The German shepherd is definitely a king of all breeds; the only one that has it all - the looks, the smarts, loyalty, and devotion. On top of that they're the most regal while being enormously cute at the same time

My favorite GS girl, Ayla saved me from three would-be muggers a few years back. She was very protective of my wife and my girls and even stopped a wanna-be burglar when I was not home one time. Sadly, she has passed now. I pray she will be waiting for me on the other side when my turn comes. She could not have loved more nor could she ever be loved enough.

German Shepherds are the best. Paws down! I have had 2 females and they are so smart, loving and protective just by natural instinct. My current girl Cali has a doggie door that is open 24/7 and she can come inside whenever she wants to BUT she chooses to stay outside during the night to protect us. Sometimes she sneaks in after 2 am and catches a couple of hours but the rest of the time she is on watch while we are asleep. I have 5 acres fenceless and she has never taken a step off the property without me there with her. They have an instinct for property lines and that is why they are called a moving fence when they protect a herd. The most amazing thing is when she sees kids. She goes all wiggly and ears down in the most unthreatening body language possible. Then she licks and loves on them like nothing else.

J. D. Yes I’m afraid I have. My first I adopted at 1 yo and I only ever saw her have a small scuffle with the dog next door. She was protective of her turf. She was fine with the 7 others we had at the time and actually literally shaped their behaviors. She taught my little Boston to not chase my car when I left. It was amazing to watch the process. My current one I adopted at 6 and have had her 18 months. She is very territorial with the dogs next door and that is what she spends most of her time guarding against. She just doesn’t seem to like them. She is always watching the end of my driveway no fences between properties. 4 months ago I adopted a 5 yo female pit bull and Cali wasn’t having any of that and she started 2 fights because pit bull challenged her for her sticks. I had to rehome the Pitt bull. Was sad because she was very sweet. But then I have seen Cali be totally sweet with other dogs. She reads them immediately and knows if she isn’t going to like them. She often tests them with a small lunge forward. If they back off then they are ok. I have never seen another dog not back off. I think it’s just a case of don’t challenge me. I found them both to be very alpha. But when I first brought her home my other two dogs immediately accepted her and not a single moment of any issue. At the end of they day they are just protecting their territory and everyone in their herd... cats dogs and family.

J. D. That’s a bummer. Maybe you are right and it is because she is growing up and feeling tougher. Was it on her turf or neutral ground? I admit that with Cali I always am on guard if and when we are walking near other dogs. I am in the country so walk her off leash. Each day we pass 4 dogs who are behind an invisible fence and they bark like crazy but she just keeps walking past them 10 yards from them and ignores them. I wish I was expert enough to advise you but I’m just a regular pet person. Sometimes you just don’t know the personality that is going to come out in a pup later on.

@J. D. Hi,Anneka had a problem with 2 alpha females who cannot get on,by the way they are not German Shepherd's,one is a wolfdog 🐺 hybrid the other is a Rottweiler cross who she rescued from Romania,due to a flook, they both came face with each other and the result was 💥 Anneka intervened to separate them and got badly bitten on her hand and leg, no she does not have a German Shepherd problem,she does not have German Shepherd dogs,Anneka has 2 hybrid alpha females who hate each other intensely and would fight to the death of they got half a chance to do so.

@J. D. Also in the video link I sent there is a 13 pound Boston Terrier, that is Cali's sister Tinkerbell. Cali has no problem with Tinkerbell helping herself to food out of Cali's bowl. So overall she is a very chill but high drive GSD. I think in your case you are just seeing your Shepherd's ultimate personality and character forming. They learn very quickly and as long as she learns it is not ok to attack other dogs, she will get it. I think it is just part of the socialization process and in becoming who she is. Work with it and you will be greatly rewarded when she matures. Put some treats in your pocket when you go to the dog park. When she shows the behavior you want around other dogs. Treat her and praise her. She will learn quickly.

It wasn't until the '50s and '60s in America that the slope was added for aesthetic purposes. In our GSD community, we use the terms American and True (or German German Shepherd), Straight and Sloped.

