For my college essay, I wanted to talk about how even though I was a child of immigrant parents, my classmates were extremely welcoming, and it was actually my own parents and grandma who tried to hide our culture. I wanted to focus on the internalized racism and how both my family and I are gradually learning to be proud, but I’m worried that the whole "we were ashamed of our culture" is kinda cliché. Any advice?

hey! i think that's a great idea but i do think you should have in mind a sort of "resolution" to end the essay on a positive note. when i see essays like this, a lot of people talk about their negative experiences, they follow up by talking about how they're getting better but they never actually specify how they're improving. if you actually conceptualize this positive change, i think the essay can be really compelling!

I have a question that's kinda irrelevant, but I'm finding a hard time getting a clear answer. As an international student, if I apply to Need-blind schools in the US for international students (Yes ik there are only 5 but this is a hypothetical), does it lower my chances of getting in? Yea that's about it, I'm in the final stages of my applications and i just really wanted to make sure that ticking that financial aid box on any of the 5need blind schools wouldn't hurt my chances.
