This all-natural, non-chemical insect spray has worked for me. And according to the comments, hundreds of others. It's easy to make and won't harm your plants. Just what I needed as an organic gardener.
Want to see how this natural insecticide worked for others? Click this link for the FAQ to have most of your questions answered and to here how it's working in other gardens: anoregoncottage...
When my basil plants, trumpet vine, and green beans were being eaten alive by unseen bugs, she had to find an effective way to get rid of the pests.
I couldn't use chemicals because some of these plants were herbs she used in cooking. But the organic remedies I tried simply didn't work.
Combining several natural pest remedies I'd read about, I created a Garlic-Mint Garden Insect Spray. It has just four ingredients: garlic, mint leaves, cayenne pepper, and a small amount of biodegradable dishwashing liquid.
Go to my blog for the actual recipe and cooking instructions:
www.anoregoncot...
I sprayed it all over the plants and the first thing she noticed was it smelled good. Within two weeks the plants had noticeably improved. After a month they were back to full health.
The bugs, whatever they were, had been driven away by the spray. (I never found any dead bodies.)
Watch the video and then make a batch of spray for your garden. Get more great organic gardening ideas at www.AnOregonCottage.com.

Jamie - I made your recipe back in 2020. I doubled your recipe back then and stored it in a plastic jug as a spray bottle refill. I JUST ran out this morning, 05/23. So it stores well and didn't get rancid. I use it on everything. Snails, spider mites, aphids, red lily beetles that are coming in on any big box store - hosta, pansy, petunia, oriental lily plants, etc. I'm even hitting shade-loving ferns that attract tons of mosquitoes to deter them from the yard. I know you cut mint from your yard but it's $4 for a handful at local markets, so this new batch is going to have peppermint essential oil instead and maybe a drop or two of rosemary oil instead as the oil is what they are deterred from that sticks to the leaves and stems and drops onto the soil. That will also deter the bunny rabbits from my hostas without being harmful. I also want to say that food grade diatomaceous earth is also great for the fungal issues and is also safe for pets in the yard. A little Morganite fertilizer for the grass (pet safe too) and your backyards are poison-free and happy. Their's nothing worse than watching a neighbor carelessly spray Roundup and Weed and Feed on a windy day knowing that animals walk in bare feet every day year after year on poisons drifting every which way. Thank you again for sharing an easy, long-storing pet-safe spray that isn't hard on the wallet. 🙏🌞

You could also use garlic powder just like cayenne powder and use essential oil of peppermint or Rosemary and then the soap. It is a little easier to make and u can use ur mint for cooking or other recipes., a table spoon of pure cold pressed neem oil wouldn't hurt either. Add when you add the soap.

Hi, TFS these tips. Just wanted to share an fyi regarding the garlic. It's best to add it to the hot water after you take it off the heat and let it cool slightly. Otherwise you're killing the beneficial properties in the garlic. Hope that helps, have a great day everyone.

So yes for years my wife had a peach tree growing up at her mom's place but it never produced fruit. The fruit would always grow to marble size and then fall off. I cut that tree down I winter and when spring started I sprayed the tree with thay mixture when the first leaves appeared after the flowers. After the flowers have been pollinated. I pulled off some of the peachers just to lighten the load on the tree and sprayed it again. Now there ate Peaches growing. So this mixture is fantastic. Apparently, putting a bit of fruit juice in helps to attract sugar craving bugs like aphids and ensure that they eat it. Seeing that garlic and mint are not attacked much by pests, even though they have never been boiled, I suggest not boiling it, therefore killing bacteria and enzymes, but just grind it and steep it.

I was spraying my garden with insecticide - have to - too many earwigs, and I noticed a side effect. I checked what the ingredient was in the spray - Permethrin. I use mostly raised gardens, so I spray around the edges of the boxes. Snails do not like it and slugs curl up if they touch it. I know it's a chemical but my garden was being destroyed every year. The side effect was on snail and slug deterrence and that made me happy because they are the biggest eaters. Having seen this video, I'll try it and hope for the best. I'd rather steer away from chemicals if I can.

I have problem with turmeric plant before, it is not growing well, the leaves just wilt so bad. After just put extremely big onion beside it, suddenly the turmeric plant grows extremely big. I think tomorrow will try with garlic as a companion to jasmine plant that has serious caterpillar problems.

Thank you for the helpful video. I managed to make it today. My plants are being eaten by many grasshoppers attack at the moment. Hope it can repel them too. Have you experience grasshoppers issues? They just killed one of my cotton plants by eating up all the leaves. I sprayed on all the leaves to try. Hope I didn’t overdose spraying. Oh dear I didn’t read your past replies from others enquiries under the comment in time. 😰

This is a wonderful treatment for our garden in Spain and it works great. I've been replenishing making new batches after it rains. Is this necessary?

I'm so glad it's working for you, too! More applications are only needed if the bugs are still eating your plants so much that they can't thrive. I don't reapply if the plants get big enough to not be affected by a few bugs. I find it's mainly needed when plants are small or in a bad infestation.

AnOregonCottage - Thank you. Found it now. Must have been some technical glitch before, cuz last time I looked the recipe ended right after the list of equipment. I got it. You would like to engage people in your blog. I just don’t have much time to read through all the story again after watching this video. It would be more to my liking if it was easier to find.

Jem Lapitan - I actually didn’t boil it. Someone left an advice here in the comments that garlic shouldn’t be boiled or it will lose this special natural compounds that bugs don’t like. For that reason I just mixed everything with water and steeped over night. Works as well if not better. Somehow those yellow cucumber beatles are quite resilient. They don’t like the spray but once it dries out they tend to come back. Although tending to hang around the new growth mostly. I’ve been spraying morning and night for three days now.

I don't know wether it was mentioned here before but my question is: Does the garlic-mint-cayenne spray affect the taste of the basil (or other herbs)?
@AnOregonCottage
@AnOregonCottage 4 жыл бұрын
If you ate it right away, maybe. But I only had to apply it when it was small and by the time it grew to a size I could harvest from, there was no smell or taste.

Best, all natural and biodegradable soap is one you make yourself. 50 - 100 English Ivy leaves, chopped or blended up, no need to go crazy, bring to boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow to steep overnight, strain and bottle. Works great and you know what's in it.

@@AnOregonCottage Yep. Pretty good stuff too and not too heavy on plants like some dish soaps can be. Horse Chestnuts will also make a good soap. Both are pretty good, all natural laundry soaps.

No, it's a tiny amount in the amount of water. Also, I spray when the leaves are being eaten and aren't good for picking and by the time new ones grow to pick they don't have the residue, if that makes sense?

All my mint is being eaten up! It's covered in holes. Do you know of a natural repellent I can use? Every time I try to look it up, I just find ways to use mint as a repellent, but nothing to repel pests from mint.
@AnOregonCottage
@AnOregonCottage 6 жыл бұрын
Goodness! Can you see what is eating it? Flea beetles, cabbage loopers and spider mites all will attack mint at times. I would try dousing with water if it's spider mites and using diatomaceous earth for loopers and beetles.