Also from time to time I add some veggies on it. Hopefully I wanna change his diet by feeding him raw food and I've searched a couple online but I just wanna know from first-hand exp. coming from y'all on how to do it. @@marcopierre8494 The rule is 80/10/10. 80% muscle meat 10% organ meat 10% bone I started feeding raw late into my dog's lives and was concerned they wouldn't chew properly so I found a place (after months of searching) that offers raw food ground in chubs. The next dog I get will be introduced to raw as a puppy so I'll get away from ground, probably. You can feed chicken leg quarters, chicken feet are great (full of glucosamine and chondroitin), liver, heart, lung, gizzards etc, chicken frames/backs (turkey as well), cuts of beef, whatever. Just make sure they are getting organ meat and bone in appropriate amounts. If you can find a source, goat meat is good, rabbit, whatever. If you feed wild game, you need to be careful because of potential parasites. Any bone you feed needs to be able to be chewed by your dog...they won't be able to chew up a leg bone from a cow, for example, and it could cause damage to teeth. Vegetables are good in small amounts. When you cook meat it kills all the living enzymes and things that dogs need. If you can find a source , green tripe is extremely healthy, great for the digestive system and my dog's LOVE it. Raw eggs, shell and all, are great...protein and calcium all in one package. My dog's don't always eat the shells but they are fine to feed. Rule of thumb is feed 2% to 3% of your dogs body weight, but will vary depending on your unique dog. My dog is hypothyroid and could not lose weight. He is now at a healthy weight thanks to raw. Raw feeding is the best thing you can do for your dog. Dogs have a shorter GI tract and stronger digestive juices so they can eat raw food that.may have "bad" bacteria in it and their bodies naturally handle it.
@marmitenot.
@marmitenot. 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcopierre8494 If you have more questions I'll try to help as best I can. You'll need a scale to weigh the meat at first so you'll be aware of how much you are feeding. Your dogs teeth will be clean, too! With a dog of that size I probably wouldn't be concerned about it not chewing well for most things he or she would be fed. My dogs are 30 lbs and are gulpers, and one almost choked on a chicken wing so I went to ground. Watch out for chicken and turkey necks...they can be choking hazards for your dog if he/she doesn't chew well.

In my admittedly biased opinion, the German Shepherd IS the King of all breeds. Their intelligence, problem solving, and decision making ability will never cease to amaze and surprise. Had a 107 lb bi-color male GSD who only had obedience, not protection, training. One night a man who must've had an IQ in the single digits came at me screaming and with a raised hand. My GSD didn't bark, didn't even bother to growl, he just lunged. He had never exhibited protection behavior prior to this. It was incredible to experience and amazing to know my buddy had my back (or, in this case, my front...); and, this from the same dog who a few yrs later while in the down position with head up at an outdoor music festival, did nothing but lick the face of an 8 yr girl who out of the blue ran at him, jumped and landed with a leg on each sided of his front legs, her face less than a foot from his. (I politely suggested to her father who ambled up a moment later, that, this wasn't the best way to approach a strange dog...). Geez, I worshipped that big lovable lug.

That slope you see is actually what they originally had for herding sheep. The straight back is actually what was bred into them once they became military/ police dogs because they didn't have to have the gait show lines have for herding and the straight back helps them be more athletic. The hip problems they have aren't because of that slope but because it's such a common breed and there are so many faulty lines. Propper health testing will make sure the dog doesn't have that.

I finally found a Perfect GSD with great genes, his father is from Germany so he’s very pure blooded. I expect to pick the puppy up the next week. Can’t wait 😊 (Edit he his basicly a old type GSD in his head to. Actully some hard to Control him. From 9-10 weeks he began to try to be dominant. We tried all to shut him down. Now he don’t have random craziness but he still have bad habits. We working on it but looks like he will be a great work dog.)

I absolutely love my German Shepherd. He has already proved his loyalty at a young age with no training! At only 11 months old we had a drink guy walking towards us one day saying many inappropriate things, I was getting very nervous and my boy stopped our walk, and stood in front of me with a low growl, the closer the guy got, the louder Fenrir got until he was full on machine gun barking as I call it and they guy took off running away. Since then I have found that Fenrir is the most loving pup, excited to meet anyone and everyone, unless I get nervous for whatever reason. At that point he won't let anyone near me so as long as I'm calm, he is calm and that's all I can ask for. Same happen on another walk once. Someone came up and was talking to me about him, petting him and then the guy started to get rude and I got uncomfortable and it was like a switch flipped, Fen pushed the guys hand away and took up a defensive position between us. Not lunging or biting but also not letting the guys within 5 feet of me because he pushed him back.

