*What are the cognitive functions?*
If you dive a little deeper into the “16 personalities” theory, you will find the 8 cognitive functions, which stem back to the original psycho-analytical studies of Carl Jung that brought us MBTI. The 4 letters of each type are actually a means of decoding their unique cognitive function stack.
Each type leads with a specific function in their 1st slot, the opposite of which is their 4th, or “inferior” function.
Understanding our functions allows us to decipher what the natural tendencies and preferences of our brains are, and to understand that they are fundamentally different from others’. MBTI teaches us that being well aware of our 4th function, and all of our functions, enables us to know where our blind spots are, as well as what we need to develop in order to actualise our potential and become a more well-rounded version of ourselves.
I have not made a video about all of the cognitive functions yet, but thankfully, many other awesome KZbinrs have! If you are interested in learning more, below are introductory videos from Frank James, LiJo and Aimee Y respectively:

INFJ here. My eldest son is ENFP. I love you guys! Your curiosity and excitement for life is so refreshing. And before I learned about the personality types and cognitive functions I could never understand why this son and I got along so well and my other son and I did not. It's pretty simple it's because my other son is a different mix in the analyst category. And this son is literally my shadow, everything I'm not but in the same order. 😅 ... Your type really helps me look at the other side of things that I'm missing sometimes in a way that never makes me feel as if I'm being taught or shown something. And it's so admirable for me how well you can handle chaos. 😂

I'm from LA, where the weather is always great, except for maybe a couple handful of days, so I realized just how SPOILED I am when I visited London UK in 1999. What surprised me was the food. I was expecting the "worst" food, but I actually had some delish meals. One was at a hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurant that happened to still be open when my sister and I arrived outside of Victoria Station at 10pm. We were exhausted and famished, and I know it wasn't because I was hungry that the food tasted amazing. The curry and naan were all served on some slightly battered tin plates that were delivered by dumbwaiter (so cool!!!) to the human waiter. Two decades later, I still consider that one of the best meals I've ever had in my life, and definitely THE best Indian meal I've had. The other yummy meal I had was the following day, at the hotel we were staying at. It was a traditional British breakfast w/ beans & toast, along w/ that round bacon. I loved it so much that I made it for myself when I got back to LA. I can't see myself visiting London for "fun." The weather truly sucks, w/ it raining intermittently THROUGHOUT THE DAY, and not light enough not to necessitate an umbrella, though many don't carry one. There was a postcard in one of the souvenir shops that summed up the weather perfectly. It was set up like a split screen, with the left side being London in winter, and the right side London in summer. The person in winter was bundled up, and the person in summer was wearing shorts and a tee, but both looked miserable in RAINY WEATHER. :D

As an INFJ with Ni being my first function, I find Ne users really interesting to talk to. I like to think of the two like a funnel. Ni flows down the funnel and Ne flows up. I know an INFP and years ago we wrote a novel together. His Ne function would come up with the wildest, most outlandish but interesting plot lines, things I never would've thought of! Then I would edit and refine his ideas to fit with the rest of the story. I've tried writing on my own since, but I can't ever come up with any plot line that inspires me like the ones Ne comes up with!

I'm an Ni dom (INFJ) and I really love a metaphore I read once about the differences between Ni and Ne Imagine a big and safe ocean, it has deep waters with some shipwrecks and coral reefs, but also a lot of beautiful islands with plants and cool different animals in each one of them. There are two explorers exploring this ocean, the Ni, and the Ne. The Ne is the one that prefers to explore the surface, see the color of the waters changing, and spend some time in each island (as long as he keeps finding interesting stuff, he's there). He moves quite quickly from one place to another, wich causes him to know a bunch of different things about every island The Ni is the one that prefers to find an interesting spot and learn every single thing about it, so he dives deep in the ocean, and explore every section of the shipwrecks, every color of every coral, he notices a bunch of patterns that could be useful someday (or not, lol). He takes long to move onto another spot, but he knows a lot about the one that he left. Sorry if something looks gramatically awful, much love from Brazil!!

Then, once I've exhausted my resources, either my Te kicks in and I feel compelled to do something with this new knowledge or I find a new/different subject to deep dive in to.

Ne doms like to collect endless different ideas, whereas Ni doms like to funnel deeper and deeper into particular subjects of interest.

This was fun! As an ENFP, a lot of what Jenna said was quite relatable. I also find myself to be very spontaneous and adaptable, but while I also enjoy interacting with others (and I love talking!), I find I need 'me time' to recharge. Being around too many people for too long is EXHAUSTING for me. I will say that I cut off people much less in conversation. :D I also found your description of being an NE to be very accurate - everything really is interesting! I loved your description of looking into a topic and then getting side tracked as you discover other things that are also interesting. I've decided ENFP are the 'rabbit hole' personality, because we almost never end up where we planned at the start. Anyway, this was a really great video. Thanks for putting it out.

