Anoma however the guests should also respect the hosts and their country side culture. Maybe Tea is all that they can offer with self respect. Entertaining is two sided - the guest should also respect the host, not only the host respect the guest. It is not about village life and city life. If you visit 5 families in 2-3 hours after years and years, you give the hosts no other option than to offer what they have in a short time. I am sorry to hurt you because I think you are normally very sensitive and well meaning, but here it sounds rather like the old saying "Onna Buduni mal - Menna giya mam!" I totally agree about most things you say - especially about tea saucers dripping with water and dirty smelly wiping cloths and I really respect a lot of the stuff you do but here I am a little unhappy about your tone. You know it sounds a teeny weeny bit snobbish :-0 I visit Sri Lanka every 5 years or so, and I visit people and the same thing happens to me. BUT I visit only one family in the morning and one family in the evening. Sometimes together with these families I will visit another family close by. But ALWAYS I eat and drink HAPPILY what ever they offer - even many many sweet cups of tea. And fatty oil cakes, even though I eat very healthy in Europe and eat very little fat and no sugar. For one thing all the western foods we eat at home - pizza, pasta, cheese, ice creams, chocolate and cakes are also extremely unhealthy. Worst is red meat, bacon sausages. If you only saw the way and with what sausages are made in big factories!!! Secondly we know beforehand that we are going to visit and that they are going to give what they have - so I get ready for it. I eat nothing or very little before I go there - so I am hungry and can enjoy their food & drink I am offered. If I feel over-full in the afternoon I go for a walk or play some games and don't eat dinner. My father NEVER allowed us to say "we don't drink tea and soft drinks" or whatever. "what you are offered are only things what human beings eat, so you have to eat at least a little of it. You don't have to eat at your home, but as a guest you must at least try" was his rule. After all it is only for a few days - it is a holiday (even for you all) so just enjoy a different way of life that we have left behind, and make the people you visit happy and proud that you liked and enjoyed what they offered. It is about their self- respect. It is not right to visit people and then make them feel inadequate - that what they have to offer is not good enough for us!! The whole world doesn't have to do like we do. Look at some of the western tourists who eat fruits from our street stalls during the day time and then go to fancy restaurants in the evening. Enjoy both life styles. The most 'educated and developed' people are those who are culturally sensitive - especially towards people who don't have the advantages we have. We have to make them feel good about their standard of living, and not only expect them to offer what we want to eat and drink. When we visit people and say "I don't eat that, and not that also, and not the other also", how will they feel? I think that is insulting to your hosts. And that is really very bad manners. We have to learn to be good guests too. I am sorry to hurt you, but I think it is good for your audience to hear what I say too, and not feel infra-dig or inferior about village entertainment. ... Hope you understand.