Unfortunately, he had hip & rear spine issues that caused his last years to be challenging - it was hard to see. I had to say goodbye when he was 13 and was so blessed to have him in my life! He showed up at my door when he was six (breeder microchipped so I got his history but could not find his owner), a real gift from God. It was a privilege to have a friend like that. 💖💗

I've had this breed for 40 years. An old type (pre 1980s/90s bloodlines) GSD was simply the best dog on the planet. The sloping back show lines are a travesty and completely nonsensical but I have found not all of the working lines to be stable. If you find a good one (and there are still some) never let it go! Btw it's definitely not all just about how you raise them. Genetics plays the major part - bad handling can ruin a good GSD but good handling can't make a good dog if the genetic temperament and instincts aren't there.

The bottom line now is that the breed has expanded out so far from what Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz was originally breeding that you could have two German Shepherds that might as well be different breeds. I think the lesson here is you have to buy from a breeder that is breeding what you are looking for temperament, health, and train-ability wise. Breeding dogs for appearance(show) is exactly the opposite of this. Again every breeder regardless of the breed NEEDS to focus primarily on: -Temperament -Health -Train-ability end of story

Why girl!! you couldn't have picked a better time to post this video . I recently lost my "Dinky" Grizzly On February 13th it's been a couple weeks and it's the worst. I'm so devastated I loved him he was my first Shepherd, my second dog ever . He suffered from awful health and back problems, Unfortunately he jumped on the bed one day and dislocated a disk in his back and was paralyzed from the mid-back down. That wasn't the worst thing tho, he could no longer urinate on his own what so ever. We wheeled him into the vet because he was around 115 and unable to be carried. The vet told us we had to make a decision and might have one day to decide. Anyway not to rant but he was 9 and being very uneducated on the breed, dogs in general . We did what we had to so he was no longer in pain . We would have done the chair but it's no way for him to live. He passed peacefully home with his entire family around him with a full belly of roast beef. My next companion will be a shepherd and I will never own a show GSD ever again and they honestly should not be breed them to begin with. Thank you for the video helps me more then you know.

Had the joy of living with a very large GSD alpha for 11 and 1/2 years. Superb family pet, who protected said family in various occasions, despite no special training. My primary focus, bringing him up from a pup, was that he should be sociable, to friendly people, especially kids, and other animals. A great dog to be around, as many visitors would testify. He would be more likely to lick a friendly person than bite them. An attacker, or home intruder however, would be a different matter, as proven on more than one occasion. I was gutted when he died. A truly great dog, with a huge, loving personality..

One thing that continues to amaze me about the GSD is how absolutely versatile they are. They can be police dogs, protection dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, all while being your loving family pet. Its an interesting juxtaposition when the breed is restricted/banned in many countries yet I don't think there's even one country in the world without a GSD on its police force. Amazing dogs that truly embody man's best friend. I'd love to get one one day, but working lines are too high energy for me, and the rest of the lines have health issues. Still, I'd love to support reputable breeders who are working on removing this horrible sloped back on even show GSDs. Straight backed ones are more beautiful than the sloped back.

The week I was brought home from the hospital after just being born, a friend of the family gave my Dad a German Shepherd pup that was about a month old and told him "a boy needs a dog and this is the best dog there is." Dad immediately put him on a blanket under my crib - very much against Mom's wishes - and that dog slept under or next to everything I slept in for the next 17 years. His "lookout area" was the landing between floors in the house looking straight at the front door. Every time anyone came to the door he'd give out a slight bark before they could even ring the bell to let us all know someone was there. Growing up he'd see us playing video games in the den and he would flop down behind us and let us use him as a big pillow. He learned how to let himself in and out the back door into the fenced-in backyard area to go to the bathroom. We'd keep bowls of food and water out and surprisingly he never "pigged out". One big bowl of food would last him all day, eating at the same times we would for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Although never formally trained, he was smart enough to figure things out and was fiercely loyal to me and would break out of the house to follow me around town, always just keeping out of sight so I would yell at him to go home. The one time I was attacked by a gang of other kids who tried to rob me he flew out of an alley and tore them apart until I told him to stop. He passed away right before I went into the Army. Best dog ever and I miss him dearly. One day when I retire I'll have another.