I feel the “rabbit hole” personality thing, like last night I started revising physics and then like 3 hours later I was reading legislature for random law and researching rules of negligence lol. However I think I am more organised than the average enfp cause of my Type 1w2 enneagram, and the fact I realised really early on I’m not good at organising So then became hyper organised instead. I’m still an ENFp I just enjoy planning. However I’ll probs not go through with the plan. But also the recharging thing I’m an ambivert so I need to recharge after a while. But overall I love socialising with people and get energy from being around them. And am a super creative thinker, but hopeless at organising the ideas. Like for my creative writing exam tomorrow I have had like 3 weeks to plan including in lesson time and I’ve had so many ideas and I haven’t decided on just one yet.

As an INFJ I do love long car rides also. I like sitting behind the wheel but I love riding as a passenger. I can focus on the music when I want, I can watch the landscapes or just be in my head. I think growing up with my ESFP father made my Se suprisingly strong. I feel bad when there is a really nice weather and I am not able to go biking/running/exploring the neighbouring villages. Ni, as I noticed recently, works very hard to stereotype evertyhing. For instance when I read some historical aricle, I notice how things are appearing one after another and how this proces ends, and then I connect it (not purposely, I just can't stop this chain of thoughts) with similar situation from the present and my brain is like: OH YES I SEE, SO THIS IS HOW IT IS GOING TO END, TIMES NEVER CHANGE, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY AND IT WILL ALWAYS BE, EVERYTHING IS THE SAME, GOING TO ONE SINGULAR DESTINATION. Then Ti: but you know, every single situation is caused by many different circumstances, so how are they going to... Ni: SHUT UP, THE RIVER CROSSES MANY OBSTACLES AND MANY COUNTRIES BUT ALL THE WATER ENDS IN ONE PLACE By the way I just realised that the riverbed is a very good methaphore for Ni. We are aware that a river has many little sources. We like to explore (which can be mistaken with Ne) all of them but we see them only as these little mechanisms that work in order to make this one huge, long, strong and important river.

The Ne-dom explanation was really interesting. As a Ni-dom(INTJ) myself I always had problems fully understanding Ne but the way Jenna explained it, was pretty good, that Ne tries to find new possibilities and different point of views to reach even more of them but Ni does the same to find the solution and then as soon as possible it just thinks about narrowing them down to find a conclusion. Overall this was pretty interesting and fun and we appreciate your efforts! Also I have an ESFP sister and we have like 0 things in common so I kinda envy you guys a little bit haha

Yeah basically Ni looks at a bunch of different theories and ideas. Then it boils all of them down into one conclusion/decision. Ne looks at one idea/theory and uses that idea to generate several new theories/ideas. Ne is basically a brain storming function while Ni is used to come to conclusions about the world.

It's a helpful reminder for me that even though because of their similarities, ENFPs *can* "do" things (Se) and ESFPs *can* talk about things endlessly (Ne), it's not the main thing they need! Regarding Ne vs Ni, something that came to mind was that Ni users want ideas/thoughts to be condensed and simplified into a conclusion eventually, while Ne feels virtually NO need for things to be simplified - ever 😂 (Also lol, LOVE rollercoasters!! But it does feel more like an Fi thing for me than Se: ie, mainly the *feeling* of being free and excited compared to what my physical experience is in & of itself.)

As an intp, I would say my Ne is what helps me explore all the possibilities to find the best solution (probably because Ti is my first function), but that's only when there is a problem to be solved. Otherwise Ne is to explore for its own sake. I think Ni is a lot more subconscious. It kind of works like Si for people who don't have Si in their top four. Si catalogues memories, facts, etc, and it can all be recalled consciously by the user and explained to someone else. Ni also catalogues information taken in, probably mostly through Se, but is stored in a subconscious manner and then they *just know* the solution to a problem, but can't seem to explain why. That's my understanding.

I relate a lot with both of you. For example, the story about the car ride at night in the middle of nowhere with music blasting and the windows down... I remember in college I used to take rides like that ALL the time to let out some stress. Just be in the moment and let my thoughts fly away. Then, there's the rabbit hole scenario and definitely the "novelty" of everything that attracts me to EVERYTHING. I am the personification of the saying "Jack of all trades, master of none". There was something else I wanted to say, but I forgot... After watching part 1, I felt a constant struggle with being able to identify with both and just, not knowing who I was, but as the video progressed, I felt more and more identified with the ENFP characteristics. I think, though, I started life as a young girl with a clear and strict ESFP character. I absolutely loved people and just talking to them and experiencing life, going from one thing right into the other without blinking. But, whether by nature or nurture, I developed into a ENFP. I love connecting the dots, seeing the big picture, and my own company. I like diving into projects and creating, building, and putting together things based on previous knowledge and experiences. Life is like a giant jigsaw puzzle and everything is a piece. I am, though, very empathetic and I think that's what keeps me grounded. This was such a great video! 👌👌

As an ENTP, I think both of you are quite fun people to have around... around at least 1km away from me. Just kidding, you both look like pretty fun people to have around. Btw, about the differences of Ne and Se, and when the topic of boredom was brought up, that is why I immediately skeptical of supposed ENTPs when they talk about how easily bored they are, and they can't sit still through a video or different things. Because, just like Jenna, I am never really bored, I have a world inside my head and I constantly entertain myself with different possibilities, questions and philosophy. I love being with people and is one of my favorite things to do, but learning new things and just thinking is just as fun and stimulating.... But then, you make me go outside and or try new experiences that seem crazy to me, and doing stuff in the real world sometimes feels like torture torture and unnatural. I try new things all the time, but they are never physically crazy, they all are things like ideas, topics, cooking, art, music, etc. Also, perfect date, is just talking about philosophy, science, fiction, history and art with someone till 4am.

