Travelling Thailand in 2022 can sometimes just feel like a king holiday. Everything is so easy, so normal now. I went in search for a unique village and it took me on a journey of hundreds of kilometers to the very north of Thailand.
I’m in Mae Salong which is a tea village in the province of Chiang Rai. It used to be an opium town, producing kilos of opium each year but the king has helped train the locals to grow tea instead. Not as fun I suppose but tastes good.
This village is Chinese and they come from the 93rd division. They fought against the communists in China before losing to them. After losing, they packed their bags and marched into the Burmese jungle to live nomadically whilst fighting the communists.
Thailand eventually granted them a safe place to live in return of fighting for the Thai government. This is the most interesting and visually inspiring village I’ve ever visited in Thailand.
I can’t recommend enough.
Peace and love.