Robert A. Lofgren Jr. health wise they are not ideal. Showlines are bred mainly for looks not temperament, not functionality, not to fit the breed standard. They are generally unhealthy but this goes for most dogs with a showline variant. There is zero benefit for a gsd to have a slanted back it doesnt help with anything according to biomechanics and promotes joint issues. They can be fine pets but they would make Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz sick to see

Are you referring to sable coat colors? If so, then that would be because show lines attempt to breed it out for more popular patterns, such as saddle backs. European show lines tend to bred for deep reds and vivid colors, and American Show line GSDs usually have MUCH paler colors than other lines. The sable coat is actually the original GSD coat color, which might explain why it's so common in Working Line GSDs. Working lines are not being bred for high specific coats, so more of the original coat color gene pools are left intact. On a side note, exceptions for each line exist. Sable Showline GSDs are often prized as rare dogs and some Working line GSDs have "Show Like" colors, such as a deep red and black saddle back.

Thank you Aneka 👍 Today, Von Stefanitz would be proud of the continuity of the breed he created with the working line but would be appalled by the show line. GSD are "the dog". They are unique, even their bark is specific to the breed, they talk all the time. So intelligent they work in all tasks. Finn demonstrates how loyal they are and always instinctively wanting to please and protect their humans.

My first and only dog was a German Shepard. Absolutely amazing dog and loved member of the family. Not sure if he was a working line but he was a beautiful specimen. Amazing with family, super intelligent, loyal and a great personality. Miss him dearly.

I would like a working line German Shepherd who dropped out of protection school because it was too nice and mellow.

I agree with you. I've always thought that people who breed dogs for "beauty" don't love dogs, they love money.

Wait for the toxic cat fans to barge in screaming... No offense, even I like cats, ALONG with Dogs. I respect them for who they are, not like the toxic people who say horrible things.

The most gorgeous breed of dog out there, my absolute favorite. It's my dream to have one but I do not own a house and I know that it would only be a torture for this beautiful dog. I fell in love with one in a shelter, still a puppy but super hyperactive. She was the sweetest. I spent a lot of time with her running and playing and she was so smart despite everything. I couldn't believe someone would throw away such an incredible dog. I wanted to adopt her so much but I couldn't. Gladly, she found a nice family who adopted her.

angulation is actually extremely important to the breed. the angulation allows them to trot efficiently and effectively while conserving as much stamina as possible. working lines are bred for biting, not herding, which is the reason for the difference. doesn’t mean one is better than the other. they’re just different lines made for different things!

Going to make me cry, he looks just like the dog i had. It has been like 3 years since he passed, and I'm still sad. I miss him so much. These dogs are definitely not the same as other dogs. If i ever get another dog, it has to be a GSD.

I’ll always treasure the memory of the Shepard I grew up with, Diesel. He sported an incredible orange - hued back, fur of which I’ve not seen the like of since. I remember that he used to pace around and around the house, in and out of every single room, peering out of windows, listening to any and all sounds, for almost the entirety of the night. For ‘ breaks ‘ from patrolling he’d leap up on my bed, still mostly awake and alert, leaving me next to no space ! Our family shall always remember a family friends little daughter of 3 or 4 leading him along, quite literally, on a mere thread tied to his collar. He absolutely loved children, and I’ll miss him for the entirety of my life.

I bought a working line black female German Shepard, I'd never owned a dog before...now I wouldn't be without her, best thing I've ever done, the family love her so much. She's great with other dogs and people, obedient and loyal.

I grew up next door to a quite famous K9 named Thunder. Once he retired and his owner still worked he used to come sit and watch me and my cousins on my grandparents property. In my opinion, a stable, healthy GSD, Rott, or AMPT is about the best you can do.
