This may be stating the obvious but with the times being what they were, most gay and lesbian couples weren't exactly open about it. This means that who was and wasn't, wasn't always obvious. In cases where it's practically plastered on a billboard, some still choose to adopt the default assumption that "it wasn't obvious for reasons. With the number of people that contribute to a wikipedia article, never mind the number of possible revisions, who can say?

Ann Walker did not check herself into asylum. She was forced, after her bro in law, aka @hole, argued for and had her “diagnosed” insane. He finally inherited her fortune, and then died a year later. Her aunt two years later, asked to have Ann return to her estate. Her aunt then died, and Ann inherited Shibden Hall again for 9 years, finding out Anne Lister’s truths (snd lies) about her worth. Both women, are incredible in their own way.

Everything about Anne Lister's life and legacy comes down to pure luck. Luck that she found herself in a spot where she had complete financial freedom (even though her brothers had to die for her to obtain Shibden Hall), luck that she thought to record her every waking moment in secret code, luck that her prolific diaries were never destroyed either by time, the elements, or her descendants, luck that they were discovered at all. I'm so thankful that the universe seemed to conspire to ensure Anne's legacy wasn't erased so that future historians and sapphics alike could have a rare, clear view into one historical lesbian's life.
@Alina_Schmidt3 жыл бұрын
To me it‘s not the universe but a combination of coincidences. All of them combined seem very unlikely, for sure. But given how many queer* people must have existed throughout history - many of whom we know nothing or very little about or can‘t be sure if or how they were queer - it‘s not that unlikely that there would be clearer records of at least a few of them. And Ann Lister isn‘t a too unlikely canidate to be among this few: She was rich, had the ability to write, had the ability to write in code and had enough time to write. * and even ‚queer’ is kind if ahistorical for people who lived before that term was commonplace - in the lack of a better word

It's great to learn of her! Though claims that GNC historical women must have been "transmen" always feels like it's missing the point. Until women truly have the rights, autonomy, and freedom equal to men, any cross-dressing or transgender claims must be taken with a grain of salt. Lack of access alongside misogyny can be severely internalized and makes for some strong ulterior motives.

It's pretty amazing her diary survived. Historians researching LGBT historical figures often struggle to find a lot of information because many people were too afraid to write anything that might be "incriminating" down, and even when they did if someone else found that information written later they would often destroy the writings.

Ruth would be the woman who was close to her mother-in-law. I can't see a sexual or romantic relationship in that story.

Australian Quakers are loudly inclusive, and strongly supported the Gay Marriage Referendum. It is not like that worldwide with the Quakers, so I believe.

I love Gentleman Jack, I've seen three episodes so far, and I've ended each episode with a stupid grin on my face! 😂 I'm quite curious to get to read the diaries, too, if I can.

Great one, always love a gay history video! Have you seen "Colette" with Keira Knightley ?

No. Can you please send a link? Appreciate in advance if you're able or actually do. Xxx

Didn't like that one at all. It's really just about a couple who sleeps with the same people behind eachothers back..... Not a very good movie, sorry. Boring

l0n3wolf89 still better than Carol
@l0n3wolf895 жыл бұрын
@@annajones2232 nope, sorry, but I disagree :-) Carol is a class of it's own. Colette is an interesting movie, but I would never recommend anyone to see it just based on the "lesbian content", it's not worth the time or energy. To each their own, I mean.... There are people our there who think that Kristen Stewart is attractive 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮😱😱😱😱

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ann had the education on gender at the time (Like what studies / knowledge we have now), they might have questioned their gender. It was such a great series to watch and would love to watch more on iPlayer if they ever decided to make another series

I love historical lesbian stuff. If you have time, I would adore a deep dive into the world of Natalie Clifford Barney, Liane De Pougy, Renee Vivian and the Belle Epoque lesbians (you have a more probable trans man in the mix there too). Alla Nazimova and her world of sewing circles could be fun...either one would give you a whole cast of sapphic ladies.

That eyebrow quirk after calling her an f boy made the video for me XD