Dear lord, ENFP and I relate to this on a spiritual level. I’ve never gotten bored unless I can’t let my mind do its own thing. I can sit still with nothing to interact with and I’ll be perfectly fine, staring at the floor and laughing for no apparent reason. But NEVER give me a ton of things to do and demand me to just focus on those things. This is a total contrast to my SP relatives who sit for two seconds and already feel awkward because they’re not physically doing something.

To the comment from Jenna about ENFPs intensely social bursts followed by introverted time outs.... That's exactly what had me wondering if i was extroverted or introverted. It's the most common trait we have that distinguishes us as ENFP... i think

Yes, I've heard a few ENFPs express this!

(ENFP) 6:00 going "traveling" in my brain, is enough too lol. But I traveling irl is still fun too (not as fun as in the brain lol). 7:46 SUPER RELATE Go out a week (a day sometimes lol), then disappear for like a week or more lol. My recharging is way longer than the activities themselves 16:28 Rabbit holes is my middle name 19:00 hilarious my favorite part...why do we have to OVER EXPLAIN EVERYTHING?? I try not to do it but it's soooo hard . Aww poor Kristin lol I HATE the drops of Rollercoasters!!!

Hahahaha YES the over-explaining is real!!! I think I do it because I don't trust my ability to speak accurately on the fly and I'm refining my idea as I'm talking 😂 Sometimes it's hard to know where to stop!

@@justjennaish that's EXACTLY why I do it, so it MUST TRULY be an ENFP thing!

The warning at the front...I thought I'd be ready cause I am a close friend of an ENFP and have an ESFP sister and an ESTP cousin. I was not ready. I'm an ENTJ, and I can take quite a bit of this stuff as an Extrovert...but geez this was crazy 😂

Love the energy you two have together! Jenna, you're so wise and I appreciate your honesty. I'm an ENFP too, and I relate to pretty much everything you said about yourself. We're sometimes are portrayed as aloof or irresponsible, but that's not always true. You said you need to 'disappear' for ages after heavy socialising, I also do this but I've found one-on-one can be less taxing than a group. I do find my Ne function tricky, especially when it comes to my work/career personally. I know ENFP's who often get stuck or feel trapped in monotony - the worst feeling in the world for us!

Thanks so much for commenting and for your kind words! Yes, career can be tricky. As well as the potential mundanity of a job one may not enjoy, I also struggle in roles that don't allow me to be creative, or roles that involve navigating inefficient red tape or beaurocratical processes. Thankfully I've not had too many of those in my life. And I've found creative freelance work the most satisfying, for sure 😊 Hope you're having a wonderful day!

I found your channel today and insta subscribed! 🤗❤️ I’m ENFP 9w1 7w6 2w3 and I relate to Jenna a lot, the only difference is that I’m genuinely not afraid of any situation (probably because I’ve been through so many different things and know that, eventually, everything will be ok, be it in a week or in a year, and me being afraid will likely hinder my ability to think clearly), and I’m socially introverted/ambiverted, I get more energy when I’m alone (that withdrawn 9w1 core) but I’m fine with large gatherings of people, I don’t get overwhelmed. You’re both lovely and I’m glad I found you 🤗 I like first-hand information, especially now that mbti gets more popular every day and people often just read some description on 16personalities without studying the functions. About those rollercoasters: as a gut type 9, I LOVE sensory things, I will absolutely go on a rollercoaster, several times in a row lol

As an ENFP, this sounds about right. I hate roller coasters too. I love exploring different topics and falling into a searching rabbit hole. I love conceptual, philosophical, theoretical topics that spark my Ne’s brainstorming. I could sit with my thoughts comfortably for hoursss. It’s so fun.

ENFP: I love travelling because of the variety of people you meet along the way that tell you about their culture and world views and the great discussions that come out of that! Also, I'm bored all the time haha. Especially now during the pandemic, sitting at home all day kills me. It's hard for me to get my Ne excited when staying at the same place for too long. But yes, as soon as I actually would have work to do I start going down the Wikipedia rabbit holes lmao.

INFP here and I definitely have been down Wikipedia rabbit holes. One that comes to mind is looking up most of the Anglo-Saxon/English/British Monarchs. Ni is also interested in details and notices things in people, theories, etc. that others wouldn't. My INFJ friend has a very unique pattern of thinking, I would say. Downright mystifying at times.
