and my siblings outside a lot, especially without any supervision from me or her. “The only thing *I* was *worried* about as a kid was what my mom was making for dinner!” Ah, yes, because it is the children’s fault for being so worried and busy and not the adults, society and education system that is putting lots of expectations and heavy weight on kid’s shoulders and overwhelming them with work, plus social media for constantly pushing the narrative that everyone has to conform and look a certain way and “grow up too fast.” And definitely kid’s faults when adults politicize their children. Thanks for clearing that up, Brent

right? i'm sixteen and when i was little i had a pretty free-range kid lifestyle, but i still had an insane amount of anxiety. i'm super lucky that i have really great parents and i live in a pretty safe area, but growing up with completely unsupervised internet access really does some stuff to you. (incoming internet trauma dump) i remember hitting puberty and wikihow-ing how to make your hips smaller because i felt fat compared to the girls i saw online. that was back when thigh gaps reigned supreme, which totally fucked up my body image. looking back at pictures of me then, i was this scrawny little kid, but i remember looking in the mirror and hating what i saw. i was always too curious for my own good. i was curious about sex really early on, and i remember once googling it. cue images burned into my brain. it didn't help, being neurodivergent and having intense anxiety from a young age. the whole "haha-mental-illness-is-quirky" trend and a million memes mocking autistic traits that i saw completely kept me from understanding that what i was going through wasn't typical. that's not to say the internet wasn't great. i wouldn't be the person i am today. i learned what it meant to be queer, and all the ways that could look. i developed a stronger sense of empathy, being able to connect with people around the world. i learned so much about history, literature, movies, fashion, culture, comedy, all things that i treasure now. the internet is a strange world to grow up in. i don't think it's too different from the world we live in, though. i'm relatively well-adjusted and happy, but i think most of that comes from the people who raise you.

Fun fact! The "billiard ball attached to a piece of wood by a string" is actually from Japan, and it's used for juggling! It's called a Kendama (originally known as the Nichigetsu Ball/"Sun and Moon" Ball), and the goal of this toy is to use balance and technique to either; A. Get the Tama (the ball) to land in one of the three cups (Kozara [small], Chuzara [medium], and Ozara [big). B. Get the Kensaki (the spike) through the hole of the Tama. C. Do lots of other neat tricks! People actually compete with these as well! I've used one myself, they're incredibly fun and the history of the Kendama is incredibly fascinating!! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, I enjoyed sharing this information. I once thought it would be useless knowledge I wouldn't get to share, but ig I was wrong! :)

so, I've worked with kids for the past 5, going on 6 years, ranges in ages 6 weeks to 12( not including the kids I interact in my job that arnt in the actual program) and you made some valid points. We are actively seeing a change in how the younger generation interact and are developing. Major mile stones are shifting slowly over time but all in all I have more of an issue with the adults that shit on how much kids use and rely on technology. You( the adults or parents) are the one so readily giving your children this technology that helps them do things, and then get frustrated they use it to..... do the things you got it for? I see kids playing on the playground all the time, they still pick up random sticks and play pirates, but they also play online and for some kids that's is the only way they know and get interactions

i talked to my highschool history teacher who was teaching freshman last year, even just missing two years has tremendously affected her students socially because they never really had their awkward middle school phase. my middle and high schools were connected so most of us went into highschool with friends, but most of them didn't really have anyone to hang out with because they'd basically went from 5th grade to 9th without meeting most of their classmates. it's fascinating and something really worth looking into

Gosh, this whole phenomenon AND the phenomenon of younger kids (~3-10?) being *so* into watching _other kids play_ on KZbin or other elsewhere. I worry we’ll see the effects of them not actually playing themselves and truly learning to play with others. The imagination aspect is missing because it’s given to them and they *_zone_* tf out to it. It’s really all so strange. But I admit I hadn’t thought about the aspect of kids essentially missing all of middle school and the honest to god survival skills learned at that time. Can’t wait to hit my girlfriend with that thought! Thanks homie. 😂😌

I'm a highschool senior who is interning at the primary school, and it's affecting kids directly all the way through school. There's higher and higher rates of primary kids in special Ed just because they never learned to read properly or never learned school rules because they were never in school. (not dismissing that there are also just more kids who need more support being discovered, it's both). The highschoolers are a lot more behind socially and developmently because despite how much middle school sucks, it's some of the most important formative social years. Current middle schooler often have a combo of worse social skills and worse academic skills because they missed parts of primary and middle. It's still affecting the higher levels of highschool, but less because those years are less developmental than primary or middle. But I work with kids in 2-4th grade who can't write a sentence, and a couple who don't even know all their letter sounds because they simply couldn't learn online.

I remember when I was teenager the other teenager who were only 2 years younger than me were no longer reletable to me. For adults 2 years is nothing but if your young it does make a difference. Like when I was 15 I wouldn't hang around 13 year olds.

As a middle school teacher, I can tell you it has affected them massively. The students I had in last year's 8th grade, who are now the freshman to you, were literally some of the worst people I've ever met. It's sad to me, because they have so much growth to make and they have intellectual potential. But man, they were just mean, horrid, and destructive. But also to be fair, I have a group whose middle school years have been unaffected for now, and they are arguably worse.

My mom teaches kindergarten and when everyone was allowed to go back to schools instead of online, she said that many of the kids didn't even know how to hold a pencil correctly because their parents didn't know how to teach them and the kids couldn't be in-person to have someone show them how to do it right in front of them. I hate this new genre of media where people are almost shaming kids for engaging with social media. Like yes. For kids too much screen time is awful! But it’s awful for everyone! How many of us have to lock our apps, put on timeouts, or delete apps from our phone because we’re spending wayyyy too much time on the internet. I don’t think that the best way to engage with kids to make them understand the harmful effects is to be like “you’re acting too old! Back in _my day_ this is how things were done!” Because like. Okay? That doesn’t change the fact that things are different. Things have changed! Instead of digging your heels in and and getting upset because time and change exists, understand why people do the things they do. I think we’ll see that they value the same things you did as a kid. Things change. Time moves on. People will do things differently. That’s how civilization works. Stop trying to keep things the way that were. You’ll start sounding like your freaking grandparents with their backwards views.
