I never thought it was possible for me to build a Windsor chair. I am dyslexic and compound angles and math in general have always seemed impossible. But finding the right teacher, putting myself in the right environment, and identifying my true motivation in learning new things made it possible to do a whole LOT of things I used to think were impossible. I’m a 34 year old guy who has 4 classes left to get my Bachelors in Mathematics. I also have ADHD, a degenerative neurological disease, a spinal chord injury called a syrinx (acquired syringomyelia), chronic pain, anxiety and depression. All of these things make it extremely difficult to complete the things I start. I began woodworking in the spring because my nephew needed a COVID school desk. I spent the last day working on a Bailey 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 that I got from a friend’s dad. I LOVE working with wood and this video has been like it came from my own brain. You sound so much like me growing up. I got bored easily, didn't stay at jobs very long,when I learned all there was to learn I felt I had to move on to something else. I went through all the construction trades, took auto mechanics in school as well as all the shop classes.

Bless you. I am dyslexic too. Watching this warmed my heart. For me it was right teacher, right environment, motivation, and teaching. One of the best ways for me to learn was to teach it. At university I would sneak down to the boiler room (too embarrassed to to it where anyone would see) where I could talk out-loud to "teach" the imaginary audience. Ended my career teaching at a university cooperative extension system. Sounds like you have done the same and building to focus even more on that. I believe you will be more than fine, with a rich and rewarding life and successful career. Be proud of yourself.

It’s good to hear from other women who share the same issues. I was in my forties before I found my anchor. I went back to school for a teaching degree (4.0 in college after struggling through school my entire life) and now I teach 3rd grade. Because of my own struggles I try to understand the different needs of each of my students. You were extremely blessed to have a mom who understood that you learned differently and took the time to help you. Not many parents do that. I have noticed that most people who struggled with ADD or ADHD and found success had help from a mom who recognized their different learning needs. (I also have soooo many 1/2 finished projects!🤪)

How interesting it is to listen & learn how you have identified your learning style. How being encouraged has played such a valuable part in your success so far. It really highlights for me, how inadequate the current educational systems are, whether you are schooled in America, England (where I live know) or South Africa (where is was born & lived for 2x years!) in order to “pass” academically, which I know realise I am not! I think one of the positive things that will come out of this pandemic, is that parents & self - educators like yourself will become invaluable to the reforming of future educational systems. Anne, you have an awesome Mom and it shows in the type of person you are. I have 3 daughters and they are all awesome women and mothers themselves because their Mom is an awesome mother who provided similar love and motivation to what you received from your mother. I wish now that I had had more patience with them when they were younger but somehow they still love and respect me for the things I can do. I am currently trying to instil a love of woodworking in one of my grandsons who is now 9. We have built a couple of small projects together and everytime we spend time in the shop he’s amazed at how much time has passed.

2:20 Ok, you've pritty much just described me!! I've always found that I can get started on a hobby, get going well and sometimes get good at it and then give everyone around me whiplash when I get board and switch to something else in less then a day! That's changed a bit now as I've discovered woodwork and blacksmithing and although my health doesn't let me do that much my interest is still held by the possibilities that these hobbies bring. Both hobbies just have one tital until you realise that some people can spend decades making and perfecting a type of object (e.g. chairs) but there are so many other things for me to try that use the same basic tool set but can be so different it's mind boggling (e.g. timber framing a barn). I've found 2 hobbies that there is virtually no end to what I can actually make and it's amazing!! Over 2 years later I'm still in love with the hobbies and I am amazed 😊 Thank you for all the inspiration you've put out there over that time 👍👍👍👍👍

Anne, one of the most important things I learned over the last 70+ years was the need and importance of taking the time to be still - no internet, phone, t.v., books, talking, eating, ... just set aside time to be still. It is the rest the soul needs to allow the person to live authentically, renew energy and appreciate life itself uninterrupted. I taught my children the need to take the time to allow themselves to be still ... burnout is real and avoidable.

i think what you've discovered is not so much only the joys of your success but the joys of your failures. we live in a world where our failures are seen as detrimental to our being and our goals.... this cannot be more false. if you do not fail you WILL NOT learn. failure is a pre-requisite for growth. what we nee to do is break down our social barriers and take note that its our short comings, in contrast to each other which even brings people together. if we want to build a world in which people push themselves to grow physically, mentally and spiritually; we need to change the way we think and begin seeking out struggles that make us uncomfortable. the world was not mean to treat us like soft little babies.... and if you think its meant to be a soft life you're in for disappointment... . but you're right its love in the end. inspirational

It took me a while to figure out that I am going to fail at some things. Once I understood that, I started learning from the failures and learned a lot more very quickly. Ya, everyone should have a pile of unfinished projects. They are important, believe it or not. They are part of personal evolution and development. If you don't have a pile, you aren't moving forward. So you are aware, I'm a much older guy, that's been building all sorts of stuff for a very long time. The reason I like you and your channel is because you are trying all sorts of things. That's pretty groovy.

You are one of the greatest teachers that we have. You teach from the heart and through experience. Better than just from a book. You are more like Greg than you think, you have the same qualities that he has. We as a community and as individuals have received so much from you that you do not even know, or ever will. Many times inspiration is received, but the person who gives it doesn't get the acknowledgement for it. So just know that even if it is not said enough you do inspire so many people. You have shown so many people that just because you are different in some way does not make you a failure or someone that can not do something, but it does make you someone that has the drive to do it. I can relate to you in so many different ways from being dyslexic to risking everything in 2020 and loosing my small business and shop. in 2021 i have decided to change my career and go into woodworking. watching your videos gives me confidence that I'm getting into the right profession and doing what is right for my sole. thank you for being so honest and clear on your experience in how your life and dream has come to be! even though life in 2020 has givin you lemons. i hope one day i can come in person and take classes in your school! and Im excited to check out your online corses! keep up that resilience! if you build it i will come!!

I understand as I’m also dyslexic. I spent most of my learning year struggling to learn. Of course numbers were the hardest. I fought past my problem to become a Dentist.. I figured out I was dyslexic when taking a course of medical diagnosis and they talked about what to look for. I checked all the boxes and for the first time in my life I knew what my problem was. From that point on I have become very aware of when it could happen and when it happens. Now I have my little tricks I use to help from making mistakes. Other than your great personality and cool videos it be why I love watching your projects. God bless and keep it going. P.S. after 32 years in Dentistry I have just retired and selling my house here is southwest Florida and I’m heading to north Georgia to make knives and bamboo fly rods. Keep the faith and videos.

A good friend is a good teach - this blew my mind! It's so true, so many times it's less intimidating for me to learn from my friends because I don't feel like they will judge me. ALSO I just love listening to them nerd out about whatever they love!!

Right on! I am one who can't learn best being around the teacher. I had to understand, me, I am slow; sometimes unable to concentrate, yet most at peace being solitary. I had to understand, how to teach myself to begin - how to learn how to learn. I'm 60 years and very curious. The internet has a world of knowledge. The modern-day equivalent of the ancient library of Alexandria. The internet lets me absorb knowledge at my pace. Before the internet it was so hard for me to learn new things. It was AWFUL.
